Project description:The copper coordination chemistry of two multidentate carboxamido ligands derived from HL1 (offering two quinolyl and one carboxamide donor) and H4L2 (with two pyridine(dicarboxamido) units linked by naphthalene spacers) was explored. The former was chosen because upon deprotonation it would provide a monoanionic mer-coordinating N-donor set that would model the putative deprotonated form of the His-brace in copper monooxygenases, while the latter was designed to bind two copper ions and enable comparisons to other systems with different ligand spacers. Upon reaction with Cu(I)-mesityl, HL1 yielded a symmetric dimer (L1Cu)2 in which each bis(quinolyl)amide ligand binds via two N-donors to one Cu(I) ion and via the third to the other Cu(I) center. Monomeric Cu(II) complexes [L 1 Cu(H 2 O) 2 ](OTf) and L 1 2 Cu were also characterized. Treatment of H4L2 with Cu(OTf)2 and excess Me4NOH (in CH3CN, pyridine/H2O, or MeOH) yielded complexes with anions of general formula [L 2 Cu 2 (X)]n-, where X = CH3CONH- (n = 1), CO3 2- (n = 2), or MeO- (n = 1). X-ray structures of these complexes revealed the (L2)4- ligand binding to two Cu(II) ions in an open paddle-wheel geometry, with an additional bridging ligand (X) completing the square planar coordination sphere of each metal ion. The open paddlewheel motif differs from the more 'open' puckered geometry seen with related ligands with different spacer units.

Project description:A mixture of 2-pyridine carboxaldehyde, 4-formylimidazole (or 2-methyl-4-formylimidazole), and NiCl2·6H2O in a molar ratio of 2:2:1 was reacted with two equivalents of hydrazine monohydrate in methanol, followed by the addition of aqueous NH4PF6 solution, afforded a NiII complex with two unsymmetric azine-based ligands, [Ni(HLH)2](PF6)2 (1) or [Ni(HLMe)2](PF6)2 (2), in a high yield, where HLH denotes 2-pyridylmethylidenehydrazono-(4-imidazolyl)methane and HLMe is its 2-methyl-4-imidazolyl derivative. The spectroscopic measurements and elemental analysis confirmed the phase purity of the bulk products, and the single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed the molecular and crystal structures of the NiII complexes bearing an unsymmetric HLH or HLMe azines in a tridentate κ3N, N', N" coordination mode. The HLH complex with a methanol solvent, 1·MeOH, crystallizes in the orthorhombic non-centrosymmetric space group P212121 with Z = 4, affording conglomerate crystals, while the HLMe complex, 2·H2O·Et2O, crystallizes in the monoclinic and centrosymmetric space group P21/n with Z = 4. In the crystal of 2·H2O·Et2O, there is intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between the imidazole N-H and the neighboring uncoordinated azine-N atom, forming a one-dimensional polymeric structure, but there is no obvious magnetic interaction among the intra- and interchain paramagnetic NiII ions.

Project description:We report a new strategy to minimize the hydrodynamic size of quantum dots (QDs) and to overcome their colloidal stability and photobleaching problems based on the use of multifunctional and multidentate polymer ligands. A novel finding is that a balanced composition of thiol (-SH) and amine (-NH 2) coordinating groups grafted to a linear polymer chain leads to highly compact nanocrystals with exceptional colloidal stability, a strong resistance to photobleaching, and high fluorescence quantum yields. In contrast to the standing brushlike conformation of PEGylated dihydrolipoic acid molecules, mutlidentate polymer ligands can wrap around the QDs in a closed "loops-and-trains" conformation. This structure is highly stable thermodynamically and is responsible for the excellent colloidal and optical properties. We have optimized this process for the preparation of ultrastable CdTe nanocrystals and have found the strategy to be broadly applicable to a wide range of nanocrystalline materials and heterostructures. This work has led to a new generation of bright and stable QDs with small hydrodynamic diameters between 5.6 and 9.7 nm with tunable fluorescence emission from the visible (515 nm) to the near-infrared (720 nm). These QDs are well suited for molecular and cellular imaging applications in which the nanoparticle hydrodynamic size must be minimized.

Project description:This work comprehensively investigated the coordination chemistry of a hexa-dentate neutral amine ligand, namely, N,N',N"-tris-(2-N-diethylaminoethyl)-1,4,7-triaza-cyclononane (DETAN), with group-1 metal cations (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+). Versatile coordination modes were observed, from four-coordinate trigonal pyramidal to six-coordinate trigonal prismatic, depending on the metal ionic radii and metal's substituent. For comparison, the coordination chemistry of a tetra-dentate tris-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6Tren) ligand was also studied. This work defines the available coordination modes of two multidentate amine ligands (DETAN and Me6Tren), guiding future applications of these ligands for pursuing highly reactive and elusive s-block and rare-earth metal complexes.

Project description:We propose a chelation-assisted assembly of multidentate CNs into metal-organic nanoparticles (MONs). Multidentate CNs functionalized with coordination sites participate equally as organic linkers in MON construction, which is driven by chelation between metal ions and coordination sites. MONs assembled from Au nanoparticles display particle number- and size-dependent optical properties. In addition, the resulting CN-assembled MONs give evidence that assembly was dictated by the multidentate surface ligand rather than the size, shape or material of CNs. With this chelation-assisted strategy, it is possible to control the number of assembled CNs and build the connections between them.

Project description:We report the growth and photophysical characterization of two polar hybrid lead halide phases, methylenedianiline lead iodide and bromide, (MDA)Pb2I6 and (MDA)Pb2Br6, respectively. The phases crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space group Fdd2, which produces a highly oriented molecular dipole moment that gives rise to second harmonic generation (SHG) upon excitation at 1064 nm. While both compositions are isostructural, the size dependence of the SHG signal suggests that the bromide exhibits a stronger phase-matching response whereas the iodide exhibits a significantly weaker non-phase-matching signal. Similarly, fluorescence from (MDA)Pb2Br6 is observed around 630 nm below 75 K whereas only very weak luminescence from (MDA)Pb2I6 can be seen. We attribute the contrasting optical properties to differences in the character of the halide sublattice and postulate that the increased polarizability of the iodide ions acts to screen the local dipole moment, effectively reducing the local electric field in the crystals.

Project description:A systematic series of four novel homo- and heteroleptic CuI photosensitizers based on tetradentate 1,10-phenanthroline ligands of the type X^N^N^X containing two additional donor moieties in the 2,9-position (X=SMe or OMe) were designed. Their solid-state structures were assessed by X-ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption, emission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy were then used to determine their electrochemical, photophysical and structural features in solution. Following, time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the picosecond time scale, coupled with time-dependent density functional theory calculations, provided in-depth information on the excited state electron configurations. For the first time, a significant shortening of the Cu-X distance and a change in the coordination mode to a pentacoordinated geometry is shown in the excited states of the two homoleptic complexes. These findings are important with respect to a precise understanding of the excited state structures and a further stabilization of this type of photosensitizers.

Project description:A series of dinuclear copper(I) N,C,N- and P,C,P-carbodiphosphorane (CDP) complexes using multidentate ligands CDP(Py)2 (1) and (CDP(CH2PPh2)2 (13) have been isolated and characterized. Detailed structural information was gained by single-crystal XRD analyses of nine representative examples. The common structural motive is the central double ylidic carbon atom with its characteristic two lone pairs involved in the binding of two geminal L-Cu(I) fragments at Cu-Cu distances in the range 2.55-2.67 Å. In order to enhance conformational rigidity within the characteristic Cu-C-Cu triangle, two types of chelating side arms were symmetrically attached to each phosphorus atom: two 2-pyridyl functions in ligand CDP(Py)2 (1) and its dinuclear copper complexes 2-9 and 11, as well as two diphenylphosphinomethylene functions in ligand CDP(CH2PPh2)2 (13) and its di- and mononuclear complexes 14-18. Neutral complexes were typically obtained via the reaction of 1 with Cu(I) species CuCl, CuI, and CuSPh or via the salt elimination reaction of [(CuCl)2(CDP(Py)2] (2) with sodium carbazolate. Cationic Cu(I) complexes were prepared upon treating 1 with two equivalents of [Cu(NCMe)4]PF6, followed by the addition of either two equivalents of an aryl phosphine (PPh3, P(C6H4OMe)3) or one equivalent of bisphosphine ligands bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether (DPEPhos), 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (XantPhos), or 1,1'-bis(diphenyl-phosphino) ferrocene (dppf). For the first time, carbodiphosphorane CDP(CH2PPh2)2 (13) could be isolated upon treating its precursor [CH(dppm)2]Cl (12) with NaNH2 in liquid NH3. A protonated and a deprotonated derivative of ligand 13 were prepared, and their coordination was compared to neutral CDP ligand 13. NMR analysis and DFT calculations reveal that the most stable tautomer of 13 does not show a CDP (or carbone) structure in its uncoordinated base form. For most of the prepared complexes, photoluminescence upon irradiation with UV light at room temperature was observed. Quantum yields (ΦPL) were determined to be 36% for dicationic [(CuPPh3)2(CDP(Py)2)](PF6)2 (4) and 60% for neutral [(CuSPh)2(CDP(CH2PPh2)2] (16).

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxometalate (POM) compounds are a subset of materials with unique structures and physical/chemical properties. The combination of metal-organic coordination complexes with classical POMs not only provides a powerful way to gain multifarious new compounds but also affords a new method to modify and functionalize POMs. In parallel with the many reports on the synthesis and structure of new hybrid POM compounds, the application of these compounds for heterogeneous catalysis has also attracted considerable attention. The hybrid POM compounds show noteworthy catalytic performance in acid, oxidation, and even in asymmetric catalytic reactions. This review summarizes the design and synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid POM compounds and particularly highlights their recent progress in heterogeneous catalysis.
