Is time an embodied property of concepts?

ABSTRACT: A haircut usually lasts under an hour. But how long does it take to recognize that something is an instance of a haircut? And is this "time-to-perceive" a part of the representation of concepts like haircut? Across three experiments testing lexical decision, word recognition, and semantic decision, we show that the amount of time people say it takes to perceive a concept in the world (e.g., haircut, dandelion, or merit) predicts how long it takes for them to respond to a word referring to that thing, over and above the effects of other lexical-semantic variables (e.g., word frequency, concreteness) and other variables related to conceptual complexity (e.g., how confusable a concept is with other, similar concepts, or the diversity of the contexts in which a concept appears). These results suggest that our experience of how long it takes to recognize an instance of a concept can become a part of its representation, and that we simulate this information when reading words. Consequently, we suggest that time may be an embodied property of concepts.

Project description:The relation of abstract concepts to the modality-specific systems is discussed controversially. According to classical approaches, the semantic content of abstract concepts can only be coded by amodal or verbal-symbolic representations distinct from the sensory and motor systems, because abstract concepts lack a clear physical referent. Grounded cognition theories, in contrast, propose that abstract concepts do not depend only on the verbal system, but also on a variety of modal systems involving perception, action, emotion and internal states. In order to contribute to this debate, we investigated the semantic content of abstract concepts using a property generation task. Participants were asked to generate properties for 296 abstract concepts, which are relevant for constituting their meaning. These properties were categorized by a coding-scheme making a classification into modality-specific and verbal contents possible. Words were additionally rated with regard to concreteness/abstractness and familiarity. To identify possible subgroups of abstract concepts with distinct profiles of generated features, hierarchical cluster analyses were conducted. Participants generated a substantial proportion of introspective, affective, social, sensory and motor-related properties, in addition to verbal associations. Cluster analyses revealed different subcategories of abstract concepts, which can be characterized by the dominance of certain conceptual features. The present results are therefore compatible with grounded cognition theories, which emphasize the importance of linguistic, social, introspective and affective experiential information for the representation of abstract concepts. Our findings also indicate that abstract concepts are highly heterogeneous requiring the investigation of well-specified subcategories of abstract concepts, for instance as revealed by the present cluster analyses. The present study could thus guide future behavioral or imaging work further elucidating the representation of abstract concepts.

Project description:Understanding the real-time dynamical mechanisms of neural systems remains a significant issue, preventing the development of efficient neural technology and user trust. This is because the mechanisms, involving various neural spatial-temporal ingredients [i.e., neural structure (NS), neural dynamics (ND), neural plasticity (NP), and neural memory (NM)], are too complex to interpret and analyze altogether. While advanced tools have been developed using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), node-link diagram, topography map, and other visualization techniques, they still fail to monitor and visualize all of these neural ingredients online. Accordingly, we propose here for the first time "NeuroVis," real-time neural spatial-temporal information measurement and visualization, as a method/tool to measure temporal neural activities and their propagation throughout the network. By using this neural information along with the connection strength and plasticity, NeuroVis can visualize the NS, ND, NM, and NP via i) spatial 2D position and connection, ii) temporal color gradient, iii) connection thickness, and iv) temporal luminous intensity and change of connection thickness, respectively. This study presents three use cases of NeuroVis to evaluate its performance: i) function approximation using a modular neural network with recurrent and feedforward topologies together with supervised learning, ii) robot locomotion control and learning using the same modular network with reinforcement learning, and iii) robot locomotion control and adaptation using another larger-scale adaptive modular neural network. The use cases demonstrate how NeuroVis tracks and analyzes all neural ingredients of various (embodied) neural systems in real-time under the robot operating system (ROS) framework. To this end, it will offer the opportunity to better understand embodied dynamic neural information processes, boost efficient neural technology development, and enhance user trust.

Project description:Meaning has been established pervasively as a central concept throughout disciplines that were involved in cognitive revolution. Its metaphoric usage comes to be, first and foremost, through the interpreter's constraint: representational relationships and contents are considered to be in the "eye" or mind of the observer and shared properties among observers themselves are knowable through interlinguistic phenomena, such as translation. Despite the instability of meaning in relation to its underdetermination by reference, it can be a tertium comparationis or "third comparator" for extended human cognition if gauged through invariants that exist in transfer processes such as translation, as all languages and cultures are rooted in pan-human experience and, thus, share and express species-specific ontology. Meaning, seen as a cognitive competence, does not stop outside of the body but extends, depends, and partners with other agents and the environment. A novel approach for exploring the transfer properties of some constituent items of the original natural semantic metalanguage in English, that is, semantic primitives, is presented: FrameNet's semantic frames, evoked by the primes SEE and FEEL, were extracted from EuroParl, a parallel corpus that allows for the automatic word alignment of items with their synonyms. Large Ontology Multilingual Extraction was used. Afterward, following the Semantic Mirrors Method, a procedure that consists back-translating into source language, a translatological examination of translated and original versions of items was performed. A fully automated pipeline was designed and tested, with the purpose of exploring associated frame shifts and, thus, beginning a research agenda on their alleged universality as linguistic features of translation, which will be complemented with and contrasted against further massive feedback through a citizen science approach, as well as cognitive and neurophysiological examinations. Additionally, an embodied account of frame semantics is proposed.
