Project description:This paper presents the synthesis of a coumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene (1) using a cascade thermolysis/Michael reaction. The influence of the hydrogen bonding system on the conformational rigidity and cyclochirality of the coumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene was discussed; these properties depended on the proton-donor-acceptor properties of the solvent. Significant differences, which depended on the environment, in the coumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene fluorescence were observed and discussed.

Project description:Directional self-assembly of conformationally well-defined complexes in polar environment is still a major challenge in supramolecular chemistry. In the present study we demonstrate that resorcin[4]arene sulfonic acid (RSA) interacts with chiral amines (amino acid derivatives and aminocavitands) to form inclusion complexes and capsules based on electrostatic interactions. The complexes were characterized by circular dichroism and DOSY NMR spectroscopy. Chirality transfer from amines onto a resorcinarene skeleton was manifested by the appearance of signals in CD spectra and diastereotopic splitting in NMR spectra. The complexes proved to be thermodynamically stable in methanol, but DMSO and methanol/water mixtures were found to be highly disintegrative for these complexes. This result is quite non-intuitive and worth attention in the context of formation of supramolecular complexes in polar environment, for which DMSO is most often a first-choice solvent.

Project description:Resorcin[4]arenes (R[4]A) are a group of macrocyclic compounds whose peculiar feature is the presence of eight hydroxyl groups in their structure. The directional formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds with their participation leads to the formation of a cyclochiral racemic mixture of these compounds. Their stability strongly depends on the substituent and especially the environment in which they are located. The paper discusses the cyclochiral nature of aminomethylene derivatives of R[4]A (AMD-R[4]A). Their cyclochiral rigidity in non-polar solvents has been shown. The influence of the size of the alkyl groups in the amino substituents of AMD-R[4]A on their cyclochiral nature was noted. To calculate the reaction paths for their racemization, the nudged elastic band (NEB) method was employed using the semi-empirical DFT (GFN1-xTB) approach. The calculated activation barrier energies for their racemization in chloroform, obtained through various semi-empirical quantum chemical methods (SE), Hartree-Fock (HF), and density functionals theory (DFT), show good correlation with experimental observations. Among the tested methods, the B38LYP-D4 method is highly recommended due to its fast computational speed and accuracy, which is comparable to the time-consuming double-hybrid DH-revDSD-PBEP86 approach.

Project description:Herein, we present 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as an efficient solvent for synthesizing resorcin[n]arenes in the presence of catalytic amounts of HCl at ambient temperature and within minutes. Remarkably, resorcinols with electron-withdrawing groups and halogens, which are reported in the literature as the most challenging precursors in this cyclization, are tolerated. This method leads to a variety of 2-substituted resorcin[n]arenes in a single synthetic step with isolated yields up to 98%.

Project description:Controlling the self-assembly of molecules in water is difficult because the small size, polarity, and hydrogen bond donating and accepting properties of water attenuate most non-covalent interactions. Here we describe how resorcinarene 1, with pyridinium pendent groups, assembles in water to form head-to-tail assemblies. These small supramolecular polymers form because they offer greater stabilization than any latent head-to-head assembly of resorcinarenes to form dimeric (or hexameric) containers. Instead, the resorcinarene bowl - particularly if negatively charged - is a good host for the pyridinium pendent groups of a second resorcinarene. Alternatively, resorcinarene 1 is also a good host for complexing anions and cations of any added salt. In combination therefore, host 1 possesses a rich repertoire of supramolecular properties that is dependent on the ionic strength and the nature of salts, pH, and the concentration of the host. These findings provide new information about controlling the self-assembly of resorcinarenes in water.

Project description:A variety of method and basis set combinations has been evaluated for monooxorhenium(V) complexes with N, O, P, S, Cl, and Se donor atoms. The geometries and energies obtained are compared to both high-level computations and literature structures. These calculations show that the PBE0 method outperforms the B3LYP method with respect to both structure and energetics. The combination of 6-31G** basis set on the nonmetal atoms and LANL2TZ effective core potential on the rhenium center gives reliable equilibrium structures with minimal computational resources for both model and literature compounds. Single-point energy calculations at the PBE0/LANL2TZ,6-311+G* level of theory are recommended for energetics.

Project description:In this study, the synthesis and structure of 4-aminocoumarin derivatives of resorcin[4]arene were investigated. Spectroscopic analysis and quantum mechanical calculations showed that this molecule undertakes a crown-in conformation in chloroform. The conformations of the aminocoumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene were compared with a hydroxycoumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene, and the effect of the substituent on the conformational selectivity of the coumarin derivatives of resorcin[4]arene was demonstrated. Both UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy for the coumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene (3) were performed, and a strong fluorescence quenching of derivative 3 compared to 4-aminocoumarin was observed.

Project description:By utilizing a novel octacarboxylate-functionalized resorcin[4]arene as organic linkers, three lanthanide-coordination polymers, namely, [(CH3)2NH2][Ln2(HL)(H2O)7]·2H2O (Ln = Tb (1), Eu (2) and Gd (3), H8L = 2,8,14,20-tetra-pentyl-4,6,10,12,16,18,22,24-octa-carboxymethoxy-resorcin[4]arene) have been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Isostructural 1-3 display unique two dimensional sandwich-based layers built with Ln3+ cations and bowl-shaped HL7- anions. Remarkably, 1 and 2 produce intensive green and red emissions respectively and long lifetimes thanks to the antenna effect of HL7- anions. The energy level testing of 3 indicates that the newly designed ligand H8L has a very efficient intersystem crossing process. More importantly, luminescent investigations reveal that 1 and 2 can selectively detect N,N'-dimethylformamide and Fe3+ ions with turn-on-type and turn-off-type responses, respectively.

Project description:Water-soluble tetrasulfonate resorcin[4]arene (1a and 1c) and pyrogallol[4]arene (1b) macrocycles were synthesized and investigated for their dispersing properties in cement-based mortars. Mortar tests clearly show that these polyhydroxylated macrocycles (nonpolymeric) work as cement dispersants. Setting time determinations indicate that the macrocycles 1a and 1b show a retarding effect that is reminiscent of the behavior of superplasticizers (SPs) functionalized with polyhydroxylated β-CDs. Finally, the addition of sulfate anions to the cement paste does not affect the dispersing abilities of 1b, probably due to the sulfate anion capture by H-bonding interactions with its OH groups at the upper rim.

Project description:In the present work, we report the development of a rapid, efficient, and solvent-free procedure for the N-methylation of secondary amines under mechanochemical conditions. After optimization of the milling parameters, a vibrational ball mill was used to synthesize 26 tertiary N-methylated amine derivatives in a short time of 20 min (30 Hz frequency) and high yields ranging from 78 to 95%. An exception was compounds having a hydroxyl group in their structure, for which a decrease in reaction efficiency was observed. During our research, we investigated alternate reaction selectivity occurring in compounds able to form ring closure products that are 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine derivatives instead of N-methylated products. The liquid-assisted grinding technique has been applied using formalin as a methylating agent and sodium triacetoxyborohydride as a reducing agent in a reductive amination reaction.
