In Gram-positive bacteria such as <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> and the coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), the accessory gene regulator (<i>agr</i>) is a highly conserved but polymorphic quorum-sensing system involved in colonization, virulence and biofilm development.
