Wikipedia as a tool for contemporary history of science: A case study on CRISPR.

ABSTRACT: Rapid developments and methodological divides hinder the study of how scientific knowledge accumulates, consolidates and transfers to the public sphere. Our work proposes using Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, as a historiographical source for contemporary science. We chose the high-profile field of gene editing as our test case, performing a historical analysis of the English-language Wikipedia articles on CRISPR. Using a mixed-method approach, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed the CRISPR article's text, sections and references, alongside 50 affiliated articles. These, we found, documented the CRISPR field's maturation from a fundamental scientific discovery to a biotechnological revolution with vast social and cultural implications. We developed automated tools to support such research and demonstrated its applicability to two other scientific fields-coronavirus and circadian clocks. Our method utilizes Wikipedia as a digital and free archive, showing it can document the incremental growth of knowledge and the manner scientific research accumulates and translates into public discourse. Using Wikipedia in this manner compliments and overcomes some issues with contemporary histories and can also augment existing bibliometric research.

Project description:IntroductionTeaching medication history taking or medication reconciliation to students requires practice for students to achieve competency. Practice makes students more confident with the process, but multiple practice opportunities require multiple cases, and creating these new cases can be a tedious and time-consuming process.MethodsThe Medication Mysteries Infinite Case Tool was designed to produce random patient cases using game-like features to allow students to practice medication history taking and medication reconciliation without the need to use and train standardized patients. The tool was created using a random draw card-based system to determine patient personality attributes, drugs they are taking, and confusions they have about their drug-taking behavior. This tool is used in a lab dedicated for the purpose of practicing medication history taking with students being assessed via simulation with standardized patients. This tool is currently used at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy as part of a training program for first-year pharmacy students.ResultsSince 2011, seven classes of first- and second-year pharmacy students have participated in this lab. Each year's class contained an average of 280 students divided into lab groups of 18-24 students. In our initial offering of the lab and assessment, 200 students on three campuses completed the individual assessments following the laboratory session. Fifty-eight percent achieved excellence, and 39% achieved competence on the individual assessment. Only 3% were assessed as being deficient on their performance and were required to repeat the assessment. Overall, 86.8% agreed or strongly agreed that the MMICT was an excellent way to experience how to reconcile medication.DiscussionStudents enjoy the practice and become proficient with the skills they learn through this process as evidenced by increased self-efficacy and achieved competence on a standardized assessment. The tool and the research associated with the outcome were awarded with the 2012 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Innovations in Teaching Award.

Project description:Amphibians, the most threatened group of vertebrates, are seen as indicators of the sixth mass extinction on earth. Thousands of species are threatened with extinction and many have been affected by an emerging infectious disease, chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). However, amphibians exhibit different responses to the pathogen, such as survival and population persistence with infection, or mortality of individuals and complete population collapse after pathogen invasion. Multiple factors can affect host pathogen dynamics, yet few studies have provided a temporal view that encompasses both the epizootic phase (i.e. pathogen invasion and host collapse), and the transition to a more stable co-existence (i.e. recovery of infected host populations). In the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, USA, conspecific populations of frogs currently exhibit dramatically different host/ Bd-pathogen dynamics. To provide a temporal context by which present day dynamics may be better understood, we use a Bd qPCR assay to test 1165 amphibian specimens collected between 1900 and 2005. Our historical analyses reveal a pattern of pathogen invasion and eventual spread across the Sierra Nevada over the last century. Although we found a small number of Bd-infections prior to 1970, these showed no sign of spread or increase in infection prevalence over multiple decades. After the late 1970s, when mass die offs were first noted, our data show Bd as much more prevalent and more spatially spread out, suggesting epizootic spread. However, across the ~400km2 area, we found no evidence of a wave-like pattern, but instead discovered multiple, nearly-simultaneous invasions within regions. We found that Bd invaded and spread in the central Sierra Nevada (Yosemite National Park area) about four decades before it invaded and spread in the southern Sierra Nevada (Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks area), and suggest that the temporal pattern of pathogen invasion may help explain divergent contemporary host pathogen dynamics.
