Project description:Unsatisfied electrode bonding in half-Heusler devices renders thermal damage and large efficiency loss, which limits their practical service at high temperatures. Here, we develop a thermodynamic strategy to screen barrier layer elements. Theoretically, we found that the interface between VIIB elements and half-Heuslers possesses near-zero interfacial reaction energy and large atomic diffusion barrier. Experimentally, such an interphase proves to be the atomic direct bonding and has high thermal stability at 1073 K, leading to ideal ohmic contact. Such thermally inert and ohmic contact interface enable modules stably to work at elevated temperature up to 1100 K, which releases the peak performance of half-Heuslers and in turn boosts the energy conversion efficiencies to the records of 11.1% and 13.3% for half-Heusler single-stage and half-Heusler/Bi2Te3 segmented modules. This design strategy provides a feasible solution for the high-temperature half-Heusler generators and gives enlightenment for other package interconnection design of electronic devices.

Project description:Spatially resolved current measurements such as scanning photocurrent microscopy (SPCM) have been extensively applied to investigate carrier transport properties in semiconductor nanowires. A traditional simple-exponential-decay formula based on the assumption of carrier diffusion dominance in the scanning photocurrent profiles can be applied for carrier diffusion length extraction using SPCM in Schottky-contact-based or p-n junction-based devices where large built-in electric fields exist. However, it is also important to study the electric-field dependent transport properties in widely used ohmic-contact nanowire devices where the assumption of carrier diffusion dominance is invalid. Here we derive an analytic formula for scanning photocurrent profiles in such ohmic-contact nanowire devices under uniform applied electric fields and weak optical excitation. Under these operation conditions and the influence of photo-carrier-induced electric field, the scanning photocurrent profile and the carrier spatial distribution strikingly do not share the same functional form. Instead, a surprising new analytic relation between the scanning photocurrent profile and the minority carrier decay length was established. Then the derived analytic formula was validated numerically and experimentally. This analytic formula provides a new fitting method for SPCM profiles to correctly determine the minority carrier decay length, which allows us to quantitatively evaluate the performance of nanowire-based devices.

Project description:The photochemical and thermal stability of the detergent-solubilized blue- and green-absorbing proteorhodpsins, BPR and GPR, respectively, are investigated to determine the viability of these proteins for photonic device applications. Photochemical stability is studied by using pulsed laser excitation and differential UV-vis spectroscopy to assign the photocyclicity. GPR, with a cyclicity of 7 × 10(4) photocycles protein(-1), is 4-5 times more stable than BPR (9 × 10(3) photocycles protein(-1)), but is less stable than native bacteriorhodopsin (9 × 10(5) photocycles protein(-1)) or the 4-keto-bacteriorhodopsin analogue (1 × 10(5) photocycles protein(-1)). The thermal stabilities are assigned by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal bleaching experiments. Both proteorhodopsins display excellent thermal stability, with melting temperatures above 85 °C, and remain photochemically stable up to 75 °C. The biological relevance of our results is also discussed. The lower cyclicity of BPR is found to be adequate for the long-term biological function of the host organism at ocean depths of 50 m or more.

Project description:Zn metal holds grand promise as the anodes of aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. However, the rampant zinc dendrite growth and severe surface side reactions significantly impede the commercial implementation. Herein, a universal Zn-metal oxide Ohmic contact interface model is demonstrated for effectively improving Zn plating/stripping reversibility. The high work function difference between Zn and metal oxides enables the building of an interfacial anti-blocking layer for dendrite-free Zn deposition. Moreover, the metal oxide layer can function as a physical barrier to suppress the pernicious side reactions. Consequently, the proof-of-concept CeO2 -modified Zn anode delivers ultrastable durability of over 1300 h at 0.5-5 mA cm-2 and improved Coulombic efficiency, the feasibility of which is also evidenced in MoS2 //Zn full cells. This study enriches the fundamental comprehension of Ohmic contact interfaces on the Zn deposition, which may shed light on the development of other metal battery anodes.

Project description:The rational design of high-temperature endurable Cu-based catalysts is a long-sought goal since they are suffering from significant sintering. Establishing a barrier on the metal surface by the classical strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is supposed to be an efficient way for immobilizing nanoparticles. However, Cu particles were regarded as impossible to form classical SMSI before irreversible sintering. Herein, we fabricate the SMSI between sputtering reconstructed Cu and flame-made LaTiO2 support at a mild reduction temperature, exhibiting an ultra-stable performance for more than 500 h at 600 °C. The sintering of Cu nanoparticles is effectively suppressed even at as high as 800 °C. The critical factors to success are reconstructing the electronic structure of Cu atoms in parallel with enhancing the support reducibility, which makes them adjustable by sputtering power or decorated supports. This strategy will extremely broaden the applications of Cu-based catalysts at more severe conditions and shed light on establishing SMSI on other metals.

Project description:To improve the dimensional thermal stability of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a poly(ethylene glycol 1,4-cyclohexane dimethylene (CHDM) isosorbide (ISB) terephthalate) (PEICT) known as ECOZEN®T110 (EZT) was introduced into PET using a melt blending technique. The miscibility, morphology, and thermal properties of the PET/EZT samples were investigated. The introduction of amorphous EZT into semi-crystalline PET increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) but decreased the crystallinity, which could be related to the transesterification reaction. By adding EZT contents up to 20%, the PET/EZT samples showed a single Tg, which indicated the miscibility between PET and EZT. However, two Tg values were observed in the PET/EZT samples with higher EZT contents (30-70%), indicating partial miscibility. This may have been due to the slightly different rheological and thermodynamic parameters that were affected by a higher ratio of bulky (rigid ISB and ductile CHDM) groups in EZT. However, the heat distortion temperature of the PET/EZT samples remarkably increased, which indicated that the dimensional stability was truly enhanced. Although the crystallinity of the PET/EZT samples decreased with increasing EZT content, the tensile strength and Young's modulus decreased slightly. Based on these results, the as-prepared PET/EZT samples with high dimensional stability can be used as a high-temperature polymeric material in various applications.

Project description:We describe the structure and properties of [Zn(C6H4N5)N3] n , a new nonporous three-dimensional high-energy metal-organic framework (HE-MOF) with enhanced thermal stability. The compound is synthesized by the hydrothermal method with in situ ligand formation under controlled pH and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and Fourier transform infrared. The measured detonation temperature (T det = 345 °C) and heat of detonation (ΔH det = -0.380 kcal/g) compare well with commercial explosives and other nitrogen-rich HE-MOFs. The velocity and pressure of denotation are 5.96 km/s and 9.56 GPa, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis shows that the denotation of [Zn(C6H4N5)N3] n occurs via a complex temperature-dependent mechanism.

Project description:Two-dimensional material-based field-effect transistors (2DM-FETs) are playing a revolutionary role in electronic devices. However, before electronic design automation (EDA) for 2DM-FETs can be achieved, it remains necessary to determine how to incorporate contact transports into model. Reported methods compromise between physical intelligibility and model compactness due to the heterojunction nature. To address this, quasi-Fermi-level phase space theory (QFLPS) is generalized to incorporate contact transports using the Landauer formula. It turns out that the Landauer-QFLPS model effectively overcomes the issue of concern. The proposed new formula can describe 2DM-FETs with Schottky or Ohmic contacts with superior accuracy and efficiency over previous methods, especially when describing non-monotonic drain conductance characteristics. A three-bit threshold inverter quantizer (TIQ) circuit is fabricated using ambipolar black phosphorus and it is demonstrated that the model accurately predicts circuit performance. The model could be very effective and valuable in the development of 2DM-FET-based integrated circuits.

Project description:Pressure-enhanced sterilization (PES) and ohmic heating (OH) are two emerging sterilization techniques, currently lacking implementation in the food industry. However, both technologies offer significant benefits in terms of spore inactivation using reduced thermal intensity in food products, as well as minimized effects on sensory and nutritional profiles. In this study, PES and OH were tested based on possible food safety process windows in comparison to thermal retorting, to optimize the food quality of carrot-based purees. The following parameters related to food quality were tested: texture, carotenoid content, color, and detectable amount of food processing contaminants (FPC) formed. Application of the innovative sterilization techniques resulted in a better retention of color, texture, and carotenoids (for PES) as well as a reduced formation of food processing contaminants. Importantly, a significant reduction in the formation of furan and its derivates was observed, compared to the retorted samples. Hence, both sterilization technologies showed promising results in the mitigation of potential toxic processing contaminants and retention of quality attributes.

Project description:Electrical heating has been proposed as a potential method for pathogen inactivation in human waste sludge, especially in decentralized wastewater treatment systems. In this study, we investigated the heat production and E. coli inactivation in wastewater sludge using electrical thermal treatment. Various concentrations of NaCl and NH4Cl were tested as electrolyte to enhance conductivity in sludge mixtures. At same voltage input (18V), sludge treated with direct current (DC) exhibited slower ascent of temperature and lower energy efficiencies for heat production comparing to that using alternate current (AC). However, DC power showed better performance in E. coli inactivation due to electrochemical inactivation in addition to thermal inactivation. Greater than 6log10 removal of E. coli was demonstrated within 2h using 0.15M of NaCl as electrolyte by AC or DC power. The heat production in sludge was modeled using Maxwell-Eucken and effective medium theory based on the effective electrical conductivity in the two-phase (liquid and solid) sludge mixtures. The results showed that the water and heat loss is a critical consideration in modeling of sludge temperature using ohmic heating. The experimental data also suggested that the models are less applicable to DC power because the electrochemical reactions triggered by DC reduce the concentration of NH4+ and other ions that serve as electrolyte. The results of this study contribute to the development of engineering strategies for human waste sludge management.
