Permeability evolution of Bentheim Sandstone at simulated georeservoir conditions.

ABSTRACT: Bentheim Sandstone is considered a suitable conventional georeservoir rock even at great depth because of its mineral composition, homogeneity, micro- and macrostructure, and is also used as a reference material in rock deformation tests. However, a full characterization of the permeability at representative depths has never been performed. Here we report new experimental data where the permeability of Bentheim Sandstone is measured both with a simultaneous variation and with a sequential variation of three different variables to simulate georeservoir conditions. The results indicate a decrease in permeability with simulated increasing depth until 2-3 km, followed by a partial permeability recovery until 4-5 km depth. During the exhumation path, initially, permeability is unaffected, but at shallow depths, a sharp increase in permeability is observed, likely due to microcracking. These variations are a consequence of a complex interaction between stress, pore pressure and temperature, highlighting the importance of experiments considering all three variables when studying the evolution of permeability at depth. These results will aid with the accurate estimation of permeability at different georeservoir conditions.

Project description:The long-term deformation and permeability evolution with time are key issues for geo-engineering applications such as radioactive waste disposal. Rock permeability concurrent with deformation is significantly influenced by cracking. This study investigated the creep-permeability evolution behavior of red sandstone specimens containing a single fissure under a confining pressure of 30 MPa. First, the effects of stress ratio (SR) and fissure dip angle on the creep behavior of rock were investigated. The more loading/unloading cyclic numbers, the larger the irrecoverable axial deformation. The instant elastic strains and visco-elastic strains linearly increased with SR for both the intact and fissured specimens, whereas the instant plastic strains showed different results. The visco-plastic strains nonlinearly increased. For fissured and intact specimens, the creep strains and the steady-state creep rates nonlinearly increased as SR increased. The instantaneous strains, instant elastic strains, and visco-elastic strains slightly varied when the fissure dip angle was less than 45° but notably decreased with increasing fissure dip angle beyond 45°. However, the fissure dip angle had no obvious effects on the plastic and creep strains. Damage (D) was defined using the ratio of non-elastic strains to the total strain. D increased approximately linearly with SR, but the fissure dip angle had no obvious influences. Subsequently, the long-term strength (LTS) of the red sandstone was determined using two different methods. The LTS first decreased when the fissure dip angle increased from 0 to 45° but increased with increasing dip angle. The triaxial and creep failure modes were mainly shear along anti-wing cracks for the fissured specimens but shear failure occurred for the intact specimen. Moreover, the permeability of the fissured red sandstone was governed by SR and deformation or time. During the multi-step loading/unloading creep process, the permeability first decreased and then had a sudden rise when tertiary creep occurred.

Project description:An accurate and reliable description of the porosity-permeability relationship in geological materials is valuable in understanding subsurface fluid movement. This is important for reservoir characterisation, energy exploitation, geological carbon storage (GCS) and groundwater contamination and remediation. Whilst the relationship between pore characteristics and porosity and permeability are well examined, further investigation into the influence of grain characteristics on porosity and permeability would be beneficial due to the inherent relationship between grains and pores. This work aims to determine whether incorporation of grain characteristics into a porosity-permeability model is effective in constraining this relationship. Two fully digital approaches to individual 3D grain analysis based upon watershed segmentation are compared to determine the most effective, yet simple, workflow applicable to core plugs of significantly compacted grains. The identification of an effective segmentation workflow will facilitate future work on similarly complex materials, removing the need for traditional time-consuming and manual techniques. We use the most effective approach of measuring grain shape (sphericity) and size (Feret diameter) alongside an established fully digital workflow to measure porosity and permeability to investigate the impact of grain characteristics on porosity and permeability. We show that grain sphericity and porosity exhibit a positive relationship whereas no such relationship exists with grain size. Measurements of grain sphericity are applied to calculate a Kozeny-Carman (K-C) type porosity-permeability fit which was found to be unsatisfactory, compared to a simpler fit excluding any grain parameters. This is possibly due to the lower sphericity of the studied grains, deviating significantly from the K-C assumption that grains are entirely spherical. The simpler fit is most suitable for the studied materials, showing that inclusion of grain characteristics is not effective for better defining the porosity-permeability relationship in a K-C paradigm for these samples. This highlights the need for a model capable of considering a range of grain sphericities to further constrain the porosity-permeability relationship.
