Implementation of a gene therapy education initiative by the ASGCT and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences.

ABSTRACT: There has been rapid growth in gene therapy development with an expanding list of approved clinical products. Several therapies are particularly relevant to patients in low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, investing in research and manufacturing presents an opportunity for economic development. To increase awareness of gene therapy, the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy partnered with the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Tanzania, to create a certificate-bearing course. The goal was to provide faculty teaching in graduate and medical schools with the tools needed to add gene therapy to the university curriculum. The first virtual course was held in October of 2022, and 45 individuals from 9 countries in Africa completed the training. The content was new to approximately two-thirds of participants, with the remaining third indicating that the course increased their knowledge base. The program was well received and will be adapted for other under-resourced regions.

Project description:BackgroundThe basic science course is the foundation of medical knowledge, and how and in what form the teaching of this course is a vital issue. A successful curriculum should include everything medical students need in their future careers. Basic science education should be such that students clearly understand the relationship between the content and its application in clinical practice. Therefore, the need to change the curriculum of the general medicine course, especially course of the Basic science, in content and layout in an integrated way is felt more than before. This study was designed to explain the experiences of medical students from the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences since the implementation of integration in 2020.MethodsThe present study was qualitative research with a conventional content analysis method. Participants were selected for the interview purposefully. They included 12 Medical students from basic and clinical sciences and 5 faculty members. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and the content analysis method. Four methods of Goba and Lincoln were used to evaluate the accuracy of the data.ResultsAfter summarizing and analyzing the data, 221 codes were extracted. They were divided into seven subcategories and finally, three main themes including Enjoyable experiences (advantages of the integration system), Upsetting experiences (Disadvantages of the integration system), Resolutions to solving integration problems were extracted. Generally, the findings indicated a positive evaluation of medical students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences from the integration system, and they stated that the integration causes an interaction between basic and clinical sciences and also increases students' motivation.ConclusionThe findings indicated a positive evaluation of Shiraz's medical students of the integrated system. According to the results of this research, it can be said; that the use of integration horizontally and vertically in medical education improves the quality of education compared to traditional methods. The integration of basic and clinical science is important in the sense that can be a powerful tool for learning and acquiring skills, also, it can also help in the promotion of professional development of students and motivate them to study more in interactive manner and be loyal to lifelong learning. study generally showed that combining theoretical and practical courses has advantages and disadvantages, but its advantages are more. Paying attention to the shortcomings, especially in the supply of human resources and professors, and reforming the program with continuous revision are issues that education managers and medical educators of the general medical practice should address.

Project description:BackgroundThe University of California's Diabetes Prevention Program (UC DPP) Initiative was implemented systemwide to address diabetes and obesity risk on all 10 campuses. As little is known about implementing lifestyle change programs in university settings, we examined implementation partners' (i.e., UC DPP leaders and campus leads) perceptions of factors influencing program success on UC campuses.MethodsWe conducted qualitative interviews with UC DPP leaders and campus leads to examine challenges and opportunities with university-based DPP delivery models. Interviews were recorded, professionally transcribed, and reviewed in detail by the research team. Transcripts were analyzed using rapid qualitative analysis (RQA). The study was approved by the UCLA Institutional Review Board. All implementation partners provided verbal informed consent.ResultsTwenty-six implementation partners (8 UC DPP leaders and 18 campus leads) completed interviews in 2021. Seven themes were identified as critical for implementation, including (1) marketing and recruitment (i.e., market and recruit broadly through established channels as well as target at-risk populations); (2) enrollment (i.e., offer the program during convenient times and let participants know what to expect); (3) use an adaptable, evidence-based program; (4) secure funding for the program, participants, lifestyle coaches, and space; (5) hire experienced and dedicated staff and lifestyle coaches; (6) ensure leadership support; and (7) utilize campus linkages and resources. Perceptions of challenges faced with respect to these themes are also described.ConclusionsThis is one of the first studies to examine the challenges and opportunities of delivering an intensive lifestyle change program across 10 university sites. Understanding factors that enhance success of university-based diabetes prevention programs can facilitate UC DPP efforts and help inform delivery strategies of health and wellness programs across other university settings more broadly.

Project description:BackgroundIncorporating interprofessional collaboration within healthcare is critical to delivery of patient-centered care. Interprofessional Education (IPE) programs are key to promoting such collaboration. The 'Public Health Service' (PHS) in France is a mandatory IPE initiative that embodies this collaborative spirit, bringing together students from varied health undergraduate training programs-nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, midwifery, and medicine- in a common training program focused on primary prevention. The aim of the study was to assess the experience and attitudes of students in the five health training programs regarding the interest of IPEs in the PHS.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was administered to 823 students from the 2022-2023 cohort at a French university. The questionnaire was designed with 12 Likert-scale questions specifically created to evaluate the students' experiences, knowledge, and attitudes focused on IPE during the practical seminars, school interventions, and the overall PHS. Additionally, an open-ended question was utilized to gather qualitative data. Statistical analyses assessed satisfaction levels across undergraduate training programs, while thematic analysis was applied to the qualitative responses.ResultsWithin the surveyed cohort, 344 students responded to the survey. The findings showed that students were satisfied with the interprofessional collaboration, both in practical teaching sessions (75% satisfaction) and in primary prevention projects conducted in schools (70% satisfaction), despite their having faced challenges with coordination. Pharmacy students, in particular, highlighted the need for adjustments in program scheduling. The qualitative feedback underscored the positive value of IPE, notwithstanding the organizational difficulties stemming from different academic timetables.ConclusionThe student feedback indicated a high level of satisfaction with the interprofessional work carried out in both the practical teaching and the primary prevention projects. To further enhance the educational impact and address the scheduling complexities, it is recommended that program refinements be made based on student feedback and pedagogical best practices.
