Project description:Self-standing photocatalytic membranes constructed from TiO2 nanofibers hold great promise in environmental remediation; however, challenges still remained for the poor mechanical properties of polycrystalline TiO2 nanofibers. Herein, soft Zr-doped TiO2 (TZ) nanofibrous membranes with robust mechanical properties and enhanced photocatalytic activity were fabricated via electrospinning technique. The Zr4+ incorporation could effectively inhibit the grain growth and reduce the surface defects and breaking point of TiO2 nanofiber. The as-prepared TZ membranes were composed of well-interconnected nanofibers with a high aspect ratios, small grain size and pore size, which exhibited good tensile strength (1.32 MPa) and showed no obvious damage after 200 cycles of bending to a radius of 2 mm. A plausible bending deformation mechanism of the soft TZ membranes was proposed from microscopic single nanofiber to macroscopical membranes. Moreover, the resultant TZ membranes displayed better photocatalytic performance for methylene blue degradation compared to a commercial catalyst (P25), including high degradation degree of 95.4% within 30 min, good reusability in 5 cycles, and easiness of recycling. The successful preparation of such fascinating materials may open up new avenues for the design and development of soft TiO2-based membranes for various application.

Project description:Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) composite nanofibrous membranes immobilized with nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by electrospinning and ultrasonic-assisted electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that TiO2 and GO were more evenly dispersed on the surface and inside of the nanofibers after 45 min of ultrasonic treatment. Adding TiO2 and GO reduced the fiber diameter; the minimum fiber diameter was 84.66 ± 40.58 nm when the mass ratio of TiO2-to-GO was 8:2 (PAN/β-CD nanofibrous membranes was 191.10 ± 45.66 nm). Using the anionic dye methyl orange (MO) and the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as pollutant models, the photocatalytic activity of the nanofibrous membrane under natural sunlight was evaluated. It was found that PAN/β-CD/TiO2/GO composite nanofibrous membrane with an 8:2 mass ratio of TiO2-to-GO exhibited the best degradation efficiency for the dyes. The degradation efficiency for MB and MO were 93.52 ± 1.83% and 90.92 ± 1.52%, respectively. Meanwhile, the PAN/β-CD/TiO2/GO composite nanofibrous membrane also displayed good antibacterial properties and the degradation efficiency for MB and MO remained above 80% after 3 cycles. In general, the PAN/β-CD/TiO2/GO nanofibrous membrane is eco-friendly, reusable, and has great potential for the removal of dyes from industrial wastewaters.

Project description:The combination of plasmonic nanoparticles with semiconductor photocatalysts is a good strategy for synthesizing highly efficient photocatalysts. Such binary nanoparticles have demonstrated enhanced catalytic activity in comparison to either plasmonic catalysts or semiconductor catalysts. However, problematic recovery and limited long-term colloidal stability of those nanoparticles in suspension limit their wide use in catalysis. To palliate to such limitations, we embedded binary nanoparticles in polymer fibers to design photocatalytic membranes. First, we used the selective over-growth of crystalline cerium oxide on the gold nanoparticle template with distinct shapes. Gold nanospheres, gold nanorods, and gold nanotriangles were used as the template for the growth of the cerium oxide domains. Then, the resulting nanoparticles were used to catalyze model reactions in suspensions. The gold nanoparticles covered with patches of cerium oxide outperformed the fully covered and naked nanoparticles in terms of catalytic efficiency. Finally, the most efficient binary nanostructures were successfully embedded in nanofibrous membranes by colloidal electrospinning and used in water remediation experiments in a flow-through reactor.

Project description:In the present work, TiO2 rutile nanorods and anatase nanoflakes have been grown on carbon fiber paper (CFP) by the hydrothermal method. Their photoelectrochemical properties and photocatalytic performances have been investigated. The introduction of CFP is found to improve visible light absorption intensity and effective surface areas apparently, and also make TiO2 photocatalysts easier to recycle from aqueous waste. An ultrasonic field was employed during the process of photocatalysis. Sono-photocatalytic efficiency is found to be enhanced significantly in comparison with those of photocatalysis and sonocatalysis, which indicates a positive ultrasonic synergy effect. The scavenger experiments reveal that superoxide radicals (˙O2 -) and hydroxyl (˙OH) are the predominant active species during the dye degradation sono-photocatalytic process assisted by CFP-supported TiO2 catalysts. To investigate the ultrasonic synergy photocatalytic effect, the generated amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected and quantitatively evaluated under visible light, ultrasound, and the combined condition of visible light and ultrasound. As a result, the present work provides an efficient way to improve photocatalytic performance and to realize easy recovery of photocatalyst, which will be helpful for better design of advanced photocatalysts for practical applications.

Project description:In this study photocatalyst, TiO2@HNTs were prepared by synthesizing TiO2 nanoparticles in situ on the functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) surface. Photocatalytic PVC membrane TiO2@HNTs M2 (2 wt.%) and TiO2@HNTs M3 (3 wt.%) were also prepared. Photocatalyst TiO2@HNTs and photocatalytic PVC membranes were used to study the photocatalytic activity against the methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RB) dyes in UV batch reactor. The structure and morphology of photocatalyst and photocatalytic PVC membrane were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL). The PL study showed that the oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups present on the surface of TiO2@HNTs act as excellent traps for charge carrier, reducing the electron-hole recombination rate.TiO2@HNTs 2 (2 wt.%) and TiO2@HNTs 3 (3 wt.%) degraded MB dye up to 83.21%, 87.47% and RB dye up to 96.84% and 96.87%, respectively. TiO2@HNT photocatalyst proved to be stable during the three consecutive cycle of photocatalytic degradation of the RB dye. TiO2@HNTs M2 and TiO2@HNTs M3 degraded MB dye up to 27.19%, 42.37% and RB dye up to 30.78%, 32.76%, respectively. Photocatalytic degradation of both the dyes followed the first-order kinetic model. Degradation product analysis was done using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and the results showed that the dye degradation was initiated by demethylation of the molecule. MB and RB dye degradation reaction were tested by TBA and IPA as OH* and H+ scavengers respectively. Mechanism of photocatalytic activity of TiO2@HNTs and photocatalytic PVC membrane were also explained.

Project description:The artificial photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants has emerged as a promising approach to purifying the water environment. The core issue of this ongoing research is to construct efficient but easily recyclable photocatalysts without quadratic harm. Here, we report an eco-friendly photocatalyst with in situ generated TiO2 quantum dots (TQDs) on natural cotton cellulose (CC) by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The porous fine structure and abundant hydroxyl groups control the shape growth and improve the stability of nanoparticles, making natural CC suitable for TQDs. The TQDs/CC photocatalyst was synthesized without the chemical modification of the TQDs. FE-SEM and TEM results showed that 5-6 nm TQDs are uniformly decorated on the CC surface. The long-term stability in photocatalytic activity and structure of more than ten cycles directly demonstrates the stability of CC on TQDs. With larger CC sizes, TQDs are easier to recycle. The TQDs/CC photocatalysts show impressive potential in the photocatalytic degradation of anionic methyl orange (MO) dyes and cationic rhodamine B (RhB) dyes.

Project description:Palladium nanoparticles were grown on sub-millimeter activated Al2O3 particle support by spraying H2PdCl4 solution evenly onto the support, followed with a thermal reduction under H2 atmosphere. Compared with its counterpart created by the conventional impregnation method, the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst created by the spray process could enrich the existence of active Pd nanoparticles on the surface of the catalyst support and increase their degree of dispersion, resulting in a much higher activity in the catalytic reduction of bromate in water. The effect of Al2O3 support particle size on the bromate removal rate was also investigated, which demonstrated that smaller support particle size could have higher activity in the catalytic reduction of bromate in water because of its larger exposed surface. This Pd/Al2O3 catalyst could be easily used in the fixed bed reactor due to its large support size and demonstrated excellent stability in the catalytic reduction of bromate in mineral water. This Pd/Al2O3 catalyst also exhibited a good catalytic reduction performance on azo dyes as demonstrated by its effective catalytic hydrogenation of methyl orange. Thus, catalysts prepared by the spray method developed in this work could have the potential to be used in fixed bed reactors for various water treatment practices.

Project description:Metal clusters supported on TiO2 are widely used in many photocatalytic applications, including pollution control and production of solar fuels. Besides high photoactivity, stability during the photoreaction is another essential quality of high-performance photocatalysts, however systematic studies on this attribute are absent for metal clusters supported on TiO2. Here we have studied, both experimentally and with first-principles simulation methods, the stability of Pt, Pd and Au clusters prepared by ball milling on nanoshaped anatase nanoparticles preferentially exposing {001} (plates) and {101} (bipyramids) facets during the photogeneration of hydrogen. It is found that Pt/TiO2 exhibits superior stability than Pd/TiO2 and Au/TiO2, and that {001} facet-based photocatalysts always are more stable than their {101} analogous regardless of the considered metal species. The loss of stability associated with cluster sintering, which is facilitated by the transfer of photoexcited carriers from the metal species to the neighbouring Ti and O atoms, most significantly and detrimentally affects the H2-evolution photoactivity.

Project description:Numerous reports have elucidated that TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) exhibit respectable photocatalytic degradation capacities due to their high specific surface areas. However, the current recovery process leads to a loss of TiO2-NPs; therefore, there is a need to immobilize TiO2-NPs on the substrate used. Herein, TiO2-coated yttria-stabilized zirconia/silica nanofiber (TiO2-coated YSZ/silica NF) was prepared by coating TiO2 on the surface of YSZ/silica NF using a sol-gel process. The TiO2 coating layer on the nanofiber surface improved the separation ability of the membrane as well as the photocatalytic degradation ability. The pore size of the TiO2-coated YSZ/silica NF membrane was less than that of the pristine YSZ/silica NF membrane, and it rejected over 99.6% of the 0.5 μm polymeric particles. In addition, the TiO2-coated YSZ/silica NF membrane showed excellent adsorption/degradation of humic acid (HA, 88.2%), methylene blue (MB, 92.4%), and tetracycline (TC, 99.5%). Six recycling tests were performed to evaluate the reusability of the TiO2-coated YSZ/silica NF membrane. The adsorption/degradation efficiency for HA, MB, and TC decreased by 3.7%, 2.8%, and 2.2%, respectively. We thus verified the high separation ability, excellent photocatalytic degradation ability, and excellent reusability of the TiO2-coated YSZ/silica NF membranes.

Project description:Additive Manufacturing (AM) was evaluated as a promising technology for constructing photocatalytic reactors due to its inherent ability to produce complex geometries with high precision and customization. In this work, a 3D structure was designed to achieve a good light distribution inside a cylindrical batch reactor and printed using the stereolithography (SLA) technique. A hybrid material composed of a commercial photoreactive resin (Formlabs Clear V4) and the benchmark photocatalyst TiO2 P25 Evonik (1 wt%) was prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and rheological and mechanical methods. To evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the materials, several experiments on the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) were carried out using the 3D printed structure. Its performance was assessed by monitoring the concentration at specific times. Overall, the results demonstrate a simple, cost-effective, and fast technique to immobilize catalysts used in photocatalytic applications.
