Efficient oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides catalyzed by heterogeneous Zr-containing polyoxometalate grafted on graphene oxide.

ABSTRACT: In this study, a tri-component composite named Zr/SiW₁₂/GO was meticulously prepared through an ultrasonic-assisted method. This composite incorporates zirconium nanoparticles (Lewis acid), a negatively charged Keggin type polyoxometalate, and graphene oxide, and serves as a remarkable heterogeneous catalyst. The Keggin component plays multiple roles as reducing, encapsulating, and bridging agents, resulting in a cooperative effect among the three components that significantly enhances the catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of Zr/SiW₁₂/GO was thoroughly investigated in the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under mild conditions, employing H₂O₂ as the oxidant. Remarkably, this composite exhibited exceptional stability and could be effortlessly recovered and reused up to four times without any noticeable loss in its catalytic activity.

Project description:An efficient and environmentally friendly method was designed for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides with a recyclable, carbon-skeleton-based heterogeneous catalyst developed by titanium sulfate [Ti(SO4)2] mineralization on the surface of graphene oxide foam [Ti(SO4)2@GOF] by using 30 wt% H2O2 as oxidant. Several different substituted sulfides were examined to explore the scope of substrates of the selective oxidation. The excellent reusability and durability of Ti(SO4)2@GOF was demonstrated by recycling experiments and the catalyst was further applied in the preparation of pantoprazole sodium in a one-pot process.

Expanding the Use of Benzothioxanthene Imides to Photochemistry: Eco-Friendly Aerobic Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides.

Project description:The sulfoxide moiety is one of the most commonly utilized groups in pharmaceutical and industrial chemistry. The need for sustainability and easy accessibility to sulfoxide moieties is deemed necessary, due to its ubiquity in natural products and potentially pharmaceutically active compounds. In this context, we report herein a sustainable, aerobic and environmentally friendly photochemical protocol based on the use of a benzothioxathene imide as the photocatalyst to selectively oxidize sulfides under mild irradiation (456 nm), in very low catalyst loading (0.01 mol %) and on water. In addition, to demonstrate the compatibility of our protocol with wide scope of substrates, the latter was successfully applied to the synthesis of the biologically-active Sulforaphane and Modafinil.

Tertiary amine mediated aerobic oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides by visible-light photoredox catalysis on TiO2.

Project description:The selective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides receives much attention due to industrial and biological applications. However, the realization of this reaction with molecular oxygen at room temperature, which is of importance towards green and sustainable chemistry, remains challenging. Herein, we develop a strategy to achieve the aerobic oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides by exploring the synergy between a tertiary amine and titanium dioxide via visible-light photoredox catalysis. Specifically, titanium dioxide can interact with triethylamine (TEA) to form a visible-light harvesting surface complex, preluding the ensuing selective redox reaction. Moreover, TEA, whose stability was demonstrated by a turnover number of 32, plays a critical role as a redox mediator by shuttling electrons during the oxidation of sulfide. This work suggests that the addition of a redox mediator is highly functional in establishing visible-light-induced reactions via heterogeneous photoredox catalysis.

Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Phosphoric Acids for the Photo-Oxidation of Sulfides.

Project description:Heterogeneous Brønsted acidic catalysts such as phosphoric acids are the conventional activators for organic transformations. However, the photocatalytic performance of these catalysts is still rarely explored. Herein, a novel Zr-based metal-organic framework Zr-MOF-P with phosphoric acids as a heterogeneous photocatalyst has been fabricated, which shows high selectivity and reactivity towards the photo-oxidation of sulfides under white light illumination. A mechanism study indicates that the selective oxygenation of sulfides occurs with triplet oxygen rather than common reactive oxygen species (ROS). When Zr-MOF-P is irradiated, the hydroxyl group of phosphoric acid is converted into oxygen radical, which takes an electron from the sulfides, and then the activated substrates react with the triplet oxygen to form sulfoxides, avoiding the destruction of the catalysts and endowing the reaction with high substrate compatibility and fine recyclability.

One-pot thiol-free synthetic approach to sulfides, and sulfoxides selectively.

Project description:A facile and efficient thiol-free one-pot method for direct synthesis of sulfides and sulfoxides under green conditions without using any metal catalyst is reported. For this purpose, we used benzyl bromides as starting materials in the presence of potassium thioacetate (PTA) and Oxone® which are low-cost, and readily accessible chemicals. This method is highly compatible with a variety of functional groups and delivered a series of sulfides, bis-sulfides, and sulfoxides in good yields. The selective formation of sulfoxides over sulfones is discussed via a mechanism.

Visible light sensitizer-catalyzed highly selective photo oxidation from thioethers into sulfoxides under aerobic condition.

Project description:We report herein a visible light sensitizer-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of thioethers, affording sulfoxides in good to excellent yields. The loading of the catalyst was as low as 0.1 mol%. The selectivity was excellent. Mechanism studies showed both singlet oxygen and superoxide radical anion were likely involved in this transformation.

Ni-Catalyzed Borylation of Aryl Sulfoxides.

Project description:A nickel/N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalytic system has been developed for the borylation of aryl sulfoxides with B2 (neop)2 (neop=neopentyl glycolato). A wide range of aryl sulfoxides with different electronic and steric properties were converted into the corresponding arylboronic esters in good yields. The regioselective borylation of unsymmetric diaryl sulfoxides was also feasible leading to borylation of the sterically less encumbered aryl substituent. Competition experiments demonstrated that an electron-deficient aryl moiety reacts preferentially. The origin of the selectivity in the Ni-catalyzed borylation of electronically biased unsymmetrical diaryl sulfoxide lies in the oxidative addition step of the catalytic cycle, as oxidative addition of methoxyphenyl 4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl sulfoxide to the Ni(0) complex occurs selectively to give the structurally characterized complex trans-[Ni(ICy)2 (4-CF3 -C6 H4 ){(SO)-4-MeO-C6 H4 }] 4. For complex 5, the isomer trans-[Ni(ICy)2 (C6 H5 )(OSC6 H5 )] 5-I was structurally characterized in which the phenyl sulfinyl ligand is bound via the oxygen atom to nickel. In solution, the complex trans-[Ni(ICy)2 (C6 H5 )(OSC6 H5 )] 5-I is in equilibrium with the S-bonded isomer trans-[Ni(ICy)2 (C6 H5 )(SOC6 H5 )] 5, as shown by NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations reveal that these isomers are separated by a mere 0.3 kJ/mol (M06/def2-TZVP-level of theory) and connected via a transition state trans-[Ni(ICy)2 (C6 H5 )(η2 -{SO}-C6 H5 )], which lies only 10.8 kcal/mol above 5.

Continuous Bioinspired Oxidation of Sulfides.

Project description:A simple, efficient, and selective oxidation under flow conditions of sulfides into their corresponding sulfoxides and sulfones is reported herein, using as a catalyst perselenic acid generated in situ by the oxidation of selenium (IV) oxide in a diluted aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide as the final oxidant. The scope of the proposed methodology was investigated using aryl alkyl sulfides, aryl vinyl sulfides, and dialkyl sulfides as substrates, evidencing, in general, a good applicability. The scaled-up synthesis of (methylsulfonyl)benzene was also demonstrated, leading to its gram-scale preparation.

Ternary Porphyrinato Hf(IV) and Zr(IV) - Polyoxometalate Complexes.

Project description:We report a facile, high yield synthesis and characterization of discrete, ternary porphyrin-metal-polyoxometalate (Por-M-POM) complexes where a group (IV) transition metal ion is bound both to the porphyrin core and to the lacunary site of a Keggin POM, PW(11)O(39) (-7). The remarkably robust complexes exploit the fact that Hf(IV) and Zr(IV) are 7-8 coordinate and reside outside the plane of the porphyrin macrocycle, thus enabling the simultaneous coordination to meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) or meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP) and to the defect site in the Keggin framework. The physical properties of the (TPP)Hf(PW(11)O(39))[TBA](5), (TPyP)Hf(PW(11)O(39))[TBA](5), and (TPP)Zr(PW(11)O(39))[TBA](5) complexes are similar because the metal ions have similar oxidation states, and coordination chemistry.This architecture couples the photonic properties of the porphyrin to the POM because the metal ion is incorporated into both frameworks. Thus the ternary complexes can serve as a basis for the characterization of Hf(IV) and Zr(IV) porphyrins bound to oxide surfaces via the group (IV) metal ions. The Hf(Por) and Zr(Por) bind strongly to TiO(2) nanoparticles and indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces, but significantly less binds to crystalline SiO(2) or TiO(2) surfaces. Together, the strong binding of the metalloporphyrins to the POM, nanoparticles, and the ITO surfaces, and paucity of binding to crystalline surfaces, suggests that the 3-4 open coordination sites on the Hf(Por) and Zr(Por) are predominantly bound at surface defect sites.

Investigation of the titanium-mediated catalytic enantioselective oxidation of aryl benzyl sulfides containing heterocyclic groups.

Project description:Our enantioselective oxidation protocol, based upon hydroperoxides in the presence of a titanium/(S,S)-hydrobenzoin catalyst, was tested for the first time with aryl benzyl sulfides containing heterocyclic moieties (2-thienyl, 2-pyridyl and benzimidazolyl), two of them being connected with the blockbuster omeprazole drug. Good yields of enantiopure sulfoxides were obtained in most cases. Two exceptions of unsatisfactory enantioselectivity in the oxidation of benzimidazolyl sulfides are reported. However, one of them was solved by crystallization of an enantio-enriched mixture. The present work was supported also by X-ray diffraction analysis of some synthesized sulfoxides and by energetic calculation of the crystal structures. The unexpected result is that the crystal structures of the racemic mixture of the two problematic benzimidazolyl sulfoxides are composed of separate enantiomers (a conglomerate), an interesting result that could be exploited in the future for the separation of the enantiomers of these sulfoxides.
