Test study on mechanical properties of compound municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash premixed fluidized solidified soil.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSW-IBA) is used as the fine aggregate and firming agent component of the premixed fluid stabilized soil (PFSS). Through the mechanical strength test, and the hydration products and microstructure characterization, the effects of the NaOH content for MSW-IBA pre-aging treatment and activator content on the mechanical properties of the PFSS are studied. The results show that the mechanical strength of the prepared PFSS is closely related to the amount of NaOH and the activator. The increase in the amount of NaOH and activator can affect the formation of early hydration product Aft, and reduce the early strength. However, it can promote the depolymerization of glass phase in MSW-IBA and slag to form C-(A)-S-H and Mg-(A)-S-H gel, increase the microstructure density, and thus improve the late strength. The application of MSW-IBA in PFSS can achieve the recycling of solid waste.

Effect of Mass Proportion of Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator Bottom Ash Layer to Municipal Solid Waste Layer on the Cu and Zn Discharge from Landfill.

Project description:Municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash is often used as the protection layer for the geomembrane and intermediate layer in the landfill. In this study, three sets of simulated landfills with different mass proportion of MSWI bottom ash layer to municipal solid waste (MSW) layer were operated. Cu and Zn concentrations in the leachates and MSW were monitored to investigate the effect of MSWI bottom ash layer on the Cu and Zn discharge from the landfill. The results showed that the Zn discharge was dependent on the mass proportion of MSWI bottom ash layer. The pH of landfill was not notably increased when the mass proportion of MSWI bottom ash layer to MSW layer was 1 : 9, resulting in the enhancement of the Zn discharge. However, Zn discharge was mitigated when the mass proportion was 2 : 8, as the pH of landfill was notably promoted. The discharge of Cu was not dependent on the mass proportion, due to the great affinity of Cu to organic matter. Moreover, Cu and Zn contents of the sub-MSW layer increased due to the MSWI bottom ash layer. Therefore, the MSWI bottom ash layer can increase the potential environmental threat of the landfill.

Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-glycerol composite films incorporating nanosilica from municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash.

Project description:This study investigates the fabrication of a composite film composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycerol, incorporating nanosilica derived from municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (BA). The nanosilica is blended with a PVA film-forming solution containing glycerol as a plasticizer. The composite films are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is conducted to evaluate the thermal properties, while the mechanical properties are assessed in terms of tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB). The results indicate that the presence of silica nanoparticles reduces transparency and increases film thickness in the presence of glycerol. Notably, the film containing 1% silica demonstrates a significant enhancement in tensile strength, exhibiting a 50% increase compared to the film without silica. However, higher silica loadings lead to a deterioration in mechanical properties due to silica agglomeration within the polymer matrix. As expected, the presence of silica in the films slightly elevates the degradation temperature.

Onsite treatment of wastes in municipal waste incinerator: Co-sintering of fly ash and leachate sludge into value-added ceramic granule.

Project description:The leachate sludge (LS) and fly ash (FA) are the foci of hazardous wastes which generated from the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). The current work developed a new way to use energy from MSWI process for the on-site sintering of LS and FA at a relatively low temperature. With the assistance of CaF2, granule of LS and MSWI FA were co-sintered. The influence of temperature, the mass of CaF2, and the mass ratio of LS/MSWI FA were investigated. As a result, heavy metals volatilization and leaching in the form of chlorinated salts were controlled. In addition, CaF2 improved the compressive strength of the granule under low-temperature sintering. Moreover, the scale-up co-sintering test was achieved in an MSWI chamber. The results showed that the optimum condition was sintering at 973K for 1 h. The compressive strength of sintered product reached 4.25 MPa, which met the standard of ceramic granule. Moreover, with the addition of CaF2, the volatilization rate of Pb, Zn, and Cd decreased by 6%, 7%, and 6%, respectively. This method can be a promising technique for the utilization of solid wastes.

Mesoporous Silica Derived from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator (MSWI) Ash Slag: Synthesis, Characterization and Use as Supports for Au(III) Recovery.

Project description:In this study, the effect of NaOH on the synthesis of mesoporous silica (MS) by using municipal solid-waste incinerator (MSWI) ash slag was investigated. Moreover, the prepared MS was used as a support to evaluate its potential for the recovery of gold ions (Au(III)) from aqueous solution. The extraction process for the MSWI ash slag activated through mechanical grinding entailed alkali treatment, using varying concentrations of NaOH. The content of Si extracted from MSWI ash slag increased with the increasing grinding time and NaOH concentration. As the NaOH concentration increased, the pore structure (e.g., Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume) of the synthesized MS improved. In addition, the amount of adsorbed Au(III) increased with increasing sulfur content immobilized on the support, and the sulfur content was in turn governed by the silanol content of the MS support. The adsorbent prepared by using the MS-3M support exhibited the highest Au(III) adsorption capacity (110.3 mg/g), and its adsorption-desorption efficiency was not significantly affected even after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Recycling of Pre-Washed Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator Fly Ash in the Manufacturing of Low Temperature Setting Geopolymer Materials.

Project description:In this work, three samples of municipal solid waste incinerators fly ash (MSWI-FA) have been stabilized in systems containing coal fly ash to create geopolymers through a polycondensation reaction. Monolithic products have been obtained with both MSWI fly ash as received and after the partial removal of chloride and sulfate by water washing. The polycondensation products have been characterized qualitatively by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and quantitatively, through the determination of the volume of reacted water and silicate. Furthermore, the heavy metals and chloride releases together with the physico-mechanical properties have been evaluated on the hardened products. In conclusion, considering the technological and environmental performances of the obtained geopolymers, they could be suitable for many non-structural applications, such as backfilling of abandoned quarries, decorative materials or brick fireplaces, hearths, patios, etc.

Repercussions of clinical waste co-incineration in municipal solid waste incinerator during COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:During coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the exponential increase in clinical waste (CW) generation has caused immense burden to CW treatment facilities. Co-incineration of CW in municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) is an emergency treatment method. A material flow model was developed to estimate the change in feedstock characteristics and resulting acid gas emission under different CW co-incineration ratios. The ash contents and lower heating values of the feedstocks, as well as HCl concentrations in flue gas showed an upward trend. Subsequently, 72 incineration residue samples were collected from a MSWI performing co-incineration (CW ratio <10 wt%) in Wuhan city, China, followed by 20 incineration residues samples from waste that were not co-incineration. The results showed that the contents of major elements and non-volatile heavy metals in the air pollution control residues increased during co-incineration but were within the reported ranges, whereas those in the bottom ashes revealed no significant changes. The impact of CW co-incineration at a ratio <10 wt% on the distribution of elements in the incineration residues was not significant. However, increase in alkali metals and HCl in flue gas may cause potential boiler corrosion. These results provide valuable insights into pollution control in MSWI during pandemic.

A Novel Dry Treatment for Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Bottom Ash for the Reduction of Salts and Potential Toxic Elements.

Project description:The main obstacle to bottom ash (BA) being used as a recycling aggregate is the content of salts and potential toxic elements (PTEs), concentrated in a layer that coats BA particles. This work presents a dry treatment for the removal of salts and PTEs from BA particles. Two pilot-scale abrasion units (with/without the removal of the fine particles) were fed with different BA samples. The performance of the abrasion tests was assessed through the analyses of particle size and moisture, and that of the column leaching tests at solid-to-liquid ratios between 0.3 and 4. The results were: the particle-size distribution of the treated materials was homogeneous (25 wt % had dimensions <6.3 mm) and their moisture halved, as well as the electrical conductivity of the leachates. A significant decrease was observed in the leachates of the treated BA for sulphates (44%), chlorides (26%), and PTEs (53% Cr, 60% Cu and 8% Mo). The statistical analysis revealed good correlations between chloride and sulphate concentrations in the leachates with Ba, Cu, Mo, and Sr, illustrating the consistent behavior of the major and minor components of the layer surrounding BA particles. In conclusion, the tested process could be considered as promising for the improvement of BA valorization.

Characterization and evaluation of the leachability of bottom ash from a mobile emergency incinerator of COVID-19 medical waste: A case study in Huoshenshan Hospital, Wuhan, China.

Project description:To dispose of the medical waste generated during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new type of mobile emergency incinerator (MEI) was used in Huoshenshan Hospital, Wuhan, China, and consequently, it produced a number of medical bottom ashs (MBAs). In this study, the characterization and environmental risk evaluation of these MBAs were conducted to evaluate the disposal effect of this MEI used during the pandemic. Three types of leaching tests, EN 12457-2, TCLP 1311, and HJ/T 299-2007, were compared to investigate the release behaviors of major and trace elements from these MBAs. Lack of detection of COVID-19 in MBAs showed that this mobile emergency incinerator could thoroughly eliminate the COVID-19 virus in medical wastes to avoid secondary transmission. The results indicated that the increasing usage of chlorinated disinfectants and physiological saline solutions resulted in high Cl contents in MBAs. In addition, the increasing usage of polypropylene (PP) products changed the chemical properties and compositions of MBAs, with Ca as the main element. The leachability investigation revealed that the main metals in leachates were Ca, Na and K, and the toxic heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cr in MBAs were difficult to extract because of the high pH (>12) of these MBAs. This study could provide consultation for the treatment and management of MBAs produced from MEIs dealing with emergent infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

Analysis of heavy metal, rare, precious, and metallic element content in bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration in Tehran based on particle size.

Project description:Waste incineration is increasingly used worldwide for better municipal solid waste management and energy recovery. However, residues resulting from waste incineration, such as Bottom Ash (BA) and Fly Ash (FA), can pose environmental and human health risks due to their physicochemical properties if not managed appropriately. On the other hand, with proper utilization, these residues can be turned into valuable Municipal metal mines. In this study, BA was granulated in various size ranges (< 0.075 mm, 0.075-0.125 mm, 0.125-0.5 mm, 0.5-1 mm, 1-2 mm, 2-4 mm, 4-16 mm, and > 16 mm). The physicochemical properties, heavy metal elements, environmental hazards, and other rare and precious metal elements in each Granulated Bottom Ash (GBA) group from Tehran's waste incineration were examined using ICP-MASS. Additionally, each GBA group's mineralogical properties and elemental composition were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the average concentration of heavy metals in GBA, including Zn (1974 mg/kg), Cu, and Ba (790 mg/kg), Pb (145 mg/kg), Cr (106 mg/kg), Ni (25 mg/kg), Sn (24 mg/kg), V (25 mg/kg), As (11 mg/kg), and Sb (29 mg/kg), was higher in particles smaller than 4 mm. Precious metals such as gold (average 0.3 mg/kg) and silver (average 11 mg/kg) were significantly higher in GBA particles smaller than 0.5 mm, making their extraction economically feasible. Moreover, rare metals such as Ce, Nd, La, and Y were detected in GBA, with average concentrations of 24, 8, 11, and 7 mg/kg, respectively. The results of this study indicated that BA contains environmentally concerning metals, as well as rare and precious metals, with high concentrations, especially in particles smaller than 4 mm. This highlights the need for proper pre-treatment before using these materials in civil and municipal applications or even landfilling.
