Surface Modification of ZnO with Sn(IV)-Porphyrin for Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Amaranth Dye.

ABSTRACT: Two hybrid composite photocatalysts, denoted as SnP/AA@ZnO and SnP@ZnO, were fabricated by a reaction of trans-dihydroxo[5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrinato]tin(IV) (SnP) and ZnO with and without pretreatment of adipic acid (AA), respectively. In SnP@ZnO, SnP and ZnO are likely held together by a coordinative interaction between the pyridyl N atoms of SnP and the Zn atoms on the surface of ZnO. In the case of SnP/AA@ZnO, the SnP centers were robustly coupled with ZnO nanoparticles through the AA anchors. SnP/AA@ZnO exhibited largely enhanced photocatalytic activities for the degradation of anionic amaranth (AM) dye under a visible light irradiation, compared to SnP, ZnO, and SnP@ZnO. The degradation efficiency of AM by SnP/AA@ZnO was 95% within 60 min at a rate constant of 0.048 min^-1. The remarkable photocatalytic oxidation performance of SnP/AA@ZnO was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between SnP and ZnO. This study is valuable for the development of highly effective composite photocatalytic systems in advanced oxidation processes and is of importance for the treatment of wastewater containing dyes.

Project description:Photocatalysts suffer from a lack of separation of photogenerated excitons due to the fast recombination of charge carriers, so a strong synergistic effect exhibited by photocatalysts is promising for effective photocatalysis. Herein, we have synthesized efficient visible light functionalized graphene oxide nanosheet (FGS)/ZnO nanocomposite photocatalysts via a simple and economical approach with large scale production for practical applications. A series of nanocomposites (FGS/ZnO NCs) with different amounts by weight of graphene oxide (GO) have been synthesized via a facile solution route followed by calcination under environmental conditions. The phase, purity and morphological studies of the synthesized FGS/ZnO NCs were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The optical properties were studied using UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). XRD results confirm the formation of a pure phase of ZnO in the FGS/ZnO NCs and TEM results show strongly adhered ZnO NPs on the surface of the FGS. DRS results confirm the extension of light absorption in the visible region while PL results confirm the effective separation of charge carriers in 0.09 wt% FGS/ZnO NCs. The synthesized photocatalyst efficiently degrades carcinogenic safranin-T dye under visible light illumination which is reported for the first time using FGS/ZnO nanocomposites. Photocatalytic studies confirm the higher photocatalytic activity of 0.09 wt% FGS/ZnO NCs (about 94.5%) towards the photodegradation of safranin-T dye in aqueous solution under visible light. The improved photocatalytic activity of 0.09 wt% FGS/ZnO NCs can be ascribed to the integrative synergistic effects of the enhanced adsorption capacity of safranin-T dye, effective separation of photogenerated excitons and effective interfacial hybridization of FGS and ZnO NCs. The generation of reactive oxygen species was confirmed using terephthalic acid as a probe molecule and a scavenger test was conducted in presence of histidine.

Project description:In this study, a variety of ZnO-based heterojunctions with disparate wt.% doping of WO3 and BiOI have been prepared for the photodestruction of methyl orange (MO) dye in aqueous solution. The composites were analysed by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, optical studies, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The SEM images revealed non-uniform surfaces of the ZnO-BiOI based composites while mostly nodular morphology was observed for all three samples of ZnO-WO3. As the WO3 loading increased, more clustering was detected. The analysed samples exhibited characteristic peaks representative of the triclinic phase of WO3 and the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO, while the diffractogram observed from the materials displayed distinct peaks corresponding to the crystalline phases of both BiOI and ZnO in their pure forms. Further evidence of the samples' characteristics includes the presence of distinct crystalline patterns without any impurity peaks, a red shift in the absorption spectra of the heterostructure, the detection of only the reference elements, and mostly Type IV isotherm adsorption. This study identified the ZnO-[10%]BiOI and ZnO-[10%]WO3 heterojunctions as the best performing photocatalysts, as MO was completely destroyed in 120 and 90 min, respectively. Thus, confirming 10% wt. as the optimal doping concentration for the best photo-activity in this study. The impact of varying process parameters demonstrates that at an elevated photocatalyst mass of 40 mg, both heterojunctions effectively degraded MO. The photodegradation efficiency of MO was more pronounced in strong acidic conditions (pH 2) when compared to high alkaline conditions (pH 11) for the ZnO-[10%]BiOI heterostructure. However, a decrease in performance was observed for both strong acidic and high alkaline pH values when the ZnO-[10%]WO3 heterostructure was applied. The kinetic analysis of the photodegradation study reveals that all the photodegradation experiments can be represented by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The findings from this investigation propose that the ZnO-[10%]BiOI heterojunction photocatalyst holds significant potential for the effective treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater.
