The photophysical properties of these molecules in deoxygenated cyclohexane, including their absorption spectra, steady-state photoluminescence and excitation spectra, and phosphorescence lifetimes, are presented. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations were carried out to better understand the electronic excited states of these benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazoles and why they are capable of phosphorescence.

Project description:The host-guest doping system has aroused great attention due to its promising advantage in stimulating bright and persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Currently, exploration of the explicit structure-property relationship of bicomponent systems has encountered obstacles. In this work, two sets of heterocyclic isomers showing promising RTP emissions in the solid state were designed and synthesized. By encapsulating these phosphors into a robust phosphorus-containing host, several host-guest cocrystalline systems were further developed, achieving highly efficient RTP performance with a phosphorescence quantum efficiency (ϕ P) of ∼26% and lifetime (τ P) of ∼32 ms. Detailed photophysical characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were conducted to reveal the structure-property relationships in such bicomponent systems. It was verified that other than restricting the molecular configuration, the host matrix could also dilute the guest to avoid concentration quenching and provide an external heavy atom effect for the population of triplet excitons, thus boosting the RTP performance of the guest.

Project description:Sustainable photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials exhibit great potential but are difficult to obtain. Here, we develop photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials by covalently attaching lignin to polylactic acid, where lignin and polylactic acid are the chromophore and matrix, respectively. Initially the phosphorescence of the lignin is quenched by residual O2. However, the phosphorescence is switched on when the residual oxygen is consumed by the triplet excitons of lignin under continuous UV light irradiation. As such, the lifetime increases from 3.0 ms to 221.1 ms after 20 s of UV activation. Interestingly, the phosphorescence is quenched again after being kept under an atmosphere of air for 2 h in the absence of UV irradiation due to the diffusion of oxygen into the materials. Using these properties, as-developed material is successfully used as a smart anti-counterfeiting logo for a medicine bottle and for information recording.

Project description:Aqueous room temperature phosphorescence (aRTP) from purely organic materials has been intriguing but challenging. In this article, we demonstrated that the red aRTP emission of 2Br-NDI, a water-soluble 4,9-dibromonaphthalene diimide derivative as a chloride salt, could be modulated by anion-π and intermolecular electronic coupling interactions in water. Specifically, the rarely reported stabilization of anion-π interactions in water between Cl- and the 2Br-NDI core was experimentally evidenced by an anion-π induced long-lived emission (λ Anion-π) of 2Br-NDI, acting as a competitive decay pathway against the intrinsic red aRTP emission (λ Phos) of 2Br-NDI. In the initial expectation of enhancing the aRTP of 2Br-NDI by inclusion complexation with macrocyclic cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s, n = 7, 8, 10), we surprisingly found that the exclusion complexation between CB[8] and 2Br-NDI unconventionally endowed the complex with the strongest and longest-lived aRTP due to the strong intermolecular electronic coupling between the nπ* orbit on the carbonyl rims of CB[8] and the ππ* orbit on 2Br-NDI in water. It is anticipated that these intriguing findings may inspire and expand the exploration of aqueous anion-π recognition and CB[n]-based aRTP materials.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) with red-emitting room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are rarely reported because of the increasing nonradiative decay of the excited states and the decreasing energy gap between the excited states and ground states. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy for modulating the RTP properties of CDs in terms of donor-acceptor energy transfer (EnT) in the CDs-in-zeolite system. Upon tuning of the heteroatoms (Zn2+, Mn2+) doped in the aluminophosphate zeolite frameworks, CDs@zeolite composites with green and red phosphorescence have been prepared via in situ hydrothermal synthesis. In such composites, the zeolite matrix provides an efficient confinement role in stabilizing the triplet states of CDs. Significantly, the Mn-doped zeolite could act as an energy acceptor allowing EnT from excitons of CDs to the dopant in the host matrix, generating the intriguing red RTP behavior. This work provides an effective strategy for developing CD-based composite materials with special RTP emissions as well as new fields for applications.

Project description:Modulating the stimulus-responsiveness of a luminescent crystal is challenging owing to the complex interdependent nature of its controlling factors, such as molecular structure, molecular conformation, crystal packing, optical properties, and amorphization behavior. Herein, we demonstrate a halogen-exchange approach that disentangles this problem, thereby realizing the modulation of room-temperature phosphorescence-to-phosphorescence mechanochromism. Replacing the bromine atoms in a brominated thienyl diketone with chlorine atoms afforded isostructural crystals; i.e., molecules with different halogen atoms exhibited the same molecular conformation and crystal packing. Consequently, amorphization behavior toward mechanical stimulation was also the same, and the phosphorescence of amorphous states originated from the same conformer of each diketone. In contrast, the phosphorescence properties of each conformer were modulated differently, which is ascribable to heavy atom effects, resulting in the modulation of the mechanochromism. Thus, halogen exchange is a promising approach for modulating the stimulus-responsive photofunctions of crystals involving spin-forbidden processes.

Project description:Research on materials with pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their application as organic single-molecule white light emitters is a hot area and relies on the design of highly efficient pure organic RTP luminogens. Herein, a facile strategy of heavy-atom-participated anion-π+ interactions is proposed to construct RTP-active organic salt compounds (1,2,3,4-tetraphenyloxazoliums with different counterions). Those compounds with heavy-atom counterions (bromide and iodide ions) exhibit outstanding RTP due to the external heavy atom effect via anion-π+ interactions, evidently supported by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculation. Their single-molecule white light emission is realized by tuning the degree of crystallization. Such white light emission also performs well in polymer matrices and their use in 3D printing is demonstrated by white light lampshades.

Project description:Pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials become increasingly important in advanced optoelectronic and bioelectronic applications. Current phosphors based on small aromatic molecules show emission characteristics generally limited to short wavelengths. It remains an enormous challenge to achieve red and near-infrared (NIR) RTP, particularly for those from nonaromatics. Here we demonstrate that succinimide derived cyclic imides can emit RTP in the red (665, 690 nm) and NIR (745 nm) spectral range with high efficiencies of up to 9.2%. Despite their rather limited molecular conjugations, their unique emission stems from the presence of the imide unit and heavy atoms, effective molecular clustering, and the electron delocalization of halogens. We further demonstrate that the presence of heavy atoms like halogen or chalcogen atoms in these systems is important to facilitate intersystem crossing as well as to extend through-space conjugation and to enable rigidified conformations. This universal strategy paves the way to the design of nonconventional luminophores with long wavelength emission and for emerging applications.

Project description:Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have received considerable attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties. During the past decade, various organic luminogens exhibiting RTP emission in solid states were reported. However, the phosphorescence emission of organic compounds can hardly be observed in their solutions at room temperature. Herein, we reported two fluorene derivatives that can emit RTP in degassed organic solvents, polymer doped film, and crystalline states. Furthermore, those RTP luminogens emitted different colors with different phosphorescence lifetimes in multi-states. These results indicated that the phosphorescence performance can be adjusted flexibly in different condensed states. To our knowledge, this is the first example possessing diverse organic RTP at multi-states, including solution state.

Project description:Currently, organic phosphorescent particles are heavily used in sensing and imaging. Up to now, most of these particles contain poisonous and/or expensive metal complexes. Environmentally friendly systems are therefore highly desired. A purely amorphous system consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) particles with incorporated N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzidine emitter molecules is presented in this work. Single particles with sizes between 400 and 840 nm show-depending on the environment-bright fluorescence and phosphorescence. The latter is observed when oxygen is not in the proximity of the emitting dye molecules. These particles can scavenge singlet oxygen, which is produced during the photoexcitation process, by incorporating it into the polymer matrix. This renders their use to be unharmful for the surrounding matter with possible application in marking schemes for living bodies.
