Erythrina L. (Phaseoleae, Papilionoideae, Leguminosae) of Brazil: an updated nomenclatural treatment with notes on etymology and vernacular names.

ABSTRACT: Erythrina L. is a genus that comprises ca. 120 to 130 species distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics of the world. Linnaeus established the genus in Genera Plantarum (1737) and the first binomial name given to a Brazilian Erythrina was E.crista-galli L., described by himself in Mantissa Plantarum (1767). Vellozo proposed in Florae Fluminensis (1790-1881) the first treatment of the genus in Brazil, where he treated three species from the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Martins and Tozzi proposed the most recent treatment in 2018, where the authors recognized 11 valid names and presented three new synonyms. Despite extensive efforts already made in the genus, previous works did not treat all names related to the valid ones for Brazilian Erythrina. The present work is the most comprehensive and up-to-date nomenclatural treatment for the genus in Brazil, covering all 84 related names found on digital nomenclatural databases. Here we analyze 64 protologues, update typification statuses, propose five new synonyms, 13 new lectotypes (11 first-step, two second-step) and one neotype, linking all protologues and type specimens with their corresponding available digital sources, and make additional notes on etymology and vernacular names.

Project description:As a service to taxonomists and ecologists using names in the well-known and species-rich ship-fouling serpulid genus Hydroides we present an update of all 107 non-synonymised scientific names, with additional information on Hydroides nomenclature, original names, etymologies, and type localities derived from original literature, and in accord with the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) database. An update is needed because the gender of genus Hydroides has from 1 January 2000 reverted to the original feminine, due to a change in the wording of International Code of Zoological Nomenclature which was overlooked at that time, and is contrary to the usage in practice of Hydroides as masculine which had started about 1992, although Code-required from the 1960s. We match 31 further original names of current WoRMS subjective junior synonyms to each non-synonymised name, and also report on the world distribution of the genus as illustrated by type localities of the valid names. We include notes on seven species inquirenda. The correct rendering is given of six names that have been altered for gender agreement for the first time herein. Hydroides gottfriedinom. n. replaces junior homonym Hydroides rostrata Pillai, 1971. Currently there are 41 non-synonymised species-group names in Hydroides which should be gender invariant, and 23 names which would only change if moved to a neuter genus; the remaining 43 names are fully gender variable. Place-names (23), and personal names (16) make up more than a third (36%) of the species names, with most of the remainder (68) being descriptive of species character states, usually of operculum morphology (54). All species, except Hydroides norvegica (63°N), have type localities in shallow-water coastal locations in temperate to tropical waters below latitude 44°, with the highest number of new species (54) from the adjoining Western Pacific and Indian Ocean areas. The other concentration of new species (31) are those first found on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America and in the Caribbean.

Project description:BackgroundIt is well known that butterflies are valuable indicators of environmental quality, given their existence in various habitats. Collecting and regularly updating data on species richness, abundance, and distribution of all butterfly species in the country is crucial for effective monitoring and conservation efforts, which can ultimately help minimise biodiversity losses. Since the last publication of the Georgian butterfly list, there have been numerous reports registering taxonomic revisions, nomenclatural changes or providing several new butterfly "cryptic species" based on genetic research. In the following article, based on a review of various sources of data, including existing literature and new, unpublished data, we present an annotated regional checklist of butterflies of Georgia, a country that is a part of the Caucasus ecoregion representing one of 36 biodiversity "hotspots".MethodsA database with all reported species for Georgia was created by compiling information from critical reviews of all available literature reports, records submitted by contributors of three websites dedicated to butterfly fauna, and data deposited in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) database. Various specialised sources were used to extract vernacular species names (Georgian, Russian and English).ResultsThe updated list of butterflies from Georgia includes 244 species of the superfamily Papilionoidea recorded from almost 600 different locations. Nearly 25% of the 244 species were considered rare and extremely rare, while at the same time being at risk of potential extinction. For each species, we present brief phenological information, distribution in Georgia/Caucasus, occurrence status in each region of the country, thumbnails (ventral and dorsal view), as well as a list of vernacular names in Georgian, Russian and English. Regarding species that are reported in the literature as new, uncertain, or questionable in Georgia, we provide the relevant comments. In comparison to the other republics of Transcaucasia (Armenia, Azerbaijan), we noted a similar number of species. Our studies provide a robust baseline of data for further exploration of the Lepidoptera fauna of Georgia. This foundation should help to fill in the gaps in knowledge regarding regional species distribution, phenology, and habitat requirements.

Project description:Background and aimsSpecies of the genus Burkholderia, from the Betaproteobacteria, have been isolated from legume nodules, but so far they have only been shown to form symbioses with species of Mimosa, sub-family Mimosoideae. This work investigates whether Burkholderia tuberum strains STM678 (isolated from Aspalathus carnosa) and DUS833 (from Aspalathus callosa) can nodulate species of the South African endemic papilionoid genera Cyclopia (tribe Podalyrieae) and Aspalathus (Crotalarieae) as well as the promiscuous legume Macroptilium atropurpureum (Phaseoleae).MethodsBacterial strains and the phylogeny of their symbiosis-related (nod) genes were examined via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Seedlings were grown in liquid culture and inoculated with one of the two strains of B. tuberum or with Sinorhizobium strain NGR 234 (from Lablab purpureus), Mesorhizobium strain DUS835 (from Aspalathus linearis) or Methylobacterium nodulans (from Crotalaria podocarpa). Some nodules, inoculated with green fluorescence protein (GFP)-tagged strains, were examined by light and electron microscopy coupled with immunogold labelling with a Burkholderia-specific antibody. The presence of active nitrogenase was checked by immunolabelling of nitrogenase and by the acetylene reduction assay. B. tuberum STM678 was also tested on a wide range of legumes from all three sub-families.Key resultsNodules were not formed on any of the Aspalathus spp. Only B. tuberum nodulated Cyclopia falcata, C. galioides, C. genistoides, C. intermedia and C. pubescens. It also effectively nodulated M. atropurpureum but no other species tested. GFP-expressing inoculant strains were located inside infected cells of C. genistoides, and bacteroids in both Cyclopia spp. and M. atropurpureum were immunogold-labelled with antibodies against Burkholderia and nitrogenase. Nitrogenase activity was also shown using the acetylene reduction assay. This is the first demonstration that a beta-rhizobial strain can effectively nodulate papilioinoid legumes.ConclusionsPapilionoid legumes from widely different tribes can be nodulated by beta-rhizobia, forming both indeterminate (Cyclopia) and determinate (Macroptilium) nodules.
