Project description:The rise of optogenetics provides unique opportunities to advance materials and biomedical engineering, as well as fundamental understanding in neuroscience. This protocol describes the fabrication of optoelectronic devices for studying intact neural systems. Unlike optogenetic approaches that rely on rigid fiber optics tethered to external light sources, these novel devices carry wirelessly powered microscale, inorganic light-emitting diodes (μ-ILEDs) and multimodal sensors inside the brain. We describe the technical procedures for construction of these devices, their corresponding radiofrequency power scavengers and their implementation in vivo for experimental application. In total, the timeline of the procedure, including device fabrication, implantation and preparation to begin in vivo experimentation, can be completed in ~3-8 weeks. Implementation of these devices allows for chronic (tested for up to 6 months) wireless optogenetic manipulation of neural circuitry in animals navigating complex natural or home-cage environments, interacting socially, and experiencing other freely moving behaviors.

Project description:Resonance interaction between a molecular transition and a confined electromagnetic field can lead to weak or strong light-matter coupling. Considering the substantial exciton-phonon coupling in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, it is thus interesting to explore whether weak light-matter coupling can be used to redistribute optical density of states and to change the rate of radiative decay. Here, we demonstrate that the emission distribution of TADF emitters can be reshaped and narrowed in a top-emitting organic light-emitting device (OLED) with a weakly coupled microcavity. The Purcell effect of weak microcavity is found to be different for TADF emitters with different molecular orientations. We demonstrate that radiative rates of the TADF emitters with vertical orientation can be substantial increased in weakly coupled organic microcavity. These observations can enhance external quantum efficiencies, reduce efficiency roll-off, and improve color-purities of TADF OLEDs, especially for emitters without highly horizontal orientation.

Project description:Building transient electronics are promising and emerging strategy to alleviate the pollution issues from electronic waste (e-waste). Although a variety of transient devices comprising organic and inorganic materials have been described, transient light emitting devices are still elusive but highly desirable because of the huge amount of lighting and display related consumer electronics. Here we report a simple and efficient fabrication of large-area flexible transient alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) device through a full-solution processing method. Using transparent flexible AgNW-polymer as both electrodes, the devices exhibit high flexibility and both ends side light emission, with the features of controlled size and patterned structure. By modulating the mass ratio of blue and yellow phosphors, the emission color is changed from white to blue. Impressively, the fabricated ACEL device can be thoroughly dissolved in water within 30 min. Our strategy combining such advances in transient light emitting devices with simple structure, widely used materials, full solution process, and high solubility will demonstrate great potential in resolving the e-waste from abandoned light-emitting products and expand the opportunities for air-stable flexible light emitting devices.

Project description:Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have become part of numerous electrical and electronic systems such as lighting, displays, status indicator lamps and wearable electronics. Owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties and deposition via simple solution process, metal halide perovskites possess unique potential for developing halide perovskite-based LEDs (PeLEDs) with superior photoluminescence efficiencies leading to external quantum efficiencies beyond 20% for PeLEDS. However, the limited durability, high operative voltages, and challenges of scale-up are persisting barriers in achieving required technology readiness levels. To build up the existing knowledge and raise the device performance this review provides a state-of-the-art study on the properties, film and device fabrication, efficiency, and stability of PeLEDs. In terms of commercialization, PeLEDs need to overcome materials and device challenges including stability, ion migration, phase segregation, and joule heating, which are discussed in this review. We hope, discussions about the strategies to overcome the stability issues and enhancement the materials intrinsic properties towards development more stable and efficient optoelectronic devices can pave the way for scalability and cost-effective production of PeLEDs.

Project description:III-nitride semiconductor-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have superior physical properties, such as high thermal stability and brightness, for application to solid-state lighting sources. With the commercialization of GaN-based LEDs, improving LED reliability is important because they can be affected by electrostatic discharge, reverse leakage, and breakdown. However, research on the reverse bias characteristics of GaN-based LEDs is insufficient. We studied the reverse breakdown mechanism and demonstrated that a local breakdown can form a conductive channel in GaN-based LEDs, which can be expanded to a novel planar-type LED structure without an n-contact electrode. Furthermore, we found that this approach can be applied to AC-controllable light-emitting devices without any AC-DC converter.

Project description:Formamidinium lead halide (FAPbX3) has attracted greater attention and is more prominent recently in photovoltaic devices due to its broad absorption and higher thermal stability in comparison to more popular methylammonium lead halide MAPbX3. Herein, a simple and highly reproducible room temperature synthesis of device grade high quality formamidinium lead bromide CH(NH2)2PbBr3 (FAPbBr3) colloidal nanocrystals (NC) having high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of 55-65% is reported. In addition, we demonstrate high brightness perovskite light emitting device (Pe-LED) with these FAPbBr3 perovskite NC thin film using 2,2',2″-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) commonly known as TPBi and 4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-methylpyrimidine (B3PYMPM) as electron transport layers (ETL). The Pe-LED device with B3PYMPM as ETL has bright electroluminescence of up to 2714 cd/m2, while the Pe-LED device with TPBi as ETL has higher peak luminous efficiency of 6.4 cd/A and peak luminous power efficiency of 5.7 lm/W. To our knowledge this is the first report on high brightness light emitting device based on CH(NH2)2PbBr3 widely known as FAPbBr3 nanocrystals in literature.

Project description:Most of the present-day down-conversion white light-emitting devices (WLEDs) utilize rare-earth elements, which are expensive and facing the problem of shortage in supply. WLEDs based on the combination of orange and blue emitting copper nanoclusters are introduced, which are easy to produce and low in cost. Orange emitting Cu nanoclusters (NCs) are synthesized using glutathione as both the reduction agent and stabilizer, followed by solvent induced aggregation leading to the emission enhancement. Photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QY) of 24% and 43% in solution and solid state are achieved, respectively. Blue emitting Cu nanoclusters are synthesized by reduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone supported Cu(II) ions using ascorbic acid, followed by surface treatment with sodium citrate which improves both the emission intensity and stability of the clusters, resulting in the PL QY of 14% both in solution and solid state. All-copper nanocluster based down-conversion WLEDs are fabricated by integrating powdered orange and blue emitting Cu NC samples on a commercial GaN LED chip providing 370 nm excitation. They show favorable white light characteristics with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage color coordinates, color rendering index, and correlated color temperature of (0.36, 0.31), 92, and 4163 K, respectively.

Project description:Traditionally, ZnS or ZnSe is chosen as the shell material for InP quantum dots (QDs). However, for green or blue InP QDs, the ZnSe shell will form a type-II structure resulting in a redshift of the emission spectrum. Although the band gap of ZnS is wider, its lattice mismatch with InP is larger (∼7.7%), resulting in more defect states and lowered quantum yield (QY). To overcome the above problems, we introduced the intermediate ZnMnS layer in InP/ZnMnS/ZnS QDs. The wide band gap of the intermediate layer (3.7 eV) can confine the electrons and holes in the core completely, and the formation of the type-II structure is avoided. As a result, green InP-based QDs with QY up to 80% were obtained. By adjusting the halogen ratios of the ZnX2 precursor, the minimum and maximum emission peaks are 470 and 620 nm, respectively, covering the whole visible range. Finally, after optimizing the coating shell process, the maximum external quantum efficiency of QD light-emitting diodes fabricated from this InP-based green light QDs can reach 2.7%.

Project description:Interactive display devices integrating multiple functions have become a development trend of display technology. The excellent luminescence properties of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) make it an ideal luminescent material for the next generation of wide-color gamut displays. Here we design and fabricate dual-function light-sensing/displaying light-emitting devices based on PQDs. The devices can display information as an output port, and simultaneously sense outside light signals as an input port and modulate the display information in a non-contact mode. The dual functions were attributed to the device designs: (1) the hole transport layer in the devices also acts as the light-sensing layer to absorb outside light signals; (2) the introduced hole trapping layer interface can trap holes originating from the light-sensing layer, and thus tune the charge transport properties and the light-emitting intensities. The sensing and display behavior of the device can be further modulated by light signals with different time and space information. This fusion of sensing and display functions has broad prospects in non-contact interactive screens and communication ports.

Project description:In this study, blue perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) were prepared using didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), which can passivate surface defects caused by the loss of surface ligands and reduce particle size distribution. After the passivation of DDAB, blue CsPbClxBr3-x PQDs dispersed in n-octane produced a more compact and uniform PQD thin film than the non-passivated ones. The resulting device showed a stabile lifetime, and an EL peak of 470 nm and a maximum EQE of 1.63% were obtained at an operating voltage of 2.6 V and a current density of 0.34 mA/cm2. This work aims to provide a simple method to prepare blue-emitting PQDs and high-performance PQD-based light-emitting devices.
