Development and Validation of a Questionnaire to Assess Role Conflicts Among Interpreters Working With Refugee Clients: The Role Conflicts Questionnaire.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a questionnaire to assess interpreters' role conflicts and the challenging aspects within the triad of practitioner, interpreter and refugee client. Methods: A questionnaire was developed based on previous literature. Its factor structure and construct validity were assessed in an online survey of 164 interpreters working with refugee clients. Psychological distress (BSI-18), work-related exhaustion (CBI), and secondary traumatic stress (ProQOL) were measured to test the questionnaire's convergent validity. Results: Exploratory structural equation modeling for categorical variables resulted in 23 items across four subscales. The scores of all subscales had good or excellent reliability (ω = 0.81 to ω = 0.93) and correlation analyses indicated convergent validity. Conclusion: The final questionnaire (RoCo) showed four clearly interpretable subscales and may help to identify emotional distress due to role conflicts among interpreters. Future studies should validate the questionnaire in different samples.

Project description:BackgroundPatient-centered care is an essential component of health care quality. To achieve patient-centered care, health care authorities should have a clear definition and an applicable tool to measure the extent of its application. The real concept of patient centeredness should be developed by the patients themselves. We aimed to demonstrate a way to develop a draft Arabic patient-centered infertility care (PCIC) questionnaire for females clients following practical steps that address women with infertility.MethodsAn iterative process of questionnaire development was undertaken by combining two approaches: the steps proposed by Robert F. DeVellis for scale development and the recommended practices for questionnaire development and testing in the European statistical system. We attempted to develop the draft questionnaire that involved conceptualization and operationalization, generation of an item pool, development of the questionnaire format, review of the initial item pool by experts, and consideration of validation items for inclusion.ResultsWe generated an item pool from in-depth interviews with 14 women who sought infertility care within 6 months before the interview time. We then added more items from a literature review. The item pool contained 123 items distributed through 10 domains. Ten women with infertility were included for face validation. Then, experts with backgrounds in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Family Medicine, and Public Health reviewed the item pool using content validation (n = 10 professors and/or specialists). The item pool was finally reduced to 57 items. We developed the draft Arabic patient-centered infertility care questionnaire for female clients (PCIQ-F) with three sections, including 66 items: background variables, PCIC experience variables, and a general question about the quality of infertility care in the health facility. The draft questionnaire was further reviewed and edited last by experts in preparation for part 2, which will test the questionnaire and prepare the final version.ConclusionThe PCIQ-F questionnaire development is a multi-step iterative process started and ended by the target users as experts. Experts' participation in infertility care and in questionnaire format development had a great impact on questionnaire development and conflict resolution. We recommend this transparent and replicable approach for new instrument developers; it is likely to generate a questionnaire that is valid and acceptable to target users. The draft PCIQ-F questionnaire is ready for testing of its psychometric properties before the final version to measure the PCIC level in health facilities.

Project description:BackgroundThe food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is the most frequently used method to assess dietary intake in epidemiological studies evaluating diet-disease association. The objective of this study was to validate a FFQ for use among Lebanese adults by evaluating various facets of validity and reproducibility.MethodsThe quantitative 164-items FFQ was validated against the average of six 24-h dietary recalls (DRs) in a sample of 238 Lebanese adults. Reproducibility of the FFQ was assessed by administering it twice within 1 month' time interval.ResultsPositive statistically significant Pearson correlations were observed in most macro and micronutrients between the FFQ and the six 24-h DRs, ranging from 0.16 to 0.65, with two thirds of the correlation coefficients exceeding 0.3. Energy, gender, and age-adjusted statistically significant Pearson correlation coefficients ranged from 0.14 to 0.64, with two thirds of the coefficients exceeding 0.2. Intakes from the FFQ were mostly higher than those of the 24-h DRs. Mean percent difference between nutrient intakes from both dietary methods decreased remarkably after using energy-adjusted mean intakes. Values were acceptable to good for all macronutrients and several micronutrients. Cross-classification analysis revealed that around 64.3 to 83.9% of participants were classified into the same and adjacent quartile whereas grossly misclassified proportions ranged from 3.7 to 12.2%. Weighted kappa values ranged from 0.02 to 0.36 with most of them exceeding 0.2. In indirect validity analysis, key nutrient mean intakes estimated from the six 24-h DRs were significantly positively associated with tertiles of food groups derived from the FFQ. Bland Altman plots showed that the majority of data points fell within the limits of agreement (LOA) for all nutrients. As for reproducibility analysis, ICC values were all statistically significant ranging from 0.645 to 0.959 and Bland Altman plots confirmed these results.ConclusionsBased on various aspects of validity and reproducibility, and an extensive range of statistical tests, the present FFQ developed for a Lebanese community is an acceptable tool for dietary assessment and is useful for evaluating diet-disease associations in future studies.

Project description:BackgroundLifestyle is intimately related to health. A questionnaire that specifically scores the healthiness of lifestyle of Catalan adolescents is needed. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a scoring questionnaire called VISA-TEEN to assess the healthy lifestyle of young Catalans that can be answered quickly and user-friendly.MethodsA lifestyle questionnaire was developed based on the analysis of contributions from two focus groups, one with adolescents and the other with people who work with them (teachers and doctors). A panel of experts validated the content of items that were ultimately selected for the VISA-TEEN questionnaire. Three hundred ninety-six adolescents (215 boys and 181 girls, age = 13-19 years) completed the VISA-TEEN. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha (α) reliability coefficient. Test-retest reliability, using an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), was calculated based on scores attained two weeks apart. Construct validity was assessed by the extraction of components with an exploratory factor analysis. The relationship between the scores was measured using the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) KIDSCREEN-10 Index (the relationship was assessed by calculating Pearson's r correlation coefficient). The association of scores in the VISA-TEEN for self-rated health (SRH) was also examined by executing an analysis of variance (ANOVA) between the different categories of this variable. We also calculated the index of fit for factor scales (IFFS) for each component, as well as the discriminatory power of the instrument using Ferguson's δ (delta) coefficient.ResultsThe VISA-TEEN questionnaire showed acceptable reliability (α = 0.66, αest = 0.77) and a very good test-retest agreement (ICC = 0.860). It could be broken down into the following five components, all with an acceptable or very good IFFS (0.7-0.96): diet, substance abuse, physical activity, Rational Use of Technological Leisure (RUTL), and hygiene. Scores on the VISA-TEEN showed significant correlation with the KIDSCREEN index (r = 0.21, p < 0.001) and were associated with SRH (p < 0.001). The discriminatory power was found to be δ = 0.97.ConclusionsThe VISA-TEEN questionnaire developed to study the lifestyle of Catalan adolescents is a valid instrument to apply in this population as it is shown in the present psychometric tests to understand the role of lifestyle in the health of teenagers or to test the efficacy of health campaigns intended to improve teenagers' lifestyle.
