Triphenylamine-Based Helical Polymer for Flexible Memristors.

ABSTRACT: Flexible nonvolatile memristors have potential applications in wearable devices. In this work, a helical polymer, poly (N, N-diphenylanline isocyanide) (PPIC), was synthesized as the active layer, and flexible electronic devices with an Al/PPIC/ITO architecture were prepared on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The device showed typical nonvolatile rewritable memristor characteristics. The high-molecular-weight helical structure stabilized the active layer under different bending degrees, bending times, and number of bending cycles. The memristor was further employed to simulate the information transmission capability of neural fibers, providing new perspectives for the development of flexible wearable memristors and biomimetic neural synapses. This demonstration highlights the promising possibilities for the advancement of artificial intelligence skin and intelligent flexible robots in the future.

Facile Synthesis of Triphenylamine Based Hyperbranched Polymer for Organic Field Effect Transistors.

Project description:In this study, we reported the synthesis and characterization of a novel hyperbranched polymer (HBPs) tris[(4-phenyl)amino-alt-4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b']dithiophene] (PTPABDT) composed of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) and triphenyleamine (TPA) constituent subunits by A3 + B2 type Stille's reaction. An estimated optical band gap of 1.69 eV with HOMO and LUMO levels of -5.29 eV and -3.60 eV, respectively, as well as a high thermal stability up to 398 °C were characterized for the synthesized polymer. PTPABDT fabricated as an encapsulated top gate/bottom contact (TGBC), organic field effect transistors (OFET) exhibited a p-type behavior with maximum field-effect mobility (µmax) and an on/off ratio of 1.22 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 7.47 × 102, respectively.

Silsesquioxane-Based Triphenylamine-Linked Fluorescent Porous Polymer for Dyes Adsorption and Nitro-Aromatics Detection.

Project description:In order to enrich hybrid materials, a novel fluorescent silsesquioxane-based polymer (denoted as PCS-OTS) was synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reaction starting from octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) with triphenylamine-functionalized silsesquioxane monomer (denoted as OTS) with AlCl3 as catalyst. PCS-OTS possessed a high surface area of 816 m2/g and a unique bimodal pore structure. The triphenylamine unit endowed PCS-OTS with excellent luminescence, which made it act as a sensitive chemical sensor and detect p-nitrophenol with high sensitivity (KSV = 81,230 M-1). Moreover, PCS-OTS can significantly remove dyes, and the respective adsorption capacity for Rhodamine B (RB), Congo red (CR) and Methyl Orange (MO) is 1935, 1420 and 155 mg/g. Additionally, it could simultaneously remove multiple dyes from water by simple filtration and be easily regenerated. This hybrid porous polymer can be a good choice for water treatment.

Halide perovskite memristors as flexible and reconfigurable physical unclonable functions.

Project description:Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) address the inherent limitations of conventional hardware security solutions in edge-computing devices. Despite impressive demonstrations with silicon circuits and crossbars of oxide memristors, realizing efficient roots of trust for resource-constrained hardware remains a significant challenge. Hybrid organic electronic materials with a rich reservoir of exotic switching physics offer an attractive, inexpensive alternative to design efficient cryptographic hardware, but have not been investigated till date. Here, we report a breakthrough security primitive exploiting the switching physics of one dimensional halide perovskite memristors as excellent sources of entropy for secure key generation and device authentication. Measurements of a prototypical 1 kb propyl pyridinium lead iodide (PrPyr[PbI3]) weak memristor PUF with a differential write-back strategy reveals near ideal uniformity, uniqueness and reliability without additional area and power overheads. Cycle-to-cycle write variability enables reconfigurability, while in-memory computing empowers a strong recurrent PUF construction to thwart machine learning attacks.

Crossmodal sensory neurons based on high-performance flexible memristors for human-machine in-sensor computing system.

Project description:Constructing crossmodal in-sensor processing system based on high-performance flexible devices is of great significance for the development of wearable human-machine interfaces. A bio-inspired crossmodal in-sensor computing system can perform real-time energy-efficient processing of multimodal signals, alleviating data conversion and transmission between different modules in conventional chips. Here, we report a bio-inspired crossmodal spiking sensory neuron (CSSN) based on a flexible VO2 memristor, and demonstrate a crossmodal in-sensor encoding and computing system for wearable human-machine interfaces. We demonstrate excellent performance in the VO2 memristor including endurance (>1012), uniformity (0.72% for cycle-to-cycle variations and 3.73% for device-to-device variations), speed (<30 ns), and flexibility (bendable to a curvature radius of 1 mm). A flexible hardware processing system is implemented based on the CSSN, which can directly perceive and encode pressure and temperature bimodal information into spikes, and then enables the real-time haptic-feedback for human-machine interaction. We successfully construct a crossmodal in-sensor spiking reservoir computing system via the CSSNs, which can achieve dynamic objects identification with a high accuracy of 98.1% and real-time signal feedback. This work provides a feasible approach for constructing flexible bio-inspired crossmodal in-sensor computing systems for wearable human-machine interfaces.

Flexible Supercapacitors Based on Stretchable Conducting Polymer Electrodes.

Project description:Supercapacitors are widely used in various fields due to their high power density, fast charging and discharging speeds, and long service life. However, with the increasing demand for flexible electronics, integrated supercapacitors in devices are also facing more challenges, such as extensibility, bending stability, and operability. Despite many reports on stretchable supercapacitors, challenges still exist in their preparation process, which involves multiple steps. Therefore, we prepared stretchable conducting polymer electrodes by depositing thiophene and 3-methylthiophene on patterned 304 stainless steel (SS 304) through electropolymerization. The cycling stability of the prepared stretchable electrodes could be further improved by protecting them with poly(vinyl alcohol)/sulfuric acid (PVA/H2SO4) gel electrolyte. Specifically, the mechanical stability of the polythiophene (PTh) electrode was improved by 2.5%, and the stability of the poly(3-methylthiophene (P3MeT) electrode was improved by 7.0%. As a result, the assembled flexible supercapacitors maintained 93% of their stability even after 10,000 cycles of strain at 100%, which indicates potential applications in flexible electronics.

Flexible and Transparent Polymer-Based Optical Humidity Sensor.

Project description:Thin spin-coated polymer films of amphiphilic copolymer obtained by partial acetalization of poly (vinyl alcohol) are used as humidity-sensitive media. They are deposited on polymer substrate (PET) in order to obtain a flexible humidity sensor. Pre-metallization of substrate is implemented for increasing the optical contrast of the sensor, thus improving the sensitivity. The morphology of the sensors is studied by surface profiling, while the transparency of the sensor is controlled by transmittance measurements. The sensing behavior is evaluated through monitoring of transmittance values at different levels of relative humidity gradually changing in the range 5-95% and the influence of up to 1000 bending deformations is estimated by determining the hysteresis and sensitivity of the flexible sensor after each set of deformations. The successful development of a flexible sensor for optical monitoring of humidity in a wide humidity range is demonstrated and discussed.

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal translation of a helical supramolecular polymer to a helical covalent polymer.

Project description:Polymers possessing helical conformation in the solid state are in high demand. We report a helical peptide-polymer via the topochemical ene-azide cycloaddition (TEAC) polymerization. The molecules of the designed Gly-Phe-based dipeptide, decorated with ene and azide, assemble in its crystals as β-sheets and as supramolecular helices in two mutually perpendicular directions. While the NH…O H-bonding facilitates β-sheet-like stacking along one direction, weak CH…N H-bonding between the azide-nitrogen and vinylic-hydrogen of molecules belonging to the adjacent stacks arranges them in a head-to-tail manner as supramolecular helices. In the crystal lattice, the azide and alkene of adjacent molecules in the supramolecular helix are suitably preorganized for their TEAC reaction. The dipeptide underwent regio- and stereospecific polymerization upon mild heating in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion, yielding a triazoline-linked helical covalent polymer that could be characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Upon heating, the triazoline-linked polymer undergoes denitrogenation to aziridine-linked polymer, as evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state NMR analyses.

Flexible bioelectronic device fabricated by conductive polymer-based living material.

Project description:Living materials are worked as an inside collaborative system that could naturally respond to changing environmental conditions. The regulation of bioelectronic processes in living materials could be effective for collecting biological signals and detecting biomarkers. Here, we constructed a living material with conjugated polymers poly[3-(3'-N,N,N-triethylamino-1'-propyloxy)-4-methyl-2,5-thiophene chloride] (PMNT) and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilm. In addition, the living material was integrated as a flexible bioelectronic device for lactate detection in physiological fluids (sweat, urine, and plasma). Owing to the electroconductivity of conjugated polymers, PMNT could optimize the bioelectronic process in the living material. The collected electrical signal could be wirelessly transferred to a portable smartphone for reading and analyzing. Because lactate is also a biomarker for cancer treatment, the flexible bioelectronic device was further used to detect and count the cancer cells. The proof of the bioelectronic device using conductive polymer-based living material exhibits promising applications in the next-generation personal health monitoring systems.

Cross-Linked Polyacrylic-Based Hydrogel Polymer Electrolytes for Flexible Supercapacitors.

Project description:Hydrogel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), as an important component of flexible energy storage devices, have gradually received wide attention compared with traditional liquid electrolytes due to their advantages of good mechanical, bending, and safety properties. In this paper, two cross-linked GPEs of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) or poly(acrylic acid-co-N-methylolacrylamide) with NaNO3 aqueous solution (P(AA-co-AM)/NaNO3 or P(AA-co-HAM)/NaNO3) were successfully prepared using radical polymerization, respectively, using acrylic acid (AA) as the monomer, N-methylolacrylamide (HAM) or acrylamide (AM) as the comonomer, and N, N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) as the cross-linking agent. We investigated the morphology, glass transition temperature (Tg), ionic conductivities, mechanical properties, and thermal stabilities of the two GPEs. By comparison, P(AA-co-HAM)/NaNO3 GPE exhibits a higher ionic conductivity of 2.00 × 10-2 S/cm, lower Tg of 152 °C, and appropriate mechanical properties, which are attributed to the hydrogen bonding between the -COOH and -OH, and moderate cross-linking. The flexible symmetrical supercapacitors were assembled with the two GPEs and two identical activated carbon electrodes, respectively. The results show that the flexible supercapacitor with P(AA-co-HAM)/NaNO3 GPE shows good electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 63.9 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 and a capacitance retention of 89.4% after 3000 charge-discharge cycles. Our results provide a simple and practical design strategy of GPEs for flexible supercapacitors with wide application prospects.

Memristors Using Solution-Based IGZO Nanoparticles.

Project description:Solution-based indium-gallium-zinc oxide (IGZO) nanoparticles deposited by spin coating have been investigated as a resistive switching layer in metal-insulator-metal structures for nonvolatile memory applications. Optimized devices show a bipolar resistive switching behavior, low programming voltages of ±1 V, on/off ratios higher than 10, high endurance, and a retention time of up to 104 s. The better performing devices were achieved with annealing temperatures of 200 °C and using asymmetric electrode materials of titanium and silver. The physics behind the improved switching properties of the devices is discussed in terms of the oxygen deficiency of IGZO. Temperature analysis of the conductance states revealed a nonmetallic filamentary conduction. The presented devices are potential candidates for the integration of memory functionality into low-cost System-on-Panel technology.
