Self-potential dataset for mapping groundwater flow patterns in the Chaine des Puys (Auvergne, France).

ABSTRACT: The present Self-Potential (SP) dataset acquired in the Chaîne des Puys is the result of four decades of measurements carried out by master's students, PhD students, researchers, and engineering offices under the auspices of the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (LMV) and the Observatoire de Physique du Globe de Clermont-Ferrand (OPGC). Acquired in the 1980s by Maurice Aubert and his collaborators (e.g. [1], [2], [3]), this Self-Potential dataset was completed as part of the CAPRICE project focused on the hydrosystem of the Chaîne des Puys. The methodology and equipment used for data acquisition has remained unchanged since the first measurement in 1987. As a result, this dataset compiles more than 20,000 SP measurements and covers an area of almost 200 km². The SP data are intended to serve as the basis for geological models, coupled with geological and other geophysical data, according to the method described in Aubert and Atangana, 1996. After interpolation, SP data can be used to identify preferential groundwater flow paths and to delineate the surface of hydrogeological watersheds. As indicated in the literature, they also be used to identify possible recharge zones or areas of permeability contrast.

Project description:Shallow groundwater (GW), defined as the water table of unconfined or perched aquifers that is near enough to the land surface to influence the vadose zone and the surface soil moisture, impacts land surface water, energy, and carbon cycles by providing additional moisture to the root zone via capillary fluxes. Although the interactions of shallow GW and the terrestrial land surface are widely recognized, incorporating shallow GW into the land surface, climate, and agroecosystem models is not yet possible due to the lack of groundwater data. Groundwater systems are affected by various factors, including climate, land use/land cover, ecosystems, GW extractions, and lithology. Although GW wells are the most direct and accurate way of monitoring water table depths at point scales, upscaling GW levels from point scale to areal or regional scale poses significant challenges. Here, we provide high spatiotemporal resolution global maps of the terrestrial land surface areas influenced by shallow GW from mid-2015 to 2021 (a separate NetCDF file for each year) in a 9 km spatial and daily temporal resolution. We derived this data from NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission spaceborne soil moisture observations with a temporal resolution of 3 days and approximately 9 km grid resolution. This spatial scale corresponds to SMAP's "Equal Area Scalable Earth" (EASE) grids. The central assumption is that the monthly moving average of soil moisture observations and their coefficient of variation are sensitive to shallow GW regardless of the prevailing climate. We process the Level-2 enhanced passive soil moisture SMAP (SPL2SMP_E) product to detect shallow GW signals. The presence of shallow GW data is calculated by an ensemble machine learning model, which is trained using simulations from a variably saturated soil moisture flow model (Hydrus-1D). The simulations span various climates, soil textures, and lower boundary conditions. The spatiotemporal distribution of shallow GW data based on SMAP soil moisture observations is provided for the first time with this dataset. The data are of value in a wide variety of applications. The most direct use is in climate and land surface models as lower boundary conditions or as a diagnostic tool to verify model results. Some other applications may include flood risk analyses and regulation, identifying geotechnical issues such as shallow GW-triggered liquefaction, global food security, ecosystem services, watershed management, crop yield, vegetation health, water storage trends, and tracking mosquito-borne diseases by identifying wetlands, among other applications.

Project description:BackgroundMost groundwater conservation and management efforts focus on protecting groundwater for drinking water and for other human uses with little understanding or focus on the ecosystems that depend on groundwater. However, groundwater plays an integral role in sustaining certain types of aquatic, terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, and their associated landscapes. Our aim was to illuminate the connection between groundwater and surface ecosystems by identifying and mapping the distribution of groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) in California.Methodology/principal findingsTo locate where groundwater flow sustains ecosystems we identified and mapped groundwater dependent ecosystems using a GIS. We developed an index of groundwater dependency by analyzing geospatial data for three ecosystem types that depend on groundwater: (1) springs and seeps; (2) wetlands and associated vegetation alliances; and (3) stream discharge from groundwater sources (baseflow index). Each variable was summarized at the scale of a small watershed (Hydrologic Unit Code-12; mean size = 9,570 ha; n = 4,621), and then stratified and summarized to 10 regions of relative homogeneity in terms of hydrologic, ecologic and climatic conditions. We found that groundwater dependent ecosystems are widely, although unevenly, distributed across California. Although different types of GDEs are clustered more densely in certain areas of the state, watersheds with multiple types of GDEs are found in both humid (e.g. coastal) and more arid regions. Springs are most densely concentrated in the North Coast and North Lahontan, whereas groundwater dependent wetlands and associated vegetation alliances are concentrated in the North and South Lahontan and Sacramento River hydrologic regions. The percentage of land area where stream discharge is most dependent on groundwater is found in the North Coast, Sacramento River and Tulare Lake regions. GDE clusters are located at the highest percentage in the North Coast (an area of the highest annual rainfall totals), North Lahontan (an arid, high desert climate with low annual rainfall), and Sacramento River hydrologic regions. That GDEs occur in such distinct climatic and hydrologic settings reveals the widespread distribution of these ecosystems.Conclusions/significanceProtection and management of groundwater-dependent ecosystems are hindered by lack of information on their diversity, abundance and location. By developing a methodology that uses existing datasets to locate GDEs, this assessment addresses that knowledge gap. We report here on the application of this method across California, but believe the method can be expanded to regions where spatial data exist.
