Tandem Suzuki Polymerization/Heck Cyclization Reaction to Form Ladder-Type 9,9'-Bifluorenylidene-Based Conjugated Polymer.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of ladder-type 9,9'-bifluorenylidene-based conjugated polymer is reported. Unlike the typical synthetic strategy, the new designed ladder-type conjugated polymer is achieved via tandem Suzuki polymerization/Heck cyclization reaction in one-pot. In the preparation process, Suzuki polymerization reaction occurred first and then the intramolecular Heck cyclization followed smoothly under the same catalyst Pd(PPh₃)₄. The model reaction proved that the introduction of iodine (I) for this tandem reaction can effectively control the sequential bond-forming process and inhibit the additional competitive side reactions. Thus, small-molecule model compounds could be obtained in high yields. The successes of the synthesized small molecule and polymer compounds indicate that the Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction may be an effective strategy for improving extended π-conjugated materials.

Project description:A new and highly selective method for the synthesis of hydroxyl-substituted tetrahydropyrans is described. This method utilizes titanium(IV) isopropoxide and diethyl tartrate to perform a diastereoselective epoxidation followed by in situ epoxide activation and highly selective endo-cyclization to form the desired tetrahydropyran ring. The HIJ ring fragment of the marine ladder polyether yessotoxin was synthesized using this two-stage tactic that proceeds with high efficiency and excellent regioselectivity.

Ladder-like Polymer Brushes Containing Conjugated Poly(Propylenedioxythiophene) Chains.

Project description:The high stability and conductivity of 3,4-disubstituted polythiophenes such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) make them attractive candidates for commercial applications. However, next-generation nanoelectronic devices require novel macromolecular strategies for the precise synthesis of advanced polymer structures as well as their arrangement. In this report, we present a synthetic route to make ladder-like polymer brushes with poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT)-conjugated chains. The brushes were prepared via a self-templating surface-initiated technique (ST-SIP) that combines the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of bifunctional ProDOT-based monomers and subsequent oxidative polymerization of the pendant ProDOT groups in the parent brushes. The brushes prepared in this way were characterized by grazing-angle FTIR, XPS spectroscopy, and AFM. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements were used to extract the information about the structure and effective conjugation length of PProDOT-based chains. Stability tests performed in ambient conditions and under exposure to standardized solar light revealed the remarkable stability of the obtained materials.

Dearomative 1,4-difunctionalization of naphthalenes via palladium-catalyzed tandem Heck/Suzuki coupling reaction.

Project description:Dearomative functionalization reactions represent an important strategy for the synthesis of valuable three-dimensional molecules from simple planar aromatics. Naphthalene is a challenging arene towards transition-metal-catalyzed dearomative difunctionalization reactions. Reported herein is an application of naphthalene as a masked conjugated diene in a palladium-catalyzed dearomative 1,4-diarylation or 1,4-vinylarylation reaction via tandem Heck/Suzuki sequence. Three types of 1,4-dihydronaphthalene-based spirocyclic compounds are achieved in excellent regio- and diastereoselectivities. Key to this transformation is the inhibition of a few competitive side reactions, including intramolecular naphthalenyl C-H arylation, intermolecular Suzuki cross-coupling, dearomative 1,2-difunctionalization, and dearomative reductive-Heck reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations imply that the facile exergonic dearomative insertion of a naphthalene double bond disrupts the sequence of direct Suzuki coupling, leading to the tandem Heck/Suzuki coupling reaction. The observed regioselectivity towards 1,4-difunctionalization is due to the steric repulsions between the introduced aryl group and the spiro-scaffold in 1,2-difunctionalization.

Chemoselective Three-Component Coupling via A Tandem Pd Catalyzed Boron-Heck and Suzuki Reaction.

Direct Light-Driven Water Oxidation by a Ladder-Type Conjugated Polymer Photoanode.

Project description:A conjugated polymer known for high stability (poly[benzimidazobenzophenanthroline], coded as BBL) is examined as a photoanode for direct solar water oxidation. In aqueous electrolyte with a sacrificial hole acceptor (SO3(2-)), photoelectrodes show a morphology-dependent performance. Films prepared by a dispersion-spray method with a nanostructured surface (feature size of ∼20 nm) gave photocurrents up to 0.23 ± 0.02 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 VRHE under standard simulated solar illumination. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals a constant flat-band potential over a wide pH range at +0.31 VNHE. The solar water oxidation photocurrent with bare BBL electrodes is found to increase with increasing pH, and no evidence of semiconductor oxidation was observed over a 30 min testing time. Characterization of the photo-oxidation reaction suggests H2O2 or •OH production with the bare film, while functionalization of the interface with 1 nm of TiO2 followed by a nickel-cobalt catalyst gave solar photocurrents of 20-30 μA cm(-2), corresponding with O2 evolution. Limitations to photocurrent production are discussed.

Total synthesis of the strychnos alkaloid (+)-minfiensine: tandem enantioselective intramolecular Heck-iminium ion cyclization.

Project description:A 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9a,4a-(iminoethano)-9H-carbazole (4) is a central structural feature of the Strychnos alkaloid minfiensine (1) and akuammiline alkaloids such as vincorine (5) and echitamine (6). A cascade catalytic asymmetric Heck-iminium cyclization was developed that rapidly provides 3,4-dihydro-9a,4a-(iminoethano)-9H-carbazoles in high enantiomeric purity. Two sequences were developed for advancing 3,4-dihydro-9a,4a-(iminoethano)-9H-carbazole 27 to (+)-minfiensine. In our first-generation approach, a reductive Heck cyclization was employed to form the fifth ring of (+)-minfiensine. In a second more concise total synthesis, an intramolecular palladium-catalyzed ketone enolate vinyl iodide coupling was employed to construct the final ring of (+)-minfiensine. This second-generation total synthesis of enantiopure (+)-minfiensine was accomplished in 6.5% overall yield and 15 steps from 1,2-cyclohexanedione and anisidine 13. A distinctive feature of this sequence is the use of palladium-catalyzed reactions to form all carbon-carbon bonds in the transformation of these simple precursors to (+)-minfiensine.

Synthesis, Chemosensory Properties, and Self-Assembly of Terpyridine-Containing Conjugated Polycarbazole through RAFT Polymerization and Heck Coupling Reaction.

Project description:We report the responsive fluorescence chemosensory phenomena of a carbazole-functionalized crosslinked polymer (PCaT) with pendent terpyridine (tpy) groups as receptors of metal ions. The polymer was synthesized using Heck polymerization between 3,6-dibromide groups in a carbazole-based polymer (PC2Br) and divinyl tpy monomer. The effects of the polymeric structure on the optical and chemosensory properties of the PCaT were compared with those of a carbazole-tpy alternating conjugated polymer (PCT). Photoluminescence titrations demonstrated that the PCaT and PCT had the high sensing ability toward Fe3+ ions, with Stern⁻Volmer constants of 8.10 × 10⁴ and 6.68 × 10⁴ M-1, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) toward Fe3+ of the PCaT and PCT was estimated to be 1.31 × 10-6 and 1.81 × 10-6 M, respectively, and the superior LOD of the PCaT was ascribed to its lowly crosslinked structure. The fluorescence of the solutions of these polymers that were quenched by Fe3+ ions recovered when trace CN- anions were added because of the high stability constant of the CN-⁻Fe3+ complex. Micellar aggregates with a mean diameter of approximately 239.5 nm were formed by dissolving the PCaT in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. Our results suggest that the PCaT is a promising material for chemosensory applications.

One-dimensional ladder gallium coordination polymer.

Project description:A one-dimensional ladder-type coordination polymer, poly[[(μ2-hydroxido)(μ2-1H-pyrazole-3,5-di-carboxyl-ato)gallium(III)] monohydrate], [Ga(C5H2N2O4)(OH)(H2O)] n or [Ga(HPDC)(OH)(H2O)] n , I, isotypic with a V3+ coordination polymer previously reported by Chen et al. [J. Coord. Chem. (2008). 61, 3556-3567] was prepared from Ga3+ and pyrazole-3,5-di-carb-oxy-lic acid monohydrate (H3PDC·H2O). Compound I was isolated using three distinct experimental methods: hydro-thermal (HT), microwave-assisted (MWAS) and one-pot (OP) and the crystallite size should be fine-tuned according to the method employed. The coordination polymeric structure is based on a dimeric Ga3+ moiety comprising two μ2-bridging hydroxide groups, which are inter-connected by HPDC2- anionic organic linkers. The close packing of individual polymers is strongly directed by the supra-molecular inter-actions, namely several O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions.

This concise synthesis features an aza-Heck cyclization to construct the complex spirocyclic ring system and provides a rare example of the use of aza-Heck cyclizations in complex molecule synthesis. To enable this key cyclization of an electrophilic nitrogen atom with a tetrasubstituted alkene, we utilized high-throughput experimentation to identify a new ligand and ultimately deliver impatien A in seven steps from known compounds.
