An unexpected new tree species from Gansu, China: Illiciumgansuense (Schisandraceae)

ABSTRACT: Abstract We describe the newly-discovered species Illiciumgansuense (Schisandraceae), discovered in the Yuhe area of Giant Panda National Park, Gansu, China. Morphologically, I.gansuense resembles I.ternstroemioides and I.arborescens. However, the new species can be distinguished by its smaller leaf size, the larger number of tepals, tepal margin ciliate, and distinct flowering and fruiting seasons.

Project description:Abstract Epimediumlongnanense, a new species of Epimedium (Berberidaceae) from Longnan Prefecture, Gansu Province, China, is here proposed and illustrated. E.longnanense has large flowers with petals possessing long spur and obvious basal lamina, and thus should be grouped into series Davidianae. The species closely resembles E.flavum of ser. Davidianae in morphology. However, it can be easily distinguished by its elongated rhizome (vs. compact), trifoliolate leaves (vs. five leaflets, sometimes trifoliolate), pale pink or purplish-red inner sepals with 6–8 × 2–3 mm (vs. pale sulphur-yellow, ca. 11 × 4 mm).

Liparistianchiensis (Orchidaceae), a new species from Gansu, China

Project description:Abstract Liparistianchiensis (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae), a new species from Wenxian County, Gansu Province, China, is described and illustrated, based on morphological characters. Liparistianchiensis is morphologically similar to L.damingshanensis, L.pauliana and L.mengziensis with erect, lax flowered-inflorescences, small persistent floral bracts, small greenish-purple flowers, spreading sepals, free reflexed and linear petals, a lip with 2 calli near the base and an arcuate column. Liparistianchiensis differs from L.pauliana by the single and much smaller leaf, shorter sepals and petals, smaller and reflexed oblong lip. It differs from L.mengziensis by having fewer and larger flowers and not connate lip apex. The novelty mostly resembles L.damingshanensis, but can be readily identified by having longer sepals and a reflexed oblong lip. Liparistianchiensis only occurs in evergreen broad-leaved forest around a mountain lake in Wenxian County, Gansu Province, China.

Oreocharis flavovirens, a new species of Gesneriaceae from Southern Gansu Province, China.

Project description:Oreocharis flavovirens is a new species of Gesneriaceae from Gansu, China and is described and illustrated here. It is morphologically similar to O. glandulosa, O. humilis and O. farreri, but those congeners of this new taxon can be distinguished by several salient characters. A description of O. flavovirens, together with illustrations and photos, are presented.

Sinoseneciominshanicus (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from south-eastern Gansu and northern Sichuan, China.

Project description:Sinoseneciominshanicus (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from south-eastern Gansu (Wenxian and Zhugqu counties) and northern Sichuan (Pingwu county), China, is described and illustrated. This species is similar to S.rotundifolius, a species locally endemic to Songpan county in northern Sichuan, in having a scapigerous habit, orbicular leaves and solitary capitula, but differs by the presence (vs. absence) of stolons and by having thinner rhizomes (ca. 2 mm vs. more than 5 mm in diameter), stems proximally sparsely fulvous arachnoid or glabrescent (vs. densely sericeous-villous) and obscure (vs. conspicuous) main veins on adaxial surface of leaves. The chromosome number of the new species is reported to be 2n = 60. Colour photographs of living plants in the wild and a distribution map are provided for the new species and S.rotundifolius. The geographical distribution of S.rotundifolius is also corrected, with the previous record of this species from south-eastern Gansu (Wenxian county) actually referring to S.minshanicus.

A new species of Triplophysa (Cypriniformes, Nemacheilidae) from Weihe River in Gansu Province, China.

Project description:A new species of Tibetan loach, Triplophysa weiheensis sp. nov., is described from the Weihe River in Gansu Province, China, based on morphological and molecular analyses. The new species can be distinguished from all known congeners by a unique combination of the following characters: scaleless; snout abruptly sloping downward, anterior to anterior nostril; lower jaw crescentic, not sharp; body without obvious mottling; lateral line interrupted on posterior trunk at pelvic-fin distal extremity; caudal-peduncle length 2.0-2.7 times its depth; branched rays of pectoral fin 10-11; branched rays of pelvic fin 5-6; inner gill rakers on 1 st gill arch 14-16; vertebrae 4+34-36; intestine with 6-7 loops, length ca. 1.8 times SL ( n=3); bony capsule of air bladder small and thin; posterior chamber of air bladder absent.

Hedysarumqilianshanense sp. nov. (Fabaceae, Hedysareae), a new species from the Qilianshan Mountains in Gansu, China.

Project description:Hedysarumqilianshanensesp. nov. (Fabaceae, Hedysareae) is described and illustrated from the Qilianshan Mountains in Gansu, China. This new species is similar to H.przewalskii, but can be distinguished by its corolla being light purple to purple, standard 15-19 mm long, wings 14-16 mm long, keels 16-19 mm long, and the ovary and legume being glabrous. The new species can be easily distinguished from H.neglectum Ledeb. by its bract being shorter than the pedicel, and the ovary and legume being glabrous. Phylogenetic tree based on the nuclear ITS and ETS sequences shows that H.qilianshanense is sister to H.przewalskii, while the tree based on the plastid psbA-trnH, trnC-petN, trnL-F, trnS-G and petN-psbM sequences shows H.qilianshanense as sister to a clade consisting of H.hedysaroides, H.inundatum, H.americanum and H.neglectum. The new species is a diploid with the chromosome number 2n = 14. Based on morphological, phylogenetic and karyotypic evidence, the new species may originate from an ancient homoploid hybrid speciation event.

Eight new Leptographium species associated with tree-infesting bark beetles in China.

Project description:Leptographium spp. are anamorphs of Grosmannia residing in the order Ophiostomatales. These fungi are typically associated with bark-beetles and are common causal agents of sapstain in lumber and some are important tree pathogens. In this study, Leptographium spp. associated with bark beetles collected during a survey in Jilin and Yunnan provinces of China, were identified. Identifications were achieved using comparisons of morphological characters and DNA sequence data for the ITS2-partial LSU rDNA region, as well as the ?-tubulin and EF-1? gene regions. Eight unknown species of Leptographium are recognised and described from conifer and hardwood hosts, associated with beetles including Ips subelongatus, Tomicus yunnanensis, Hylurgops minor, Polygraphus verrucifrons and a Pissodes sp. Six of the new species are morphologically and phylogenetically related to species known to occur in Asia such as G. yunnanense, L. bhutanense, L. bistatum and L. sinoprocerum. The remaining two taxa are related to those in a group containing G. americana and L. abietinum, found in North America. This study also provides the first report of L. pineti on Pinus kesiya in China.

Endiandramacrocarpa (Lauraceae), a new tree species from south-western China.

Project description:Endiandramacrocarpa, a new species of Endiandra (Lauraceae) from Yunnan Province of south-western China, is here described and illustrated, based on morphological evidence. Compared to other Endiandra species occurring in south China and the adjacent regions in Indochina, this species is mainly characterised by its much larger ellipsoidal fruits (up to 11 × 6 cm), as well as glabrous branchlets and puberulent inflorescences.

Two new Inosperma (Inocybaceae) species with unexpected muscarine contents from tropical China.

Project description:An accurate identification of poisonous mushrooms and the confirmation of the toxins involved are both of great importance in the treatment of mushroom poisoning incidents. In recent years, cases of mushroom poisoning by Inosperma spp. have been repeatedly reported from tropical Asia. It is urgent to know the real species diversity of Inosperma in this region. In the present study, we proposed two new Inosperma species from tropical Asia, namely I.muscarium and I.hainanense. They were described based on morphology and multilocus phylogeny. Detailed descriptions, color photographs and the discussion with other closely related species of the two new taxa were provided. In addition, a comprehensive muscarine determination of these two new species using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) approach has been performed. Results showed that these two species were muscarine positive, with a content of 16.03 ± 1.23 g/kg in I.muscarium and a content of 11.87 ± 3.02 g/kg in I.hainanense, much higher than the known species I.virosum. Recovery of muscarine ranged from 93.45% to 97.25%, and the average recovery is 95.56%.
