Binuclear Complexes Supported by a Tetrapyridyl Ligand with a Bending Anthraquinodimethane Linker.

ABSTRACT: A tetrapyridyl ligand with a bending anthraquinodimethane linker has been synthesized, and its complexation with coinage metals has been examined. The treatment of the ligand with Ag(I) and Au(I) cations afforded binuclear complexes, wherein the two metal centers were in close proximity to the inside space of the ligand. X-ray analyses corroborated with theoretical calculations indicated that the ligand has reasonable flexibility toward a bending deformation of the linker moiety to provide a ligand pocket suitable for the proximal binuclear complexes, even though such deformations accompany a non-negligible amount of energetic cost. On the other hand, treatment with 2 equiv of Cu(I) salt afforded a binuclear complex, in which both copper atoms were coordinated at the periphery of the ligand.

Ligand-Centered Triplet Diradical Supported by a Binuclear Palladium(II) Dipyrrindione.

Project description:Oligopyrroles form a versatile class of redox-active ligands and electron reservoirs. Although the stabilization of radicals within oligopyrrolic π systems is more common for macrocyclic ligands, bidentate dipyrrindiones are emerging as compact platforms for one-electron redox chemistry in transition-metal complexes. We report the synthesis of a bis(aqua) palladium(II) dipyrrindione complex and its deprotonation-driven dimerization to form a hydroxo-bridged binuclear complex in the presence of water or triethylamine. Electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and computational analyses of the binuclear complex indicate the accessibility of two quasi-reversible ligand-centered reduction processes. The product of a two-electron chemical reduction by cobaltocene was isolated and characterized. In the solid state, this cobaltocenium salt features a folded dianionic complex that maintains the hydroxo bridges between the divalent palladium centers. X-band and Q-band EPR spectroscopic experiments and DFT computational analysis allow assignment of the dianionic species as a diradical with spin density almost entirely located on the two dipyrrindione ligands. As established from the EPR temperature dependence, the associated exchange coupling is weak and antiferromagnetic (J ≈ -2.5 K), which results in a predominantly triplet state at the temperatures at which the measurements have been performed.

Complexes of Dichlorogermylene with Phosphine/Sulfoxide-Supported Carbone as Ligand.

Project description:Due to their remarkable electronic features, recent years have witnessed the emergence of carbones L2C, which consist in two donating L ligands coordinating a central carbon atom bearing two lone pairs. In this context, the phosphine/sulfoxide-supported carbone 4 exhibits a strong nucleophilic character, and here, we describe its ability to coordinate dichlorogermylene. Two original stable coordination complexes were obtained and fully characterized in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. At 60 °C, in the presence of 4, the Ge(II)-complex 5 undergoes a slow isomerization that transforms the bis-ylide ligand into an yldiide.

Reduced Arene Complexes of Hafnium Supported by a Triamidoamine Ligand.

Project description:A series of hafnium complexes with a reduced arene of the general formula [K(L)][Hf(Xy-N3 N)(arene)] (Xy-N3 N={(3,5-Me2 C6 H3 )NCH2 CH2 }3 N3- , L=THF, 18-crown-6; arene=C10 H8 2- , C14 H10 2- ) mimic the chemistry of hafnium in its formal oxidation state +II. All compounds were obtained upon reduction of the chlorido complex [HfCl(Xy-N3 N)(thf)] with two equivalents of potassium naphthalenide or anthracenide. The reducing nature and the basicity of the reduced anthracene ligand were explored in the reaction of benzonitrile and azobenzene, and by deprotonation of tert-butylacetylene, respectively. The reduction of benzonitrile provides an initial double nitrile insertion product under kinetic control that rearranges after extrusion of one of the inserted nitriles to a hafnium imido complex as the thermodynamic product. The reduction of azobenzene resulted in a diphenylhydrazido(2-) complex. Treatment of terminal alkynes with the anthracene or diphenylhydrazido(2-) complex led to the selective protonation of the corresponding dianionic ligand.

Chemistry of nitrosyliron complexes supported by a β-diketiminate ligand.

Project description:Several nitrosyl complexes of Fe and Co have been prepared using the sterically hindered Ar-nacnac ligand (Ar-nacnac = anion of [(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)NC(Me)](2)CH). The dinitrosyliron complexes [Fe(NO)(2)(Ar-nacnac)] (1) and (Bu(4)N)[Fe(NO)(2)(Ar-nacnac)] (2) react with [Fe(III)(TPP)Cl] (TPP = tetraphenylporphine dianion) to generate [Fe(II)(NO)(TPP)] and the corresponding mononitrosyliron complexes. The factors governing NO transfer with dinitrosyliron complexes (DNICs) 1 and 2 are evaluated, together with the chemistry of the related mononitrosyliron complex, [Fe(NO)Br(Ar-nacnac)] (4). The synthesis and properties of the related cobalt dinitrosyl [Co(NO)(2)(Ar-nacnac)] (3) is also discussed for comparison to DNICs 1 and 2. The solid-state structures of several of these compounds as determined by X-ray crystallography are reported.

DNA-Binding and Anticancer Activity of Binuclear Gold(I) Alkynyl Complexes with a Phenanthrenyl Bridging Ligand.

Project description:3,6-Diethynyl-9,10-diethoxyphenanthrene (4) was synthesized from phenanthrene and employed in the synthesis of the binuclear gold(I) alkynyl complexes (R3P)Au(C≡C-3-[C14H6-9,10-diethoxy]-6-C≡C)Au(PR3) (R = Ph (5a), Cy (5b)). The diyne 4 and complexes 5a and 5b were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. UV-Vis spectroscopy studies of the metal complexes and precursor diyne show strong p à p* transitions in the near UV region that red shift by ca. 50 nm upon coordination at the gold centers. The emission spectrum of 4 shows an intense fluorescence band centered at 420 nm which red shifts, slightly upon coordination of 4 to gold. Binding studies of 4, 5a, and 5b against calf thymus DNA were carried out, revealing that 4, 5a, and 5b have >40% stronger binding affinities than the commonly used intercalating agent ethidium bromide. The molecular docking scores of 4, 5a, and 5b with B-DNA suggest a similar trend in behavior to that observed in the DNA-binding study. Unlike the ligand 4, promising anticancer properties for 5a and 5b were observed against several cell lines; the DNA binding capability of the precursor alkyne was maintained, and its anticancer efficacy enhanced by the gold centers. Such phenanthrenyl complexes could be promising candidates in certain biological applications because the two components (phenanthrenyl bridge and metal centers) can be altered independently to improve the targeting of the complex, as well as the biological and physicochemical properties.

Manganese-Hydroxido Complexes Supported by a Urea/Phosphinic Amide Tripodal Ligand.

Project description:Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) within the secondary coordination sphere are often invoked as essential noncovalent interactions that lead to productive chemistry in metalloproteins. Incorporating these types of effects within synthetic systems has proven a challenge in molecular design that often requires the use of rigid organic scaffolds to support H-bond donors or acceptors. We describe the preparation and characterization of a new hybrid tripodal ligand ([H2pout]3-) that contains two monodeprotonated urea groups and one phosphinic amide. The urea groups serve as H-bond donors, while the phosphinic amide group serves as a single H-bond acceptor. The [H2pout]3- ligand was utilized to stabilize a series of Mn-hydroxido complexes in which the oxidation state of the metal center ranges from 2+ to 4+. The molecular structure of the MnIII-OH complex demonstrates that three intramolecular H-bonds involving the hydroxido ligand are formed. Additional evidence for the formation of intramolecular H-bonds was provided by vibrational spectroscopy in which the energy of the O-H vibration supports its assignment as an H-bond donor. The stepwise oxidation of [MnIIH2pout(OH)]2- to its higher oxidized analogs was further substantiated by electrochemical measurements and results from electronic absorbance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. Our findings illustrate the utility of controlling both the primary and secondary coordination spheres to achieve structurally similar Mn-OH complexes with varying oxidation states.

Structural Investigation of Magnesium Complexes Supported by a Thiopyridyl Scorpionate Ligand.

Project description:Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of heteroleptic magnesium complexes stabilized with the scorpionate ligand tris(2-pyridylthio)methanide (Tptm). The compounds of the general formula [Mg(Tptm)(X)] (1-X; X = Cl, Br, I) were obtained via protonolysis reaction between the proligand and selected Grignard reagents. Attempts to isolate the potassium derivative K(Tptm) lead to decomposition of Tptm and formation of the alkene (C5H4N-S)2C=C(C5H4N-S)2, and this degradation was also modelled using DFT methods. Compound 1-I was treated with K(CH2Ph), affording the degradation product [Mg(Bptm)2] (2; Bptm = {CH(S-C5NH3)2}-). We analyzed and quantified the steric properties of the Tptm ligand using the structural information of the compounds obtained in this study paired with buried volume calculations, also adding the structural data of HTptm and its CF3-substituted congener (HTptmCF3). These studies highlight the highly flexible nature of this ligand scaffold and its ability to stabilize various coordination motifs and geometries, which is a highly desirable feature in the design of novel organometallic reagents and catalysts.

Mono- and Binuclear Copper(II) and Nickel(II) Complexes with the 3,6-Bis(picolylamino)-1,2,4,5-Tetrazine Ligand.

Project description:Four new compounds of formulas [Cu(hfac)2(L)] (1), [Ni(hfac)2(L)] (2), [{Cu(hfac)2}2(µ-L)]·2CH3OH (3) and [{Ni(hfac)2}2(µ-L)]·2CH3CN (4) [Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone and L = 3,6-bis(picolylamino)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine] have been prepared and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural mononuclear complexes where the metal ions [copper(II) (1) and nickel(II) (2)] are six-coordinated in distorted octahedral MN2O4 surroundings which are built by two bidentate hfac ligands plus another bidentate L molecule. This last ligand coordinates to the metal ions through the nitrogen atoms of the picolylamine fragment. Compounds 3 and 4 are centrosymmetric homodinuclear compounds where two bidentate hfac units are the bidentate capping ligands at each metal center and a bis-bidentate L molecule acts as a bridge. The values of the intramolecular metal···metal separation are 7.97 (3) and 7.82 Å (4). Static (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out for polycrystalline samples 1-4 in the temperature range 1.9-300 K. Curie law behaviors were observed for 1 and 2, the downturn of χMT in the low temperature region for 2 being due to the zero-field splitting of the nickel(II) ion. Very weak [J = -0.247(2) cm-1] and relatively weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions [J = -4.86(2) cm-1] occurred in 3 and 4, respectively (the spin Hamiltonian being defined as H = -JS1·S2). Simple symmetry considerations about the overlap between the magnetic orbitals across the extended bis-bidentate L bridge in 3 and 4 account for their magnetic properties.

A Series of Cyanide-Bridged Binuclear Complexes.

Project description:A series of cyanide-bridged binuclear complexes, ('S(3)')Ni-CN-M[Tp(tBu)] ('S(3)' = bis(2-mercaptophenyl)sulfide, Tp(tBu) = hydrotris(3-tert-butylpyrazolyl)borate, M = Fe (2-Fe), Co (2-Co), Ni (2-Ni), Zn (2-Zn)) was prepared by the coupling of K[('S(3)')Ni(CN)] with [Tp(tBu)]MX. The isostructural series of complexes was structurally and spectroscopically characterized. A similar coupling strategy was used to synthesize the anionic copper(I) analogue, Et4N{('S3')Ni-CN-Cu[Tp(tBu)]}, 2-Cu.An alternative synthesis was devised for the preparation of the linkages isomers of 2-Zn, i.e. of cyanide-bridged linkage isomers. X-ray diffraction, (13)C NMR and IR spectral studies established that isomerization to the more stable Ni-CN-Zn isomer occurs. DFT computational results buttressed the experimental observations indicating that the cyanide-bridged isomer is ca. 5 kcal/mol more stable than its linkage isomer.

Robust dicopper(i) μ-boryl complexes supported by a dinucleating naphthyridine-based ligand.

Project description:Copper boryl species have been widely invoked as reactive intermediates in Cu-catalysed C-H borylation reactions, but their isolation and study have been challenging. Use of the robust dinucleating ligand DPFN (2,7-bis(fluoro-di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-1,8-naphthyridine) allowed for the isolation of two very thermally stable dicopper(i) boryl complexes, [(DPFN)Cu2(μ-Bpin)][NTf2] (2) and [(DPFN)Cu2(μ-Bcat)][NTf2] (4) (pin = 2,3-dimethylbutane-2,3-diol; cat = benzene-1,2-diol). These complexes were prepared by cleavage of the corresponding diborane via reaction with the alkoxide [(DPFN)Cu2(μ-O t Bu)][NTf2] (3). Reactivity studies illustrated the exceptional stability of these boryl complexes (thermal stability in solution up to 100 °C) and their role in the activation of C(sp)-H bonds. X-ray diffraction and computational studies provide a detailed description of the bonding and electronic structures in these complexes, and suggest that the dinucleating character of the naphthyridine-based ligand is largely responsible for their remarkable stability.
