Project description:ABSTRACT Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a representative of per/polyfluorinated alkyl substances, has become a persistent water pollutant of widespread concern due to its biological toxicity and refractory property. In this work, we design and synthesize two porous aromatic frameworks (PAF) of PAF-CF3 and PAF-C2F5 using fluorine-containing alkyl based monomers in tetrahedral geometry. Both PAFs exhibit nanosized pores (∼1.0 nm) of high surface areas (over 800 m2 g−1) and good fluorophilicity. Remarkable adsorption capacity (˃740 mg g−1) and superior efficiency (˃24 g mg−1 h−1) are achieved toward the removal of PFOA with 1 μg L−1 concentration owing to unique C–F···F–C interactions. In particular, PAF-CF3 and PAF-C2F5 are able to reduce the PFOA concentration in water to 37.9 ng L−1 and 43.3 ng L−1, below EPA regulations (70 ng L−1). The reusability and high efficiency give both PAFs a great potential for sewage treatment. Two porous aromatic frameworks containing perfluoroalkyl groups are designed and successfully synthesized with good fluorophilicity and high porosity. They efficiently remove PFOA below regulation limit, candidating them for water purification.

Project description:Porous structures offer highly accessible surfaces and rich pores, which facilitate the exposure of numerous active sites for photocatalytic reactions, leading to excellent performances. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered ideal precursors for well-designed semiconductors with porous structures and/or heterostructures, which have shown enhanced photocatalytic activities. In this review, we summarize the recent development of porous structures, such as metal oxides and metal sulfides, and their heterostructures, derived from MOF-based materials as catalysts for various light-driven energy-/environment-related reactions, including water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic redox reaction, and pollution degradation. A summary and outlook section is also included.

Project description:Mn(diimine)(CO)3X (X = halide) complexes are critical components of chromophores, photo- and electrocatalysts, and photoactive CO-releasing molecules (photoCORMs). While these entities have been incorporated into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a detailed understanding of the photochemical and chemical processes that occur in a permanently porous support is lacking. Here we site-isolate and study the photochemistry of a Mn(diimine)(CO)3Br moiety anchored within a permanently porous MOF support, allowing for not only the photo-liberation of CO from the metal but also its escape from the MOF crystals. In addition, the high crystallinity and structural flexibility of the MOF allows crystallographic snapshots of the photolysis products to be obtained. We report these photo-crystallographic studies in the presence of coordinating solvents, THF and acetonitrile, showing the changing coordination environment of the Mn species as CO loss proceeds. Using time resolved experiments, we report complementary spectroscopic studies of the photolysis chemistry and characterize the final photolysis product as a possible Mn(ii) entity. These studies inform the chemistry that occurs in MOF-based photoCORMs and where these moieties are employed as catalysts.

Project description:Porous materials have many applications, such as energy storage, as catalysts and adsorption etc. Nevertheless, facile synthesis of porous materials remains a challenge. In this work, porous lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) is fabricated directly from Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, ZIF-67) and lithium salt via a facile solid state annealing approach. The temperature affect on the microstructure of LiCoO2 is also investigated. The as-prepared LiCoO2 shows a uniform porous structure. As a cathode for a lithium-ion battery (LIB), the LiCoO2 delivers excellent stability and superior rate capability. The as-prepared porous LiCoO2 delivers a reversible capacity of 106.5 mA h g-1 at 2C and with stable capacity retention of 96.4% even after 100 cycles. This work may provide an alternative pathway for the preparation of porous materials with broader applications.

Project description:The construction of microbial cell factories for sustainable production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals requires extensive genome engineering. Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, this study proposes synthetic neochromosomes as orthogonal expression platforms for rewiring native cellular processes and implementing new functionalities. Capitalizing the powerful homologous recombination capability of S. cerevisiae, modular neochromosomes of 50 and 100 kb were fully assembled de novo from up to 44 transcriptional-unit-sized fragments in a single transformation. These assemblies were remarkably efficient and faithful to their in silico design. Neochromosomes made of non-coding DNA were stably replicated and segregated irrespective of their size without affecting the physiology of their host. These non-coding neochromosomes were successfully used as landing pad and as exclusive expression platform for the essential glycolytic pathway. This work pushes the limit of DNA assembly in S. cerevisiae and paves the way for de novo designer chromosomes as modular genome engineering platforms in S. cerevisiae.

Project description:Bioapplication is an emerging field of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) utilization, but biocompatible MOFs with permanent porosity are still a rarity in the field. In addition, biocompatibility of MOF constituents is often overlooked when designing bioMOF systems, intended for drug delivery. Herein, we present the a Zn(II) bioMOF based on vitamin C as an independent ligand (bioNICS-1) forming a three-dimensional chiral framework with permanent microporosity. Comprehensive study of structure stability in biorelavant media in static and dynamic conditions demonstrates relatively high structure resistivity, retaining a high degree of its parent specific surface area. Robustness of the 3D framework enables a slow degradation process, resulting in controllable release of bioactive components, as confirmed by kinetic studies. BioNICS-1 can thus be considered as a suitable candidate for the design of a small drug molecule delivery system, which was demonstrated by successful loading and release of urea-a model drug for topical application-within and from the MOF pores.

Project description:Efficient separation of bioactive compounds from nature source, particularly that of astaxanthin (AXT), remains challenging due to their low content in complicated matrix and readily degradable structure. Herein, a modulator-induced defect engineering is presented on the stable zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) to optimize pore size and pore chemistry for the efficient separation and purification of AXT for the first time. High adsorption capacity of 26.21 mg g-1 is achieved on the best-performing defect Zr-MOF (d-UiO-67-4), superior over the other reported adsorbent for AXT. Meanwhile, d-UiO-67-4 exhibits the selective adsorption of AXT over other carotenoids analogues with similar structure and properties. This is attributed to the preferential non-covalent interactions between defect framework and AXT revealed by the spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. High purity of AXT with 89.0% ± 2.3% extraction efficiency can be realized after the purification of AXT by d-UiO-67-4. The practical separation performance of d-UiO-67-4 for AXT extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis is demonstrated by fixed-bed column-based dynamic adsorption and desorption experiments. This work broadens the preparation methods for thermosensitive active substances and provided new research ideas for the controlled adsorption of functional food factors.

Project description:The growing interest in two-dimensional imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is inspired by their crystalline porous structures and the potential for extensive π-electron delocalization. The intrinsic reversibility and strong polarization of imine linkages, however, leads to insufficient chemical stability and optoelectronic properties. Developing COFs with improved robustness and π-delocalization is highly desirable but remains an unsettled challenge. Here we report a facile strategy that transforms imine-linked COFs into ultrastable porous aromatic frameworks by kinetically fixing the reversible imine linkage via an aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. The as-formed, quinoline-linked COFs not only retain crystallinity and porosity, but also display dramatically enhanced chemical stability over their imine-based COF precursors, rendering them among the most robust COFs up-to-date that can withstand strong acidic, basic and redox environment. Owing to the chemical diversity of the cycloaddition reaction and structural tunability of COFs, the pores of COFs can be readily engineered to realize pre-designed surface functionality.
