Project description:Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) provide a means to formulate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into processable films that can help to advance their use in various applications. Conventional MMMs are inherently susceptible to craze or tear upon exposure to impact, cutting, bending, or stretching, which can limit their intended service life and usage. Herein, a simple, efficient, and scalable in situ fabrication approach was used to prepare self-healing MMMs containing Zr(iv)-based MOFs. The ability of these MMMs to self-heal at room temperature is based on the reversible hydrolysis of boronic-ester conjugates. Thiol-ene 'photo-click' polymerization yielded robust MMMs with ∼30 wt% MOF loading and mechanical strength that varied based on the size of MOF particles. The MMMs could undergo repeated self-healing with good retention of mechanical strength. In addition, the MMMs were catalytically active toward the degradation of the chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulant dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) with no change in activity after two damage-healing cycles.

Project description:The preparation of flawless and defect-free mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) comprising metal-organic framework (MOF) and polymer is often difficult owing to the poor MOF/polymer interface compatibility. Herein, we present the synthesis of an important family of pillared-layered MOFs with polymerizable moieties based on the parent structure [Zn2L2P]n [L = vinyl containing benzenedicarboxylic acid linkers; P = 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy)]. The crystalline structures of polymerizable MOFs were analyzed using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The presence of reactive double bonds in MOFs was verified by the successful thiol-ene click reaction with sulfhydryl compounds. The subsequent copolymerization of polymerizable MOFs with organic monomers produced mixed matrix membranes with enhanced MOF/polymer interfacial adhesion that enabled good separation efficiency of CO2 from flue gas. This strategy provides a stimulating platform to the preparation of highly efficient MMMs that are capable of mitigating energy consumption and environment issues.

Project description:The exploitation of high-performance membranes selective for propylene is important for developing energy-efficient propylene/propane (C3H6/C3H8) separation technologies. Although metal-organic frameworks with a molecular sieving property have been considered promising filler materials in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), their use in practical applications has been challenging due to a lack of interface compatibility. Herein, we adopted a surface coordination strategy that involved rationally utilizing carboxyl-functionalized PIM-1 (cPIM) and ZIF-8 to prepare a mixed-matrix membrane for efficient propylene/propane separation. The interfacial coordination between the polymer and the MOF improves their compatibility and eliminates the need for additional modification of the MOF, thereby maximizing the inherent screening performance of the MOF filler. Additionally, the utilization of porous PIM-1 guaranteed the high permeability of the MMMs. The obtained MMMs exhibited excellent separation performance. The 30 wt% ZIF-8/cPIM-1 membrane performed the best, exhibiting a high C3H6 permeability of 1023 Barrer with a moderate C3H6/C3H8 selectivity of 13.97 under 2 bars of pressure. This work presents a method that can feasibly be used for the preparation of defect-free MOF-based MMMs for specific gas separations.

Project description:Thin-film composite mixed-matrix membranes (TFC-MMMs) have potential applications in practical gas separation processes because of their high permeance (gas flux) and gas selectivity. In this study, we fabricated a high-performance TFC-MMM based on a rubbery comb copolymer, i.e., poly(2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl] ethyl methacrylate)-co-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (PBE), and metal-organic framework MOF-808 nanoparticles. The rubbery copolymer penetrates through the pores of MOF-808, thereby tuning the pore size. In addition, the rubbery copolymer forms a defect-free interfacial morphology with polymer-infiltrated MOF-808 nanoparticles. Consequently, TFC-MMMs (thickness = 350 nm) can be successfully prepared even with a high loading of MOF-808. As polymer-infiltrated MOF is incorporated into the polymer matrix, the PBE/MOF-808 membrane exhibits a significantly higher CO2 permeance (1069 GPU) and CO2/N2 selectivity (52.7) than that of the pristine PBE membrane (CO2 permeance = 431 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity = 36.2). Therefore, the approach considered in this study is suitable for fabricating high-performance thin-film composite membranes via polymer infiltration into MOF pores.

Project description:Recently, there has been an active search for new modifiers to create hybrid polymeric materials for various applications, in particular, membrane technology. One of the topical modifiers is metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which can significantly alter the characteristics of obtained mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, new holmium-based MOFs (Ho-MOFs) were synthesized for polyether block amide (PEBA) modification to develop novel MMMs with improved properties. The study of Ho-MOFs, polymers and membranes was carried out by methods of X-ray phase analysis, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, dynamic and kinematic viscosity, static and dynamic light scattering, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements. Synthesized Ho-MOFs had different X-ray structures, particle forms and sizes depending on the ligand used. To study the effect of Ho-MOF modifier on membrane transport properties, PEBA/Ho-MOFs membrane retention capacity was evaluated in vacuum fourth-stage filtration for dye removal (Congo Red, Fuchsin, Glycine thymol blue, Methylene blue, Eriochrome Black T). Modified membranes demonstrated improved flux and rejection coefficients for dyes containing amino groups: Congo Red, Fuchsin (PEBA/Ho-1,3,5-H3btc membrane possessed optimal properties: 81% and 68% rejection coefficients for Congo Red and Fuchsin filtration, respectively, and 0.7 L/(m2s) flux).

Project description:Gas separation membranes are one of the lowest energy technologies available for the separation of carbon dioxide from flue gas. Key to handling the immense scale of this separation is maximised membrane permeability at sufficient selectivity for CO2 over N2. For the first time it is revealed that metals can be post-synthetically exchanged in MOFs to drastically enhance gas transport performance in membranes. Ti-exchanged UiO-66 MOFs have been found to triple the gas permeability without a loss in selectivity due to several effects that include increased affinity for CO2 and stronger interactions between the polymer matrix and the Ti-MOFs. As a result, it is also shown that MOFs optimized in previous works for batch-wise adsorption applications can be applied to membranes, which have lower demands on material quantities. These membranes exhibit exceptional CO2 permeability enhancement of as much as 153% when compared to the non-exchanged UiO-66 mixed-matrix controls, which places them well above the Robeson upper bound at just a 5 wt.% loading. The fact that maximum permeability enhancement occurs at such low loadings, significantly less than the optimum for other MMMs, is a major advantage in large-scale application due to the more attainable quantities of MOF needed.

Project description:Nowadays, nanofiltration is actively used for water softening and disinfection, pre-treatment, nitrate, and color removal, in particular, for heavy metal ions removal from wastewater. In this regard, new, effective materials are required. In the present work, novel sustainable porous membranes from cellulose acetate (CA) and supported membranes consisting of CA porous substrate with a thin dense selective layer from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) modified with first-time synthesized Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (Zn(SEB), Zn(BDC)Si, Zn(BIM)) were developed to increase the efficiency of nanofiltration for the removal of heavy metal ions. Zn-based MOFs were characterized by sorption measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained membranes were studied by the spectroscopic (FTIR), standard porosimetry and microscopic (SEM and AFM) methods, and contact angle measurement. The CA porous support was compared with other, prepared in the present work, porous substrates from poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) and polyacrylonitrile. Membrane performance was tested in the nanofiltration of the model and real mixtures containing heavy metal ions. The improvement of the transport properties of the developed membranes was achieved through Zn-based MOF modification due to their porous structure, hydrophilic properties, and different particle shapes.

Project description:Polymeric membranes offer an appealing solution for sustainable CO2 capture, with potential for large-scale deployment. However, balancing high permeability and selectivity is an inherent challenge for pristine membranes. To address this challenge, the development of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is a promising strategy. MMMs are obtained by carefully integrating porous nano-fillers into polymeric matrices, enabling the simultaneous enhancement of selectivity and permeability. In particular, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained recognition as MMM fillers for CO2 capture. Here, a review of the current state, recent advancements, and challenges in the fabrication and engineering of MMMs with MOFs for selective CO2 capture is proposed. Key considerations and promising research directions to fully exploit the gas separation potential of MOF-based MMMs in CO2 capture applications are highlighted.

Project description:The metal-organic rotaxane framework (MORF) structures with the advantage of mechanically interlocking molecules (MIMs) have attracted intense interest from the chemical community. In this study, a set of MORFs (i.e., MORF-Pb-1 and MORF-Pb-2) are constructed using Pb2+, a tetraimidazolium macrocycle (Texas-sized molecular box; 14+), and aromatic dicarboxylate (p-phthalate dianions (PTADAs; 2) or 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate dianions (3)) via a one-pot three-layer diffusion protocol. In particular, an unusual Pb…Pb weak interaction was shown in MORF-Pb-1 (charactered with distance of 3.656 Å).

Project description:MOF-74 (metal-organic framework) is utilized as a filler in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve gas selectivity due to its unique one-dimensional hexagonal channels and high-density open metal sites (OMSs), which exhibit a strong affinity for CO2 molecules. Reducing the agglomeration of nanoparticles and improving the compatibility with the matrix can effectively avoid the existence of non-selective voids to improve the gas separation efficiency. We propose a novel, layer-by-layer modification strategy for MOF-74 with graphene oxide. Two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets as a supporting skeleton creatively improve the dispersion uniformity of MOFs in MMMs, enhance their interfacial compatibility, and thus optimize the selective gas permeability. Additionally, they extended the gas diffusion paths, thereby augmenting the dissolution selectivity. Compared with doping with a single component, the use of a GO skeleton to disperse MOF-74 into Pebax®1657 (Polyether Block Amide) achieved a significant improvement in terms of the gas separation effect. The CO2/N2 selectivity of Pebax®1657-MOF-74 (Ni)@GO membrane with a filler concentration of 10 wt% was 76.96, 197.2% higher than the pristine commercial membrane Pebax®1657. Our results highlight an effective way to improve the selective gas separation performance of MMMs by functionalizing the MOF supported by layered GO. As an efficient strategy for developing porous MOF-based gas separation membranes, this method holds particular promise for manufacturing advanced carbon dioxide separation membranes and also concentrates on improving CO2 capture with new membrane technologies, a key step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon capture and storage.
