Project description:The development of highly active, inexpensive, and stable bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts to replace noble metal Pt and RuO2 catalysts remains a considerable challenge for highly demanded reversible fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Here, a simple approach for the facile construction of a defective nanocarbon material is reported with B and N dopants (B,N-carbon) as a superior bifunctional metal-free catalyst for both ORR and OER. The catalyst is prepared by pyrolyzing the composites of ethyl cellulose and high-boiling point 4-(1-naphthyl)benzeneboronic acid in NH3 atmosphere with an inexpensive Zn-based template. The obtained porous B,N-carbon with rich carbon defects exhibits excellent ORR and OER performances, including high activity and stability. In alkaline medium, B,N-carbon material shows high ORR activity with an onset potential (Eonset) reaching 0.98 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), very close to that of Pt/C, a high electron transfer number and excellent stability. This catalyst also presents the admirable ORR activity in acidic medium with a high Eonset of 0.81 V versus RHE and a four-electron process. The OER activity of B,N-carbon is superior to that of the precious metal RuO2 and Pt/C catalysts. A Zn-air battery using B,N-carbon as the air cathode exhibits a low voltage gap between charge and discharge and long-term stability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of this porous nanocarbon material is attributed to the combined positive effects of the abundant carbon defects and the heteroatom codopants.

Project description:In this work, defect-rich ordered mesoporous spinel oxides, including CoCo2O4, NiCo2O4, and ZnCo2O4, were developed as bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER, respectively). The materials are synthesized via nanocasting and modified by chemical treatment with 0.1 M NaBH4 solution to enhance the defect concentration. The synthesized samples have metal and oxygen divacancies (VCo + VO) as the primary defect sites, as indicated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Cation substitution in the spinel structure induces a higher number of oxygen vacancies. The increased number of surface defects and the synergistic effect between two incorporated metals provide a high activity in both the OER and ORR in the case of NiCo2O4 and ZnCo2O4. Especially, ZnCo2O4 exhibits the highest OER/ORR activity. The defect engineering with 0.1 M NaBH4 solution results in a metal-hydroxylated surface (M-OH) and enhanced the catalytic activity for the post-treated metal oxides in the ORR and OER. This fundamental investigation of the defective structure of the mixed metal oxides offers some useful insights into further development of highly active electrocatalysts through defect engineering methods.

Project description:The development of unified regenerative fuel cells (URFCs) necessitates an active and stable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst. The unique challenge of possessing high activity for both the oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions, while maintaining stability over a wide potential window impedes the design of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Herein, two design strategies are explored to optimize their performance. The first incorporates active sites for the ORR and OER, Mn and Co, into a single perovskite structure, which is achieved with the perovskites Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Mn0.2O3-δ (BSCM) and La0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25Co0.5Mn0.5O3-δ (LBSCM). The second combines an active ORR perovskite catalyst (La0.4Sr0.6MnO3-δ (LSM)) with an OER active perovskite catalyst (Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF)) in a physical mixed composite (BSCF/LSM). The success of the two strategies is investigated by measuring the catalysts' catalytic performance and response to alternating reducing and oxidizing potentials to mimic the dynamic conditions experienced during the operation of URFCs. Additionally, the continuous, potentiodynamic change in Mn, Co, and Fe oxidation states during the ORR and OER is elucidated with operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, revealing key insights into the nature of the active sites. The results reveal important catalyst physiochemical properties and provide a guide for future research and design principles for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

Project description:Efficient and robust platinum-carbon electrocatalysts are of great significance for the long-term service of high-performance fuel cells. Here, we report a Pt alloy integrated in a cobalt-nitrogen-nanocarbon matrix by a multiscale design principle for efficient oxygen reduction reaction. This Pt integrated catalyst demonstrates an increased mass activity, 11.7 times higher than that of commercial Pt catalyst, and retains a stability of 98.7% after 30,000 potential cycles. Additionally, this integrated catalyst delivers a current density of 1.50 A cm-2 at 0.6 V in the hydrogen-air fuel cell and achieves a power density of 980 mW cm-2. Comprehensive investigations demonstrate that the synergistic contribution of components and structure in the platinum-carbon integrated catalyst is responsible for the high-efficiency ORR in fuel cells.

Project description:Summary Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most produced polyester plastic; its waste has a disruptive impact on the environment and ecosystem. Here, we report a catalytic depolymerization of PET into bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) using molecule oxygen (O2)−assisted in defect-rich ZnO. At air, the PET conversion rate, the BHET yield, and the space-time yield are 3.5, 10.6, and 10.6 times higher than those in nitrogen, respectively. Combining structural characterization with the results of DFT calculations, we conclude that the (100) facet of defect-rich ZnO nanosheets conducive to the formation of reactive oxygen species (∗O2−) and Zn defect, promotes the PET breakage of the ester bond and thus complete the depolymerization processed. This approach demonstrates a sustainable route for PET depolymerization by molecule-assisted defect engineering. Project description:Exploring bifunctional electrocatalysts to lower the activation energy barriers for sluggish electrochemical reactions for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are of great importance in achieving lower energy consumption and higher conversion efficiency for future energy conversion and storage system. Despite the excellent performance of precious metal-based electrocatalysts for OER and ORR, their high cost and scarcity hamper their large-scale industrial application. As alternatives to precious metal-based electrocatalysts, the development of earth-abundant and efficient catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performance in both the OER and the ORR is urgently required. Herein, we report a core-shell CoFeS2@CoS2 heterostructure entangled with carbon nanotubes as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both the OER and the ORR. The CoFeS2@CoS2 nanocubes entangled with carbon nanotubes show superior electrochemical performance for both the OER and the ORR: a potential of 1.5 V (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the OER in alkaline medium and an onset potential of 0.976 V for the ORR. This work suggests a processing methodology for the development of the core-shell heterostructures with enhanced bifunctional performance for both the OER and the ORR.

Project description:Recently, alkaline direct methanol fuel cells have made great progress with the development of alkaline electrocatalysis, and a wide variety of catalysts have been explored for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR)and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the slow kinetics of the MOR and ORR remain a great challenge. In this paper, self-supported defect-rich AuCu was obtained by a convenient one-pot strategy. Self-supported AuCu presented a branched, porous nanostructure. The nanobranch consisted of several 13 nm skeletons, which connected in the kink of the structure. Different growth directions co-existed at the kink, and the twin boundaries and dislocations as defects were observed. When the Au-based nanostructure functioned as an electrocatalyst, it showed robust MOR and ORR performance. For the MOR, the forward peak current was 2.68 times greater than that of Au/C; for the ORR, the activity was close to that of Pt/C and significantly better than that of Au/C. In addition, it possessed superior electrochemical stability for MOR and ORR. Finally, an in-depth exploration of the impact of surface defects and electrochemical Cu removal on MOR and ORR activity was carried out to explain the MOR and ORR's catalytic performance.

Project description:Defect engineering is a key chemical tool to modulate the electronic structure and reactivity of nanostructured catalysts. Here, it is reported how targeted introduction of defect sites in a 2D palladium metallene nanostructure results in a highly active catalyst for the alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A defect-rich WOx and MoOx modified Pd metallene (denoted: D-Pd M) is synthesized by a facile and scalable approach. Detailed structural analyses reveal the presence of three distinct atomic-level defects, that are pores, concave surfaces, and surface-anchored individual WOx and MoOx sites. Mechanistic studies reveal that these defects result in excellent catalytic ORR activity (half-wave potential 0.93 V vs. RHE, mass activity 1.3 A mgPd-1 at 0.9 V vs. RHE), outperforming the commercial references Pt/C and Pd/C by factors of ≈7 and ≈4, respectively. The practical usage of the compound is demonstrated by integration into a custom-built Zn-air battery. At low D-Pd M loading (26 µgPd cm-2), the system achieves high specific capacity (809 mAh gZn -1) and shows excellent discharge potential stability. This study therefore provides a blueprint for the molecular design of defect sites in 2D metallene nanostructures for advanced energy technology applications.
