Project description:A highly sensitive and selective formaldehyde sensor was successfully fabricated using hybrid materials of nitrogen-doped double-walled carbon nanotubes (N-DWCNTs) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and N-DWCNTs were produced by high-vacuum chemical vapor deposition using ethanol and benzylamine, respectively. Purified DWCNTs and N-DWCNTs were dropped separately onto the sensing substrate. PVP was then dropped onto pre-dropped DWCNT and N-DWCNTs (hereafter referred to as PVP/DWCNTs and PVP/N-DWCNTs, respectively). As-fabricated sensors were used to find 1,2-dichloroethane, dichloromethane, formaldehyde and toluene vapors in parts per million (ppm) at room temperature for detection measurement. The sensor response of N-DWCNTs, PVP/DWCNTs and PVP/N-DWCNTs sensors show a high response to formaldehyde but a low response to 1,2-dichloroethane, dichloromethane and toluene. Remarkably, PVP/N-DWCNTs sensors respond sensitively and selectively towards formaldehyde vapor, which is 15 times higher than when using DWCNTs sensors. This improvement could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the polymer swelling and nitrogen-sites in the N-DWCNTs. The limit of detection (LOD) of PVP/N-DWCNTs was 15 ppm, which is 34-fold higher than when using DWCNTs with a LOD of 506 ppm. This study demonstrated the high sensitivity and selectivity for formaldehyde-sensing applications of high-performance PVP/N-DWCNTs hybrid materials.

Project description:In a recent paper published in Cell Research, a cryo-EM structure reveals the interface between DNA-PKcs and the Ku70/80:DNA complex, together forming the DNA-dependent protein kinase holoenzyme in non-homologous DNA end joining. Insight from this structure suggests how an allosteric rearrangement of DNA-PKcs driven by Ku70/80:DNA binding regulates kinase activity in this largest member of a family of structurally homologous phosphoinositide 3-kinase-related protein kinases that includes mTOR, ATR, and ATM.

Project description:Veterinary drugs are used for disease control in bovines Their presence at acceptable levels is a cause of concern for consumers and control agencies, as well as being a limitation for accessing international markets. The objective of this research was to evaluate the presence of residues of veterinary drugs and heavy metals in meat cuts from the Urabá region in Colombia. From a total of 80 samples of meat cuts from the loin and neck, we determined the presence of 29 veterinary drug residues and of cadmium and lead. The drug residues were quantified by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Heavy metals were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption. As a result, all evaluated samples complied with Colombian and European regulations for drug residues and heavy metals. These results demonstrate good veterinary practices used for bovines raised in this part of Colombia, and they represent an export opportunity and an opening for new markets that can be enhanced by the implementation of a meat quality seal from this region.

Project description:Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) is FDA-approved for the clinical management of liquid malignancies, however, its use for solid malignancies remains a challenge. The putative benefit of RIT lies in selective targeting of antigens expressed on the tumor surface using monoclonal antibodies, to systemically deliver cytotoxic radionuclides. The past several decades yielded dramatic improvements in the quality, quantity, recent commercial availability of alpha-, beta- and Auger Electron-emitting therapeutic radiometals. Investigators have created new or improved existing bifunctional chelators. These bifunctional chelators bind radiometals and can be coupled to antigen-specific antibodies. In this review, we discuss approaches to develop radiometal-based RITs, including the selection of radiometals, chelators and antibody platforms (i.e. full-length, F(ab')2, Fab, minibodies, diabodies, scFv-Fc and nanobodies). We cite examples of the performance of RIT in the clinic, describe challenges to its implementation, and offer insights to address gaps toward translation.

Project description:Oncolytic virotherapy with intratumoral engineered type-1 herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been proven safe with promising efficacy in recent clinical trials for treatment of both pediatric and adult high-grade glioma. However, this approach excludes patients with tumors in surgically inaccessible and/or eloquent brain regions. Current delivery methods are also unable to access/treat those patients with metastatic disease in the spinal cord and/or leptomeningeal disease. A recent preclinical study has paved the way for clinical translation of intraventricular administration of oHSV by identifying and mitigating the toxicity associated with this route for therapeutic benefit in murine models of disseminated medulloblastoma. This work may ultimately allow for targeting of intractable disease and provides a feasible option for the repetitive dosing of clinically relevant immunovirotherapy, G207.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted attention from researchers owing to their outstanding properties, such as chemical inertness, stable photoluminescence (PL), biocompatibility, and low toxicity, which make them suitable for bioimaging, optoelectronic device, sensor, and others. At present, there are several studies that report the effect of the size of GQDs on their properties; however, but there is only a few studies that report the effect of the thickness of GQDs on their properties. It may be attributed to the difficulty to obtain the accurate information on the thickness of GQDs. In this study, we demonstrate the facile and one-step hydrothermal synthesis of monolayer and bilayer n-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) using sucrose as a carbon source. UV-visible and PL spectra show the quantum yield of the NGQDs is 4.9 times higher than that of the GQDs. Besides, the NGQDs exhibit sensitive PL for Ag+ ions. In addition, the thickness distribution and interlayer spacing of NGQDs are revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) curve fitting, which is calculated using a simple and accurate equation. The information on the structure of the NGQDs from the XRD curve fitting is in a good agreement with the Raman results. This accurate estimation of the structure of GQDs by XRD curve fitting using the simple equation may extend the limits of GDQ study.

Project description:The Mn + 1AXn phases (M = early transition metal; A = group A element and X = C and N) are materials exhibiting many important metallic and ceramic properties. In the present study powder processing experiments and density functional theory calculations are employed in parallel to examine formation of Zr2(Al1-xBix)C (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). Here we show that Zr2(Al1-xBix)C, and particularly with x ≈ 0.58, can be formed from powders even though the end members Zr2BiC and Zr2AlC seemingly cannot. This represents a significant extension of the MAX phase family, as this is the first report of a bismuth-based MAX phase.
