Heterogeneous changes of soil microclimate in high mountains and glacier forelands.

ABSTRACT: Landscapes nearby glaciers are disproportionally affected by climate change, but we lack detailed information on microclimate variations that can modulate the impacts of global warming on proglacial ecosystems and their biodiversity. Here, we use near-subsurface soil temperatures in 175 stations from polar, equatorial and alpine glacier forelands to generate high-resolution temperature reconstructions, assess spatial variability in microclimate change from 2001 to 2020, and estimate whether microclimate heterogeneity might buffer the severity of warming trends. Temporal changes in microclimate are tightly linked to broad-scale conditions, but the rate of local warming shows great spatial heterogeneity, with faster warming nearby glaciers and during the warm season, and an extension of the snow-free season. Still, most of the fine-scale spatial variability of microclimate is one-to-ten times larger than the temporal change experienced during the past 20 years, indicating the potential for microclimate to buffer climate change, possibly allowing organisms to withstand, at least temporarily, the effects of warming.

Project description:Since the last glacial maximum, soil formation related to ice-cover shrinkage has been one major sink of carbon accumulating as soil organic matter (SOM), a phenomenon accelerated by the ongoing global warming. In recently deglacierized forelands, processes of SOM accumulation, including those that control carbon and nitrogen sequestration rates and biogeochemical stability of newly sequestered carbon, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the build-up of SOM during the initial stages (up to 410 years) of topsoil development in 10 glacier forelands distributed on four continents. We test whether the net accumulation of SOM on glacier forelands (i) depends on the time since deglacierization and local climatic conditions (temperature and precipitation); (ii) is accompanied by a decrease in its stability and (iii) is mostly due to an increasing contribution of organic matter from plant origin. We measured total SOM concentration (carbon, nitrogen), its relative hydrogen/oxygen enrichment, stable isotopic (13 C, 15 N) and carbon functional groups (C-H, C=O, C=C) compositions, and its distribution in carbon pools of different thermal stability. We show that SOM content increases with time and is faster on forelands experiencing warmer climates. The build-up of SOM pools shows consistent trends across the studied soil chronosequences. During the first decades of soil development, the low amount of SOM is dominated by a thermally stable carbon pool with a small and highly thermolabile pool. The stability of SOM decreases with soil age at all sites, indicating that SOM storage is dominated by the accumulation of labile SOM during the first centuries of soil development, and suggesting plant carbon inputs to soil (SOM depleted in nitrogen, enriched in hydrogen and in aromatic carbon). Our findings highlight the potential vulnerability of SOM stocks from proglacial areas to decomposition and suggest that their durability largely depends on the relative contribution of carbon inputs from plants.

Project description:The period when the snowpack melts in late spring is a dynamic time for alpine ecosystems. The large winter microbial community begins to turn over rapidly, releasing nutrients to plants. Past studies have shown that the soil microbial community in alpine dry meadows of the Colorado Rocky Mountains changes in biomass, function, broad-level structure, and fungal diversity between winter and early summer. However, little specific information exists on the diversity of the alpine bacterial community or how it changes during this ecologically important period. We constructed clone libraries of 16S ribosomal DNA from alpine soil collected in winter, spring, and summer. We also cultivated bacteria from the alpine soil and measured the seasonal abundance of selected cultured isolates in hybridization experiments. The uncultured bacterial communities changed between seasons in diversity and abundance within taxa. The Acidobacterium division was most abundant in the spring. The winter community had the highest proportion of Actinobacteria and members of the Cytophaga/Flexibacter/Bacteroides (CFB) division. The summer community had the highest proportion of the Verrucomicrobium division and of beta-PROTEOBACTERIA: As a whole, alpha-Proteobacteria were equally abundant in all seasons, although seasonal changes may have occurred within this group. A number of sequences from currently uncultivated divisions were found, including two novel candidate divisions. The cultured isolates belonged to the alpha-, beta-, and gamma-Proteobacteria, the Actinobacteria, and the CFB groups. The only uncultured sequences that were closely related to the isolates were from winter and spring libraries. Hybridization experiments showed that actinobacterial and beta-proteobacterial isolates were most abundant during winter, while the alpha- and gamma-proteobacterial isolates tested did not vary significantly. While the cultures and clone libraries produced generally distinct groups of organisms, the two approaches gave consistent accounts of seasonal changes in microbial diversity.

Project description:The elevation of the snowline of the No. 1 Glacier in the Tianshan Mountains is increasing due to global warming, which has created favorable conditions for moss invasion and offers an opportunity to investigate the synergistic effects of incipient succession by mosses, plants, and soils. In this study, the concept of altitude distance was used instead of succession time. To investigate the changes of bacterial-community diversity in moss-covered soils during glacial degeneration, the relationship between bacterial community structure and environmental factors was analyzed and valuable microorganisms in moss-covered soils were explored. To do so, the determination of soil physicochemical properties, high-throughput sequencing, the screening of ACC-deaminase-producing bacteria, and the determination of ACC-deaminase activity of strains were performed on five moss-covered soils at different elevations. The results showed that the soil total potassium content, soil available phosphorus content, soil available potassium content, and soil organic-matter content of the AY3550 sample belt were significantly different compared with those of other sample belts (p < 0.05). Secondly, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the ACE index or Chao1 index between the moss-covered-soil AY3550 sample-belt and the AY3750 sample-belt bacterial communities as the succession progressed. The results of PCA analysis, RDA analysis, and cluster analysis at the genus level showed that the community structure of the AY3550 sample belt and the other four sample belts differed greatly and could be divided into two successional stages. The enzyme activities of the 33 ACC-deaminase-producing bacteria isolated and purified from moss-covered soil at different altitudes ranged from 0.067 to 4.7375 U/mg, with strains DY1-3, DY1-4, and EY2-5 having the highest enzyme activities. All three strains were identified as Pseudomonas by morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. This study provides a basis for the changes in moss-covered soil microhabitats during glacial degradation under the synergistic effects of moss, soil, and microbial communities, as well as a theoretical basis for the excavation of valuable microorganisms under glacial moss-covered soils.
