Vigilance behaviour during the calving season in female Tibetan antelopes (Pantholopshodgsonii).

ABSTRACT: Tibetan antelopes (Pantholopshodgsonii) migrate great distances to specific delivery and calving areas. In the current study, we investigated calving site selection and vigilance behaviour during delivery and nursing in migratory female Tibetan antelopes at Zonag Lake. According to observations and analysis, the females were distributed south of Zonag Lake, where vegetation was abundant. We determined their dates of migration (crossing the Qinghai-Tibet Highway observation site), showing a shift of one month during the period from June in 2008 to May 2021. Results also showed that 81.4% of females expressed high vigilance behaviour during calving and nursing compared to those without calves (7.1%). From delivery until calf standing, females were highly vigilant and spent considerable time scanning, with 96% of females showing vigilance behaviour. Females with calves (average 9.94 ± 0.62 s) spent more time on vigilance behaviour than females without calves (average 6.25 ± 1.38 s). Females with newborns spent the greatest amount of time being vigilant (average 51.63 ± 4.24 s). These results not only identify basic Tibetan antelope calving behaviour, but also provide scientific analysis and evidence for further ethological research on female Tibetan antelopes.

Project description:Management of large herbivores depends on providing habitats for forage supply and refuge from risks of temperature, predation and disease. Moose (Alces alces) accumulate body energy and nutrient stores during summer, while reducing the impact of warm temperatures through physiological and behavioural thermoregulation. Building on the animal indicator concept, we used rumen temperature sensors and GPS collars on captive moose (n = 6) kept in large natural enclosures to evaluate how behaviour and habitat selection influence the rate of change in rumen temperature during the growing season on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA. We compared movement and habitat selection of individual females during tolerance days (daily amplitude in rumen temperature was ≥1.2°C in 24 h) with those of control days (daily amplitude in rumen temperature was < 1.2°C) before and after the tolerance day. Moose moved more during tolerance days (172 m • h-1; 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 149-191 m • h-1) than on control days (151 m • h-1; 95% CI = 128-173 m • h-1). The rate of change in rumen temperature (°C • h-1) declined with low to moderate movement rates that were probably associated with foraging in all habitats. Movement only increased the rate of change in rumen temperature at high activity (~ > 500 m • h-1). Additionally, the relationship between rate of change in rumen temperature and movement rate was different during tolerance and control days in open meadow and wetland habitats. In all habitats except wetlands, the rate of change in rumen temperature increased while resting, which probably is a result of diet-induced thermogenesis. Our study demonstrates that the behavioural choices of moose on the landscape are associated with the rate of change in rumen temperature and their ability to thermoregulate. Wildlife managers must consider high-value habitats where wildlife can employ both behavioural and physiological mechanisms to tolerate warm ambient conditions in a landscape of forage, predators and pests.

Project description:Cryptosporidium parvum is a causative agent of cryptosporidiosis, an infectious gastroenteritis in neonatal ruminants, which can be fatal in severe cases. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of infections in dairy cattle/calves during the early stages of a calving season and the species/genotypes of the Cryptosporidium present. Faecal samples collected from pre- and post-partum dams (n = 224) as well as calves from age ∼1 day onwards (n = 312) were examined. Oocysts were concentrated, DNA extracted and tested by Cryptosporidium 18S rRNA gene PCR and sequencing, while genotypes of C. parvum were determined by gp60 and VNTR analysis. Results showed that 31.3% and 30.4% of pre- and post-partum dams tested positive for Cryptosporidium, respectively. In the adults, C. parvum (n = 52), C. bovis (n = 4) and C. andersoni (n = 19) were identified, while in the calves 248 out of 312 (79.5%) were PCR-positive for C. parvum. The proportion of positive calf samples was significantly higher (P < 0.0001) than the proportion of positive adult cattle during the first seven weeks of the calving season. In adult cattle, three distinct gp60 genotypes were identified, a predominant genotype IIaA15G2R1 (n = 36) and genotypes IIaA15R1 (n = 2) and IIaA14G2R1 (n = 1). In the calves, only genotype IIaA15G2R1 was detected (n = 125). Although C. parvum was observed in adult cattle two weeks after the start of the calving season, the predominant genotypes were not detected until Week 4 in both adults and calves, meaning it is still unclear whether adult cattle are the initial source of C. parvum infections on the farm. Historically calves on this dairy farm demonstrated the IIaA19G2R1 genotype, which, has now clearly been replaced with the IIaA15G2R1 genotype that is now found in both adults and calves. During the study season, significantly higher levels of neonatal calf mortality were observed compared to the seasons before (P = 0.046) and after (P = 0.0002). This study has shown comparable levels of C. parvum infection in both pre- and post-partum dams but higher levels of infection in neonatal calves.

Project description:BackgroundAgricultural workers have a higher incidence of osteoarthritis (OA), but the etiology behind this phenomenon is unclear. Calving season, which occurs in mid- to late-winter for ranchers, includes physical conditions that may elevate OA risk. Our primary aim was to determine whether OA biomarkers are elevated at the peak of calving season compared to pre-season, and to compare these data with joint health survey information from the subjects. Our secondary aim was to detect biomarker differences between male and female ranchers.MethodsDuring collection periods before and during calving season, male (n = 28) and female (n = 10) ranchers completed joint health surveys and provided samples of blood, urine, and saliva for biomarker analysis. Statistical analyses examined associations between mean biomarker levels and survey predictors. Ensemble cluster analysis identified groups having unique biomarker profiles.ResultsThe number of calvings performed by each rancher positively correlated with plasma IL-6, serum hyaluronic acid (HA) and urinary CTX-I. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), a marker of oxidative stress, was significantly higher during calving season than pre-season and was also correlated with ranchers having more months per year of joint pain. We found evidence of sexual dimorphism in the biomarkers among the ranchers, with leptin being elevated and matrix metalloproteinase-3 diminished in female ranchers. The opposite was detected in males. WOMAC score was positively associated with multiple biomarkers: IL-6, IL-2, HA, leptin, C2C, asymmetric dimethylarginine, and CTX-I. These biomarkers represent enzymatic degradation, inflammation, products of joint destruction, and OA severity.ConclusionsThe positive association between number of calvings performed by each rancher (workload) and both inflammatory and joint tissue catabolism biomarkers establishes that calving season is a risk factor for OA in Montana ranchers. Consistent with the literature, we found important sex differences in OA biomarkers, with female ranchers showing elevated leptin, whereas males showed elevated MMP-3.

Project description:Livestock on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau are faced with extreme harsh winters and are often in negative energy balance during this period. Dietary supplementation can improve growth performance of Tibetan sheep and, consequently, we hypothesized that it would also increase microbial abundance and rumen epithelium development. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effect of feed supplementation during the cold season on rumen microbes, fermentation, epithelium development, and absorptive capability in Tibetan sheep. Eighteen 1-yr-old ewes (BW = 29.4 ± 1.79, kg) were offered oat hay ad libitum for 60 d and divided randomly into three groups: 1) no supplement; control group (CON); 2) urea-molasses lick block supplement (BS); and 3) concentrate feed supplement (CS). The ADG of CS ewes (143.3, g/d) was greater (P < 0.05) than BS ewes (87.9, g/d), which was greater (P < 0.05) than CON ewes (44.5, g/d). Serum concentrations of GH, IGF-1, and IGF-2 in the CS and BS groups were greater than in the CON group (P < 0.05). Greater relative abundance of protozoa, Ruminococcus albus, Fibrobacter succinogenes, Streptococcus bovis, and Ruminobacter amylophilus was observed in the CS and BS groups than in the CON group (P < 0.05), and relative abundances of rumen fungi, Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, and Prevotella ruminicola in the CS group were greater than in the BS and CON groups (P < 0.05). Ruminal total VFA, ammonia, and microbial protein concentrations in the CS and BS groups were greater than in the CON group (P < 0.05), and in the CS group were greater than in the BS group (P < 0.05). Ruminal papillae width and surface area in the CS and BS groups were greater than in the CON group (P < 0.05), while in the CS group were greater than in the BS group (P < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of IGFBP5, NHE1 (sodium/hydrogen antiporter, isoform 1), DRA (downregulated in adenoma), and Na+/K+-ATPase (sodium/potassium ATPase pump) in ruminal epithelium were greater in the CS and BS groups than in the CON group (P < 0.05), and in the CS group was greater than in the BS group (P < 0.05), while NHE3 (sodium/hydrogen antiporter, isoform 3), MCT1 (monocarboxylate transporter 1), and MCT4 (monocarboxylate transporter 4) mRNA expressions in the CS group were greater than in the BS and CON groups (P < 0.05). It was concluded that supplementing Tibetan sheep during the cold season increases rumen microbial abundance and improves fermentation parameters, rumen epithelium development, and absorptive capability.
