Experimental signatures of the transition from acoustic plasmon to electronic sound in graphene.

ABSTRACT: Fermi liquids respond differently to perturbations depending on whether their frequency is higher (collisionless regime) or lower (hydrodynamic regime) than the interparticle collision rate. This results in a different phase velocity between the collisionless zero sound and the hydrodynamic first sound. We performed terahertz photocurrent nanoscopy measurements on graphene devices, with a metallic gate close to the graphene layer, to probe the dispersion of propagating acoustic plasmons, the counterpart of sound modes in electronic Fermi liquids. We report the observation of a change in the plasmon phase velocity when the excitation frequency approaches the electron-electron collision rate that is compatible with the transition between the zero and the first sound mode.

Electronic Stethoscope Filtering Mimics the Perceived Sound Characteristics of Acoustic Stethoscope.

Project description:Electronic stethoscopes offer several advantages over conventional acoustic stethoscopes, including noise reduction, increased amplification, and ability to store and transmit sounds. However, the acoustical characteristics of electronic and acoustic stethoscopes can differ significantly, introducing a barrier for clinicians to transition to electronic stethoscopes. This work proposes a method to process lung sounds recorded by an electronic stethoscope, such that the sounds are perceived to have been captured by an acoustic stethoscope. The proposed method calculates an electronic-to-acoustic stethoscope filter by measuring the difference between the average frequency responses of an acoustic and an electronic stethoscope to multiple lung sounds. To validate the method, a change detection experiment was conducted with 51 medical professionals to compare filtered electronic, unfiltered electronic, and acoustic stethoscope lung sounds. Participants were asked to detect when transitions occurred in sounds comprising several sections of the three types of recordings. Transitions between the filtered electronic and acoustic stethoscope sections were detected, on average, by chance (sensitivity index equal to zero) and also detected significantly less than transitions between the unfiltered electronic and acoustic stethoscope sections ( ), demonstrating the effectiveness of the method to filter electronic stethoscopes to mimic an acoustic stethoscope. This processing could incentivize clinicians to adopt electronic stethoscopes by providing a means to shift between the sound characteristics of acoustic and electronic stethoscopes in a single device, allowing for a faster transition to new technology and greater appreciation for the electronic sound quality.

Topological signatures in the electronic structure of graphene spirals.

Project description:Topology is familiar mostly from mathematics, but also natural sciences have found its concepts useful. Those concepts have been used to explain several natural phenomena in biology and physics, and they are particularly relevant for the electronic structure description of topological insulators and graphene systems. Here, we introduce topologically distinct graphene forms - graphene spirals - and employ density-functional theory to investigate their geometric and electronic properties. We found that the spiral topology gives rise to an intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit splitting. Through a Hamiltonian constrained by space curvature, graphene spirals have topologically protected states due to time-reversal symmetry. In addition, we argue that the synthesis of such graphene spirals is feasible and can be achieved through advanced bottom-up experimental routes that we indicate in this work.

Modulating Sound with Acoustic Metafiber Bundles.

Project description:Acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces provide great flexibility for manipulating sound waves and promise unprecedented functionality, ranging from transformation acoustics, acoustic cloaking, acoustic imaging to acoustic rerouting. However, the design of artificial structures with both broad bandwidth and multifunctionality remains challenging with traditional design approaches. Here we present a design and realization of a broadband acoustic metafiber bundle. Very different from previously reported acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces, not only the metafiber structure is simple, flexible and tunable, but also the metafiber bundle has the advantages of broad bandwidth, high transmission, no resonance-induced energy loss and unchangeable output wavefront owing to eigenmodes in the passbands of the metafiber. Besides, it could also achieve arbitrary complex modulations of cylindrical and plane acoustic wavefronts. The metafiber bundles realize the exciting multifunctionality of both acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces in a broad frequency range, which provides diverse routes to design novel acoustic devices with versatile applications.

What drives sound symbolism? Different acoustic cues underlie sound-size and sound-shape mappings.

Project description:Sound symbolism refers to the non-arbitrary mappings that exist between phonetic properties of speech sounds and their meaning. Despite there being an extensive literature on the topic, the acoustic features and psychological mechanisms that give rise to sound symbolism are not, as yet, altogether clear. The present study was designed to investigate whether different sets of acoustic cues predict size and shape symbolism, respectively. In two experiments, participants judged whether a given consonant-vowel speech sound was large or small, round or angular, using a size or shape scale. Visual size judgments were predicted by vowel formant F1 in combination with F2, and by vowel duration. Visual shape judgments were, however, predicted by formants F2 and F3. Size and shape symbolism were thus not induced by a common mechanism, but rather were distinctly affected by acoustic properties of speech sounds. These findings portray sound symbolism as a process that is not based merely on broad categorical contrasts, such as round/unround and front/back vowels. Rather, individuals seem to base their sound-symbolic judgments on specific sets of acoustic cues, extracted from speech sounds, which vary across judgment dimensions.

Harmonizing sound and light: X-ray imaging unveils acoustic signatures of stochastic inter-regime instabilities during laser melting.

Project description:Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing technique involving complex interplays between vapor, liquid, and solid phases. Despite LPBF's advantageous capabilities compared to conventional manufacturing methods, the underlying physical phenomena can result in inter-regime instabilities followed by transitions between conduction and keyhole melting regimes - leading to defects. We investigate these issues through operando synchrotron X-ray imaging synchronized with acoustic emission recording, during the remelting processes of LPBF-produced thin walls, monitoring regime changes occurring under constant laser processing parameters. The collected data show an increment in acoustic signal amplitude when switching from conduction to keyhole regime, which we correlate to changes in laser absorptivity. Moreover, a full correlation between X-ray imaging and the acoustic signals permits the design of a simple filtering algorithm to predict the melting regimes. As a result, conduction, stable keyhole, and unstable keyhole regimes are identified with a time resolution of 100 µs, even under rapid transitions, providing a straightforward method to accurately detect undesired processing regimes without the use of artificial intelligence.

Acoustic communication and sound degradation: how do the individual signatures of male and female zebra finch calls transmit over distance?

Project description:BackgroundAssessing the active space of the various types of information encoded by songbirds' vocalizations is important to address questions related to species ecology (e.g. spacing of individuals), as well as social behavior (e.g. territorial and/or mating strategies). Up to now, most of the previous studies have investigated the degradation of species-specific related information (species identity), and there is a gap of knowledge of how finer-grained information (e.g. individual identity) can transmit through the environment. Here we studied how the individual signature coded in the zebra finch long distance contact call degrades with propagation.MethodologyWe performed sound transmission experiments of zebra finches' distance calls at various propagation distances. The propagated calls were analyzed using discriminant function analyses on a set of analytical parameters describing separately the spectral and temporal envelopes, as well as on a complete spectrographic representation of the signals.Results/conclusionWe found that individual signature is remarkably resistant to propagation as caller identity can be recovered even at distances greater than a hundred meters. Male calls show stronger discriminability at long distances than female calls, and this difference can be explained by the more pronounced frequency modulation found in their calls. In both sexes, individual information is carried redundantly using multiple acoustical features. Interestingly, features providing the highest discrimination at short distances are not the same ones that provide the highest discrimination at long distances.

Programmable Acoustic Holography using Medium-Sound-Speed Modulation.

Project description:Acoustic holography offers the ability to generate designed acoustic fields to manipulate microscale objects. However, the static nature or large aperture sizes of 3D printed acoustic holographic phase plates limits the ability to rapidly alter generated fields. In this work， a programmable acoustic holography approach is demonstrated by which multiple discrete or continuously variable acoustic targets can be created. Here, the holographic phase plate encodes multiple images, where the desired field is produced by modifying the sound speed of an intervening fluid media. Its flexibility is demonstrated in generating various acoustic patterns, including continuous line segments, discrete letters and numbers, using this method as a sound speed indicator and fluid identification tool. This programmable acoustic holography approach has the advantages of generating reconfigurable and designed acoustic fields, with broad potential in microfluidics, cell/tissue engineering, real-time sensing, and medical ultrasound.

Plasmon induced thermoelectric effect in graphene.

Project description:Graphene has emerged as a promising material for optoelectronics due to its potential for ultrafast and broad-band photodetection. The photoresponse of graphene junctions is characterized by two competing photocurrent generation mechanisms: a conventional photovoltaic effect and a more dominant hot-carrier-assisted photothermoelectric (PTE) effect. The PTE effect is understood to rely on variations in the Seebeck coefficient through the graphene doping profile. A second PTE effect can occur across a homogeneous graphene channel in the presence of an electronic temperature gradient. Here, we study the latter effect facilitated by strongly localised plasmonic heating of graphene carriers in the presence of nanostructured electrical contacts resulting in electronic temperatures of the order of 2000 K. At certain conditions, the plasmon-induced PTE photocurrent contribution can be isolated. In this regime, the device effectively operates as a sensitive electronic thermometer and as such represents an enabling technology for development of hot carrier based plasmonic devices.

Electronic detection of dsDNA transition from helical to zipper conformation using graphene nanopores.

Project description:Mechanical manipulation of DNA by forced extension can lead double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) to structurally transform from a helical form to a linear zipper-like form. By employing classical molecular dynamics and quantum mechanical nonequilibrium Green's function-based transport simulations, we show the ability of graphene nanopores to discern different dsDNA conformations, in a helical to zipper transition, using transverse electronic conductance. In particular, conductance oscillations due to helical dsDNA vanish as dsDNA extends from a helical form to a zipper form while it is transported through the nanopore. The predicted ability to detect conformational changes in dsDNA via transverse electronic conductance can widen the potential use of graphene-based nanosensors for DNA detection.

Signatures of Floquet electronic steady states in graphene under continuous-wave mid-infrared irradiation.

Project description:Light-induced phenomena in materials can exhibit exotic behavior that extends beyond equilibrium properties, offering new avenues for understanding and controlling electronic phases. So far, non-equilibrium phenomena in solids have been predominantly explored using femtosecond laser pulses, which generate transient, ultra-fast dynamics. Here, we investigate the steady non-equilibrium regime in graphene induced by a continuous-wave (CW) mid-infrared laser. Our transport measurements reveal signatures of a long-lived Floquet phase, where a non-equilibrium electronic population is stabilized by the interplay between coherent photoexcitation and incoherent phonon cooling. The observation of non-equilibrium steady states using CW lasers stimulates further investigations of low-temperature Floquet phenomena towards Floquet engineering of steady-state phases of matter.
