Phagocytosis is one of the methods used to acquire symbiotic bacteria to establish intracellular symbiosis. A deep-sea mussel, <i>Bathymodiolus japonicus</i>, acquires its symbiont from the environment by phagocytosis of gill epithelial cells and receives nutrients from them.
