CuPc Passivation of a MAPbBr₃ Single Crystal Surface.

ABSTRACT: In this study, a facile passivation for methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr₃) single crystals is reported. Stability against moisture and light remains the most critical demerit of perovskite materials, which is improved by depositing a 40 Å thick hydrophobic copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) layer on top of the cleaved perovskite surface. The water and light exposure processes were monitored with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with precise control of the exposure time and pressure. It is found that the CuPc top layer could protect the sample from moisture infiltration at a water exposure of 10¹³ L, while the nonpassivated sample started to degrade at 10⁸ L. During the light exposure, CuPc also slowed down the light-induced degradation, which is supported by the elemental ratio change of metallic lead and bromine. These results are further confirmed by the morphological comparison via scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam.

Improved Glass Surface Passivation for Single-Molecule Nanoarrays.

Project description:Single-molecule fluorescence techniques provide a critical tool for probing biomolecular and cellular interactions with unprecedented resolution and precision. Unfortunately, many of these techniques are hindered by a common problem, namely, the nonspecific adsorption of target biomolecules. This issue is mostly addressed by passivating the glass surfaces with a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brush. This is effective only at low concentrations of the probe molecule because there are defects inherent to polymer brushes formed on glass coverslips due to the presence of surface impurities. Tween-20, a detergent, is a promising alternative that can improve surface passivation, but it is incompatible with living cells, and it also possesses limited selectivity for glass background over metallic nanoparticles, which are frequently used as anchors for the probe molecules. To address these issues, we have developed a more versatile method to improve the PEG passivation. A thin film of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) is spin-coated and thermally cured on glass coverslips in order to cover the surface impurities. This minimizes the formation of PEG defects and reduces nonspecific adsorption, resulting in an improvement comparable to Tween-20 treatment. This approach was applied to single-molecule nanoarrays of streptavidin bound to AuPd nanodots patterned by e-beam lithography (EBL). The fluorescence signal to background ratio (SBR) on HSQ-coated glass was improved by ∼4-fold as compared to PEG directly on glass. This improvement enables direct imaging of ordered arrays of single molecules anchored to lithographically patterned arrays of metallic nanodots.

An improved surface passivation method for single-molecule studies.

Project description:We report a surface passivation method based on dichlorodimethylsilane (DDS)-Tween-20 for in vitro single-molecule studies, which, under the conditions tested here, more efficiently prevented nonspecific binding of biomolecules than the standard poly(ethylene glycol) surface. The DDS-Tween-20 surface was simple and inexpensive to prepare and did not perturb the behavior and activities of tethered biomolecules. It can also be used for single-molecule imaging in the presence of high concentrations of labeled species in solution.

Surface passivation extends single and biexciton lifetimes of InP quantum dots.

Project description:Indium phosphide quantum dots (InP QDs) are nontoxic nanomaterials with potential applications in photocatalytic and optoelectronic fields. Post-synthetic treatments of InP QDs are known to be essential for improving their photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQEs) and device performances, but the mechanisms remain poorly understood. Herein, by applying ultrafast transient absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies, we systematically investigate the dynamics of photogenerated carriers in InP QDs and how they are affected by two common passivation methods: HF treatment and the growth of a heterostructure shell (ZnS in this study). The HF treatment is found to improve the PLQE up to 16-20% by removing an intrinsic fast hole trapping channel (τ h,non = 3.4 ± 1 ns) in the untreated InP QDs while having little effect on the band-edge electron decay dynamics (τ e = 26-32 ns). The growth of the ZnS shell, on the other hand, is shown to improve the PLQE up to 35-40% by passivating both electron and hole traps in InP QDs, resulting in both a long-lived band-edge electron (τ e > 120 ns) and slower hole trapping lifetime (τ h,non > 45 ns). Furthermore, both the untreated and the HF-treated InP QDs have short biexciton lifetimes (τ xx ∼ 1.2 ± 0.2 ps). The growth of an ultra-thin ZnS shell (∼0.2 nm), on the other hand, can significantly extend the biexciton lifetime of InP QDs to 20 ± 2 ps, making it a passivation scheme that can improve both the single and multiple exciton lifetimes. Based on these results, we discuss the possible trap-assisted Auger processes in InP QDs, highlighting the particular importance of trap passivation for reducing the Auger recombination loss in InP QDs.

Surface Passivation with a Perfluoroalkane Brush Improves the Precision of Single-Molecule Measurements.

Project description:Single-molecule imaging is invaluable for investigating the heterogeneous behavior and interactions of biological molecules. However, an impediment to precise sampling of single molecules is the irreversible adsorption of components onto the surfaces of cover glasses. This causes continuous changes in the concentrations of different molecules dissolved or suspended in the aqueous phase from the moment a sample is dispensed, which will shift, over time, the position of chemical equilibria between monomeric and multimeric components. Interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT) is a technique in the single-molecule toolkit that has the capability to detect unlabeled proteins and protein complexes both as they adsorb onto and desorb from a glass surface. Here, we examine the reversible and irreversible interactions between a number of different proteins and glass via analysis of the adsorption and desorption of protein at the single-molecule level. Furthermore, we present a method for surface passivation that virtually eliminates irreversible adsorption while still ensuring the residence time of molecules on surfaces is sufficient for detection of adsorption by iSCAT. By grafting high-density perfluoroalkane brushes on cover-glass surfaces, we observe approximately equal numbers of adsorption and desorption events for proteins at the measurement surface (±1%). The fluorous-aqueous interface also prevents the kinetic trapping of protein complexes and assists in establishing a thermodynamic equilibrium between monomeric and multimeric components. This surface passivation approach is valuable for in vitro single-molecule experiments using iSCAT microscopy because it allows for continuous monitoring of adsorption and desorption of protein without either a decline in detection events or a change in sample composition due to the irreversible binding of protein to surfaces.

Structural and Photophysical Properties of Methylammonium Lead Tribromide (MAPbBr3) Single Crystals.

Project description:The structural and photophysical characteristics of MAPbBr3 single crystals prepared using the inverse temperature crystallization method are evaluated using temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical spectroscopy. Contrary to previous research reports on perovskite materials, we study phase transitions in crystal lattice structures accompanied with changes in optical properties expand throughout a wide temperature range of 300-1.5 K. The XRD studies reveal several phase transitions occurred at ~210 K, ~145 K, and ~80 K, respectively. The coexistence of two different crystallographic phases was observed at a temperature below 145 K. The emission peaks in the PL spectra are all asymmetric in line shape with weak and broad shoulders near the absorption edges, which are attributed to the Br atom vacancy on the surface of the crystals. The time-resolved PL measurements reveal the effect of the desorption/adsorption of gas molecules on the crystal surface on the PL lifetimes. Raman spectroscopy results indicate the strong interplays between cations and different halide atoms. Lastly, no diamagnetic shift or split in emission peaks can be observed in the magneto-PL spectra even at an applied magnetic field up to 5 T and at a temperature as low as 1.5 K.

Effect of Ultrasonic Nano-Crystal Surface Modification (UNSM) on the Passivation Behavior of Aged 316L Stainless Steel.

Project description:Stainless steels have good corrosion resistance in many environments but welding or aging can decrease their resistance. This work focused on the effect of aging time and ultrasonic nano-crystal surface modification on the passivation behavior of 316L stainless steel. In the case of slightly sensitized 316L stainless steel, increasing the aging time drastically decreased the pitting potential, increased the passive current density, and decreased the resistance of the passive film, even though aging did not form chromium carbide and a chromium depletion zone. This behavior is due to the micro-galvanic corrosion between the matrix and carbon segregated area, and this shows the importance of carbon segregation in grain boundaries to the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steel, in addition to the formation of the chromium depletion zone. UNSM (Ultrasonic Nano Crystal Surface Modification)-treatment to the slightly sensitized 316L stainless steel increased the pitting potential, decreased the passive current density, and increased the resistance of the passive film. However, in the case of heavily sensitized 316L stainless steel, UNSM-treatment decreased the pitting potential, increased the passive current density, and decreased the resistance of the passive film. This behavior is due to the dual effects of the UNSM-treatment. That is, the UNSM-treatment reduced the carbon segregation, regardless of whether the stainless steel 316L was slightly or heavily sensitized. However, since this treatment made mechanical flaws in the outer surface in the case of the heavily sensitized stainless steel, UNSM-treatment may eliminate chromium carbide, and this flaw can be a pitting initiation site, and therefore decrease the pitting corrosion resistance.

Temperature-Dependent Optical Band Gap in CsPbBr3, MAPbBr3, and FAPbBr3 Single Crystals.

Project description:Single crystals represent a benchmark for understanding the bulk properties of halide perovskites. We have indeed studied the dielectric function of lead bromide perovskite single crystals (MAPbBr3, CsPbBr3 and for the first time FAPbBr3) by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the range of 1-5 eV while varying the temperature from 183 to 440 K. An extremely low absorption coefficient in the sub-band gap region was found, indicating the high optical quality of all three crystals. We extracted the band gap values through critical point analysis showing that Tauc-based values are systematically underestimated. The two structural phase transitions, i.e., orthorhombic-tetragonal and tetragonal-cubic, show distinct optical behaviors, with the former having a discontinuous character. The cross-correlation of optical data with DFT calculations evidences the role of octahedral tilting in tailoring the value of the band gap at a given temperature, whereas differences in the thermal expansion affect the slope of the band gap trend as a function of temperature.

Impact of Molecule Concentration, Diffusion Rates and Surface Passivation on Single-Molecule Fluorescence Studies in Solution.

Project description:For single-molecule studies in solution, very small concentrations of dye-labelled molecules are employed in order to achieve single-molecule sensitivity. In typical studies with confocal microscopes, often concentrations in the pico-molar regime are required. For various applications that make use of single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) or two-color coincidence detection (TCCD), the molecule concentration must be set explicitly to targeted values and furthermore needs to be stable over a period of several hours. As a consequence, specific demands must be imposed on the surface passivation of the cover slides during the measurements. The aim of having only one molecule in the detection volume at the time is not only affected by the absolute molecule concentration, but also by the rate of diffusion. Therefore, we discuss approaches to control and to measure absolute molecule concentrations. Furthermore, we introduce an approach to calculate the probability of chance coincidence events and demonstrate that measurements with challenging smFRET samples require a strict limit of maximal sample concentrations in order to produce meaningful results.

Stability of Near-Surface Nitrogen Vacancy Centers Using Dielectric Surface Passivation.

Project description:We study the photophysical stability of ensemble near-surface nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond under vacuum and air. The optically detected magnetic resonance contrast of the NV centers was measured following exposure to laser illumination, showing opposing trends in air compared to vacuum (increasing by up to 9% and dropping by up to 25%, respectively). Characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests a surface reconstruction: In air, atmospheric oxygen adsorption on a surface leads to an increase in NV- fraction, whereas in vacuum, net oxygen desorption increases the NV0 fraction. NV charge state switching is confirmed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Deposition of ∼2 nm alumina (Al2O3) over the diamond surface was shown to stabilize the NV charge state under illumination in either environment, attributed to a more stable surface electronegativity. The use of an alumina coating on diamond is therefore a promising approach to improve the resilience of NV sensors.

Atomistic mechanisms of water vapor-induced surface passivation.

Project description:The microscopic mechanisms underpinning the spontaneous surface passivation of metals from ubiquitous water have remained largely elusive. Here, using in situ environmental electron microscopy to atomically monitor the reaction dynamics between aluminum surfaces and water vapor, we provide direct experimental evidence that the surface passivation results in a bilayer oxide film consisting of a crystalline-like Al(OH)3 top layer and an inner layer of amorphous Al2O3. The Al(OH)3 layer maintains a constant thickness of ~5.0 Å, while the inner Al2O3 layer grows at the Al2O3/Al interface to a limiting thickness. On the basis of experimental data and atomistic modeling, we show the tunability of the dissociation pathways of H2O molecules with the Al, Al2O3, and Al(OH)3 surface terminations. The fundamental insights may have practical significance for the design of materials and reactions for two seemingly disparate but fundamentally related disciplines of surface passivation and catalytic H2 production from water.
