Aberrant expansion of KRT5<sup>+</sup> basal cells in the distal lung accompanies progressive alveolar epithelial cell loss and tissue remodelling during fibrogenesis in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The mechanisms determining activity of KRT5<sup>+</sup> cells in IPF have not been delineated.
