Sub-terahertz feedback interferometry and imaging with emitters in 130 nm BiCMOS technology.

ABSTRACT: In this work, we present the effect of self-mixing in compact terahertz emitters implemented in a 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The devices are based on a differential Colpitts oscillator topology with optimized emission frequency at the fundamental harmonic. The radiation is out-coupled through the substrate side using a hyper-hemispheric silicon lens. The first source is optimized for 200 GHz and radiates up to 0.525 mW of propagating power. The second source emits up to 0.325 mW at 260 GHz. We demonstrate that in these devices, feedback radiation produces the change in bias current, the magnitude of which can reach up to several percent compared to the bias current itself, enabling feedback interferometric measurements. We demonstrate the applicability of feedback interferometry to perform coherent reflection-type raster-scan imaging.

Terahertz microscopy using laser feedback interferometry based on a generalised phase-stepping algorithm.

Project description:In this paper we report an improved method of coherent sensing through the use of a generalized phase-stepping algorithm to extract magnitude and phase information from interferometric fringes acquired by laser feedback interferometry (LFI). Our approach allows for significantly reduced optical sampling and acquisition times whilst also avoiding the need for fitting to complex models of lasers under optical feedback in post-processing. We investigate theoretically the applicability of this method under different levels of optical feedback, different laser parameters, and for different sampling conditions. We furthermore validate its use experimentally for LFI-based sensing using a terahertz (THz)-frequency laser in both far-field and near-field sensing configurations. Finally we demonstrate our approach for two-dimensional nanoscale imaging of the out-of-plane field supported by individual micro-resonators at THz frequencies. Our results show that fully coherent sensing can be achieved reliably with as little as 4 sampling points per imaging pixel, opening up opportunities for fast coherent sensing not only at THz frequencies but across the visible and infra-red spectrum.

Comparison of Physical and System Factors Impacting Hydration Sensing in Leaves Using Terahertz Time-Domain and Quantum Cascade Laser Feedback Interferometry Imaging.

Project description:To reduce the water footprint in agriculture, the recent push toward precision irrigation management has initiated a sharp rise in photonics-based hydration sensing in plants in a non-contact, non-invasive manner. Here, this aspect of sensing was employed in the terahertz (THz) range for mapping liquid water in the plucked leaves of Bambusa vulgaris and Celtis sinensis. Two complementary techniques, broadband THz time-domain spectroscopic imaging and THz quantum cascade laser-based imaging, were utilized. The resulting hydration maps capture the spatial variations within the leaves as well as the hydration dynamics in various time scales. Although both techniques employed raster scanning to acquire the THz image, the results provide very distinct and different information. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy provides rich spectral and phase information detailing the dehydration effects on the leaf structure, while THz quantum cascade laser-based laser feedback interferometry gives insight into the fast dynamic variation in dehydration patterns.

Biomedical application of terahertz imaging technology: a narrative review.

Project description:Background and objectiveTerahertz (THz) imaging has wide applications in biomedical research due to its properties, such as non-ionizing, non-invasive and distinctive spectral fingerprints. Over the past 6 years, the application of THz imaging in tumor tissue has made encouraging progress. However, due to the strong absorption of THz by water, the large size, high cost, and low sensitivity of THz devices, it is still difficult to be widely used in clinical practice. This paper provides ideas for researchers and promotes the development of THz imaging in clinical research.MethodsThe literature search was conducted in the Web of Science and PubMed databases using the keywords "Terahertz imaging", "Breast", "Brain", "Skin" and "Cancer". A total of 94 English language articles from 1 January, 2017 to 30 December, 2022 were reviewed.Key content and findingsIn this review, we briefly introduced the recent advances in THz near-field imaging, single-pixel imaging and real-time imaging, the applications of THz imaging for detecting breast, brain and skin tissues in the last 6 years were reviewed, and the advantages and existing challenges were identified. It is necessary to combine machine learning and metamaterials to develop real-time THz devices with small size, low cost and high sensitivity that can be widely used in clinical practice. More powerful THz detectors can be developed by combining graphene, designing structures and other methods to improve the sensitivity of the devices and obtain more accurate information. Establishing a THz database is one of the important methods to improve the repeatability and accuracy of imaging results.ConclusionsTHz technology is an effective method for tumor imaging. We believe that with the joint efforts of researchers and clinicians, accurate, real-time, and safe THz imaging will be widely applied in clinical practice in the future.

Sub-10 nm gate length graphene transistors: operating at terahertz frequencies with current saturation.

Project description:Radio-frequency application of graphene transistors is attracting much recent attention due to the high carrier mobility of graphene. The measured intrinsic cut-off frequency (f(T)) of graphene transistor generally increases with the reduced gate length (L(gate)) till L(gate) = 40?nm, and the maximum measured f(T) has reached 300?GHz. Using ab initio quantum transport simulation, we reveal for the first time that f(T) of a graphene transistor still increases with the reduced L(gate) when L(gate) scales down to a few nm and reaches astonishing a few tens of THz. We observe a clear drain current saturation when a band gap is opened in graphene, with the maximum intrinsic voltage gain increased by a factor of 20. Our simulation strongly suggests it is possible to design a graphene transistor with an extraordinary high f(T) and drain current saturation by continuously shortening L(gate) and opening a band gap.

Applications using high-Tc superconducting terahertz emitters.

Project description:Using recently-developed THz emitters constructed from single crystals of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, we performed three prototype tests of the devices to demonstrate their unique characteristic properties for various practical applications. The first is a compact and simple transmission type of THz imaging system using a Stirling cryocooler. The second is a high-resolution Michelson interferometer used as a phase-sensitive reflection-type imaging system. The third is a system with precise temperature control to measure the liquid absorption coefficient. The detailed characteristics of these systems are discussed.

Terahertz imaging with sub-wavelength resolution by femtosecond laser filament in air.

Project description:Terahertz (THz) imaging provides cutting edge technique in biology, medical sciences and non-destructive evaluation. However, due to the long wavelength of the THz wave, the obtained resolution of THz imaging is normally a few hundred microns and is much lower than that of the traditional optical imaging. We introduce a sub-wavelength resolution THz imaging technique which uses the THz radiation generated by a femtosecond laser filament in air as the probe. This method is based on the fact that the femtosecond laser filament forms a waveguide for the THz wave in air. The diameter of the THz beam, which propagates inside the filament, varies from 20 μm to 50 μm, which is significantly smaller than the wavelength of the THz wave. Using this highly spatially confined THz beam as the probe, THz imaging with resolution as high as 20 μm (~λ/38 at 0.4 THz) can be realized.

Modified aptamers enable quantitative sub-10-nm cellular DNA-PAINT imaging.

Project description:Although current implementations of super-resolution microscopy are technically approaching true molecular-scale resolution, this has not translated to imaging of biological specimens, because of the large size of conventional affinity reagents. Here we introduce slow off-rate modified aptamers (SOMAmers) as small and specific labeling reagents for use with DNA points accumulation in nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT). To demonstrate the achievable resolution, specificity, and multiplexing capability of SOMAmers, we labeled and imaged both transmembrane and intracellular targets in fixed and live cells.

Photoluminescence imaging of single photon emitters within nanoscale strain profiles in monolayer WSe<sub>2</sub>.

Project description:Local deformation of atomically thin van der Waals materials provides a powerful approach to create site-controlled chip-compatible single-photon emitters (SPEs). However, the microscopic mechanisms underlying the formation of such strain-induced SPEs are still not fully clear, which hinders further efforts in their deterministic integration with nanophotonic structures for developing practical on-chip sources of quantum light. Here we investigate SPEs with single-photon purity up to 98% created in monolayer WSe2 via nanoindentation. Using photoluminescence imaging in combination with atomic force microscopy, we locate single-photon emitting sites on a deep sub-wavelength spatial scale and reconstruct the details of the surrounding local strain potential. The obtained results suggest that the origin of the observed single-photon emission is likely related to strain-induced spectral shift of dark excitonic states and their hybridization with localized states of individual defects.

Triplet sensitization enables bidirectional isomerization of diazocine with 130 nm redshift in excitation wavelengths.

Project description:Diazocines are bridged azobenzenes with phenyl rings connected by a CH2-CH2 group. Despite this rather small structural difference, diazocine exhibits improved properties over azobenzene as a photoswitch and most importantly, its Z configuration is more stable than the E isomer. Herein, we reveal yet another unique feature of this emerging class of photoswitches. In striking contrast to azobenzenes and other photochromes, diazocine can be selectively switched in E → Z direction and most intriguingly from its thermodynamically stable Z to metastable E isomer upon successive excitation of two different triplet sensitizers present in solution at the same time. This approach leads to extraordinary large redshift of excitation wavelengths to perform isomerization i.e. from 400 nm blue to 530 nm green light (Z → E) and from 530 nm green to 740 nm far-red one (E → Z), which falls in the near-infrared window in biological tissue. Therefore, this work opens up of potential avenues for utilizing diazocines for example in photopharmacology, smart materials, light energy harvesting/storage devices, and out-of-equilibrium systems.

3D sub-diffraction imaging in a conventional confocal configuration by exploiting super-linear emitters.

Project description:Sub-diffraction microscopy enables bio-imaging with unprecedented clarity. However, most super-resolution methods require complex, costly purpose-built systems, involve image post-processing and struggle with sub-diffraction imaging in 3D. Here, we realize a conceptually different super-resolution approach which circumvents these limitations and enables 3D sub-diffraction imaging on conventional confocal microscopes. We refer to it as super-linear excitation-emission (SEE) microscopy, as it relies on markers with super-linear dependence of the emission on the excitation power. Super-linear markers proposed here are upconversion nanoparticles of NaYF4, doped with 20% Yb and unconventionally high 8% Tm, which are conveniently excited in the near-infrared biological window. We develop a computational framework calculating the 3D resolution for any viable scanning beam shape and excitation-emission probe profile. Imaging of colominic acid-coated upconversion nanoparticles endocytosed by neuronal cells, at resolutions twice better than the diffraction limit both in lateral and axial directions, illustrates the applicability of SEE microscopy for sub-cellular biology.
