Inferring the diurnal variability of OH radical concentrations over the Amazon from BVOC measurements.

ABSTRACT: The atmospheric oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by OH radicals over tropical rainforests impacts local particle production and the lifetime of globally distributed chemically and radiatively active gases. For the pristine Amazon rainforest during the dry season, we empirically determined the diurnal OH radical variability at the forest-atmosphere interface region between 80 and 325 m from 07:00 to 15:00 LT using BVOC measurements. A dynamic time warping approach was applied showing that median averaged mixing times between 80 to 325 m decrease from 105 to 15 min over this time period. The inferred OH concentrations show evidence for an early morning OH peak (07:00-08:00 LT) and an OH maximum (14:00 LT) reaching 2.2 (0.2, 3.8) × 10⁶molecules cm^-3 controlled by the coupling between BVOC emission fluxes, nocturnal NO_x accumulation, convective turbulence, air chemistry and photolysis rates. The results were evaluated with a turbulence resolving transport (DALES), a regional scale (WRF-Chem) and a global (EMAC) atmospheric chemistry model.

Project description:Toluene, a prominent member of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), exerts a substantial adverse influence on both human life and the environment. In the context of advanced oxidation processes, the ·OH radical emerges as a highly efficient oxidant, pivotal in the elimination of VOCs. This study employs computational quantum chemistry methods (G4MP2//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)) to systematically investigate the degradation of toluene by ·OH radicals in an implicit solvent model, and validates the rationale of choosing a single-reference method using T1 diagnostics. Our results suggest three possible reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of toluene by ·OH: firstly, the phenyl ring undergoes a hydrogen abstraction reaction followed by direct combination with ·OH to form cresol; secondly, ·OH directly adds to the phenyl ring, leading to ring opening; thirdly, oxidation of sidechain to benzoic acid followed by further addition and ring opening. The last two oxidation pathways involve the ring opening of toluene via the addition of ·OH, significantly facilitating the process. Therefore, both pathways are considered feasible for the degradation of toluene. Subsequently, the UV-H2O2 system was designed to induce the formation of ·OH for toluene degradation and to identify the optimal reaction conditions. It was demonstrated that ·OH and 1O2 are the primary active species for degrading toluene, with their contribution ranking as ·OH > 1O2. The intermediates in the mixture solution after reactions were characterized using GC-MS, demonstrating the validity of theoretical predictions. A comparative study of the toluene consumption rate revealed an experimental comprehensive activation energy of 10.33 kJ/mol, which is consistent with the preliminary activation energies obtained via theoretical analysis of these three mechanisms (0.56 kJ/mol to 13.66 kJ/mol), indicating that this theoretical method can provide a theoretical basis for experimental studies on the oxidation of toluene by ·OH.

Project description:We investigated the reactions of the hydroxyl radical (OH) with cyclopentenone derivatives and cyclopentanone in a quasi-static reaction cell at 4 Torr across a 300-500 K temperature range. The OH radicals were generated using pulsed laser photolysis of hydrogen peroxide vapors, and the ketone reactants were introduced in excess. The relative concentrations of the radicals were monitored as a function of reaction time using laser-induced fluorescence. At room temperature, the reaction rate coefficients were measured to be 1.2(±0.1) × 10-11 cm3 s-1 for reaction with 2-cyclopenten-1-one (R1); 1.7(±0.2) × 10-11 cm3 s-1 for reaction with 2-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (R2); and 4.4(±0. 7) × 10-12 cm3 s-1 for reaction with 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (R3). Over the experimental temperature range, the rate coefficients can be fitted with the modified Arrhenius expressions k1(T) = 1.2 × 10-11 (T/300)0.26 exp (6.7 kJ mol-1/R {1/T - 1/300}) cm3 s-1, k2(T) = 1.7 × 10-11 (T/300)6.4 exp (27.6 kJ mol-1/R {1/T - 1/300}) cm3 s-1, k3(T) = 4.4 × 10-12 (T/300)17.8 exp (57.8 kJ mol-1/R {1/T - 1/300}) cm3 s-1. In the cases of 2-cyclopenten-1-one and 2-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one, the temperature dependence of the rate coefficients is similar to that calculated or measured for noncyclic conjugated ketones. We also found that the reaction with 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one was slower, with rate coefficients similar to those measured for the reaction with the saturated cyclic ketone cyclopentanone. To discuss the experimental data, we use potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/6-311+G** level of theory. RRKM-based Master equation calculations were also performed to infer the most likely reaction products over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. We suggest that both abstraction and addition mechanisms contribute to the overall OH removal, forming radical products stabilized by resonance. We also discuss the relevance for combustion and atmospheric chemistry.
