Knowledge, attitude, and practice of university students towards monkeypox in Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT: The recent outbreak of viral zoonotic disease-monkeypox-caused by the monkeypox virus, has infected many people worldwide. This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning monkeypox among university students in Bangladesh. Data were collected using purposive snowball sampling from 887 university students through an online survey using Google Form. The participants were mostly in their twenties (M = 22.33 [SD 2.01] years), and they spent, on average, 2.59 [SD 1.91] hours/day on electronic and social media. The participants generally showed moderate knowledge (39.5%), low attitude (25.1%), and moderate practice (48.6%) toward monkeypox, with 47.6% having had a moderate KAP score. Findings further showed that personal attributes of university students, i.e., age, sex, year of schooling, residence, living status, geographical distribution, e.g., division, were statistically and significantly associated with knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding monkeypox and overall KAP score. It is also apparent that health status, susceptibility to monkeypox, and exposure to social media were the most common factors significantly associated with knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding monkeypox and overall KAP score. The current study's findings underscore the need for developing appropriate information, education, and communication (IEC) materials and their dissemination, which could play an important role in reducing the risk of monkeypox and similar other infectious diseases, particularly among students in Bangladesh.

Project description:BackgroundThe emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a growing human and animal health concern around the world. When a number of studies have emphasized the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) regarding antibiotic use and resistance in humans, little attention has been paid to the veterinary sector. The aim of this study was to understand the KAP towards antibiotic use and resistance among veterinarians in Bangladesh.MethodsA cross-sectional online based questionnaire survey was conducted from August to September 2020 among the registered veterinary practitioners. A self-administered Google form questionnaire consisting of 45 questions on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding antibiotic use and resistance was used. For statistical significance test we used Chi-square or Fisher's Exact test and logistic regression for factor analysis.ResultsA total of 208 registered veterinarians participated in this study. The study involved a majority of male participants, constituting 85.1%, while 54.8% of the participants held a Masters degree. Around 52% of the veterinarians were poultry practitioners. All respondents were familiar with antimicrobials. The participants (91.4%) knew that antibiotics cannot cure viral infections, while 97.6% believed that frequent antibiotic prescriptions rendered them less effective. Participants claimed that only they were eligible to prescribe drugs for the treatment of animals, and around 80% disagreed with adding antibiotics with feed/water as a growth promoter in livestock. Of the total participants, 87% believed that a local antimicrobial guideline would be more effective than an international one. A multivariable analysis revealed that male veterinarians have 2.37 times higher knowledge regarding antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) (OR = 2.37, CI = 1.01-5.59, p = 0.05). Veterinarians engaged in government services demonstrated a 2.59 times more favorable attitude towards AMU and AMR (OR = 2.59, CI = 0.99-6.73, p = 0.05). Additionally, respondents aged 31-35 were 0.45 times more likely to exhibit good practices (OR = 0.45, CI = 0.2-1.00, p = 0.05). However, gaps in practices were highlighted in our study, suggesting training deficiencies.ConclusionThe present study, for the first time conducted in Bangladesh, dictates that future interventions like academic courses, workshops, and seminars on antibiotic usage and resistance are needed to facilitate the knowledge, behavior and practice of veterinarians with regard to the rational use of antibiotics.

Project description:BackgroundThe prevalence of mental illness among medical students is high. A gap remains on what knowledge should be given to improve the attitudes and perceptions towards mental health. Despite the vast body of literature globally, no study has been conducted in Uganda to assess the levels of knowledge, attitude, and perception among medical students in Uganda.ObjectiveTo determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and perception and their associated factors among medical students in Uganda.MethodsA cross-sectional study was done among 259 undergraduate medical students in a public university capturing information on knowledge, attitude, and perception towards mental health. Linear regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with knowledge, attitude, and perception.ResultsAbout 77.72% had high knowledge, 49.29% had positive attitudes, and 46.92% had good perceptions of mental health. There was a significant positive relationship between attitude and perceptions towards mental illness. At multilevel analysis, being in year 4 increased the level of knowledge (β = 1.50 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.46-2.54], p = 0.005) while a positive history of mental illness worsened perceptions towards mental illness (β = -4.23 [95% CI = -7.44-1.03], p = 0.010).ConclusionMedical students have a high level of knowledge about mental illness but the majority had poor attitudes and perceptions of mental illness. Exposure to psychiatry knowledge about mental illness in year four increased students' knowledge while prior experience with mental illness conditions was associated with poorer perceptions. The information present in this study can be used by policymakers and future researchers to design future studies and interventions to improve knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes especially among students who have a history of mental illness. Improvements in knowledge, attitude, and perception may improve the mental health services for the future patients of these medical students.

Project description:BackgroundBreast cancer is the most common cancer and leading cause of death worldwide. Breast self-examination (BSE) is a cost-effective tool for self-assessment and for potential early detection of breast cancer in low-resource settings. This study aimed to explore knowledge, practice and associated factors of BSE among female university students of Bangladesh.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 conveniently selected female students aged ≥18 years from four universities. A pre-tested semi-structured self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression and simple and multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess determinants of knowledge and practice regarding BSE.ResultsA total of 400 students participated from two private and two public universities (100 from each university). The average age of the participants was 20.89 ± 1.72 years (±SD). Of all, 60.5% had presence of knowledge (i.e., heard) about BSE. The average knowledge score was 7.41 ± 3.27 (in a scale of 0-15). Among those who had knowledge about BSE only 10.7% participants practiced it monthly. Being in public university (Adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR]: 3.42, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.73-6.74) and years of education (aOR: 1.42, 95%CI: 1.02-1.97) were significant determinant of presence of knowledge regarding BSE. Moreover, studying in public university (β: 0.99, 95%CI 0.16-1.82) and education years passed (β: 0.51; 95%CI: 0.18-0.85) were associated with a higher knowledge score. Practice of BSE was negatively associated with students' rural living prior to admission (aOR: 0.26, 95%CI: 0.08-0.79), and positively associated with level of knowledge regarding BSE (aOR: 1.48; 95%CI 0.08-0.79).ConclusionThis study revealed a general lack of knowledge and practice regarding BSE among female university students. As knowledge and practice of BSE would increase breast cancer awareness and screening acceptance, authorities should address the issue with properly planned strategies.
