Uptake of human papillomavirus vaccination and its associated factors among adolescents in Gambella town, Southwest, Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

To assess the uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and its associated factors among adolescents in Gambella town, Southwest Ethiopia.

Design

A community-based cross-sectional study.

Setting

Gambella town, Southwest Ethiopia.

Participants

A total of 882 adolescents were included between May and July 2022.

Outcome

Uptake of HPV vaccination.

Methods

A cluster sampling technique was used to select study participants. An interviewer-administered and pretested questionnaire was used to collect the data. The collected data were entered into Epi-data V.4.6 and exported to STATA V.16 for cleaning, coding and analysis. A binary logistic regression model was used to test the association between independent and dependent variables. Variables with a p<0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression were considered statistically significant factors for the uptake of HPV vaccination.

Results

A total of 825 adolescents participated in this study. Among participants, 48% (95% CI 44.6% to 51.4%) have been vaccinated for HPV. Ever heard of the HPV vaccine (AOR 2.5, 95% CI 1.23 to 5.08), good knowledge of HPV infection (AOR 3.62, 95% CI 2.17 to 6.02), good knowledge of the HPV vaccine (AOR 5.54, 95% CI 3.28 to 9.36) and attitude towards the HPV vaccine (AOR 2.74, 95% CI 1.88 to 3.98) were significantly associated HPV vaccination.

Conclusion

In the current study, the uptake of HPV vaccination was found to be low. The finding highlights the importance of promoting community health education about HPV infection and vaccines and providing behaviour change education, which plays a substantial role in promoting the uptake of HPV vaccination.

Project description:IntroductionVernal keratoconjunctivitis is a chronic bilateral severe form of allergic conjunctivitis which affects normal activities in school/work. It is a severe form of allergies in warm and dry tropical and sub-tropical countries. Its prevalence in Ethiopia ranges from 5.2% to7.3%. Most studies are institution based and do not address specific factors associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. There is no a study that shows the magnitude of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in the study area.ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of vernal keratoconjunctivitis and its associated factors among children in Gambella town, Southwest Ethiopia, 2018.Methods and materialsA community based cross-sectional study was conducted from April 25 to May 12, 2018, in Gambella town. A total of 578 study participants were selected using a systematic random sampling technique. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire, torch, and magnifying loop were used to collect data. The data was entered into epidemiological information 7.1 and exported to statistical package for social science for analysis. Binary logistic regression analysis model was fitted to identify factors associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Odds ratio with respected 95% CI was used to identify the direction and strength of association.ResultsA total of 574 children participated in this study representing a response rate of 99.30%. The mean age of the participants was 9.74±4.0 years. The prevalence of vernal keratoconjunctivitis was 11.10% (95% CI: 8.70, 13.90). Male sex (adjusted odds ratio = 4.12(95% CI: 1.42, 11.91)), close animal contact (adjusted odds ratio = 3.45(95% CI: 1.14, 10.41)), dust exposure (adjusted odds ratio = 3.38(95% CI: 1.31, 10.04)), and personal systemic allergy history (adjusted odds ratio = 4.82(1.40, 16.72) were independently associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.ConclusionThe prevalence of VKC was high among children in Gambella town. Sex being male, close animal contact, personal systemic allergy history, and dust exposure were positively associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis independently.

Project description:Background The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has offered a great promise to reduce the cervical cancer burden; its utilization (uptake) however has been lagging. However, the levels and factors associated with the uptake of the vaccine have not been well investigated, especially in the local context. Objective To assess the uptake of human papillomavirus vaccination and its associated factors among adolescent school girls in ambo town, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2020. Methods An institution-based cross-sectional quantitative study design supplemented with the qualitative inquiry was employed to assess Human Papillomavirus vaccination uptake and its associated factors among 422 adolescent school girls in Ambo town, central Ethiopia from December 1–30, 2020. The collected data were coded, entered, and cleaned by using Epi info 7.2.3 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to compute summary statistics and proportions. Both bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was employed to identify factors associated with HPV vaccine uptake. Adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were used for the strength and directions of association. A P-value of < 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance. Qualitative findings have been analyzed with manual thematic analysis. Result The proportion of HPV vaccination uptake among school girls in this study was 44.4%. Hearing about HPV vaccine [AOR = 2.50, 95%CI: (1.045–5.959)], availability of awareness creation [AOR = 2.53, 95%CI: (1.507–4.258)], and favorable attitude [AOR = 2.049, 95%CI: (1.153–3.64)] were the key identified factors associated with vaccination uptake. In addition, poor perception, fear of side effects, and misunderstanding were among the major factors identified by qualitative findings. Conclusion There was low uptake of HPV vaccination among the school Adolescents in the study area. Availability of awareness creation programs, favorable attitude towards HPV vaccine, and hearing about HPV vaccine was significantly associated with the uptake of the HPV vaccination. Therefore, awareness creation and behavior change education are mandatory to scale up the vaccination.

Project description:IntroductionSuicidal behaviour is a major public health concern in Africa and a cause of premature mortality. The availability of community epidemiological data in Ethiopia is limited. This study assessed the prevalence of suicidal behaviour and its associated factors in Jimma Town, Southwest Ethiopia.MethodsUsing the Suicide Behaviour Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R), a community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted between September and November 2021. Multistage sampling was used to screen 636 participants for suicidal behaviour. The association between suicidal behaviour and other variables was explored using binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses.ResultsThe overall estimated prevalence of suicidal behaviour of the respondents in the study was 7.9% (95% CI 5.9% to 10.3%), using the SBQ-R score (>7). One-third of the individuals with lifetime attempts encountered stigma. Multivariable logistic regression models indicated that being female (AOR 2.81, 95% CI 1.48 to 5.31), having depression (AOR 6.9, 95% CI 1.98 to 24.57), family history of mental illness (AOR 4.11, 95% CI 1.38 to 12.19), poor social support (AOR 3.86, 95% CI 1.23 to 12.15) and good coping efficacy (AOR 0.91, 95% CI 0.88 to 0.94))were significantly associated for suicidal behaviour with p value less than 0.05.ConclusionThe overall prevalence of suicidal behaviour was relatively higher in this population than in other studies done in Ethiopia. In addition, the current study indicates the presence of suicide stigma, which further influences poor health-seeking behaviours. The factors significantly associated with suicidal behaviour in this study included being female, having a family history of mental illness, poor social support, poor coping self-efficacy and depressive symptoms. Findings warrant the attention of policy-makers in early screening of depression, developing preventive measures targeting risk factors and enhancing access to mental healthcare services.
