Helical model of compression and thermal expansion.

ABSTRACT: A negative linear temperature expansion and a negative linear compressibility were observed for imidazolium benzoate salt. Its strongly anisotropic strain induced by the temperature and pressure changes has been explained by the mechanism of H-bonded helices deformed in the structure. X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy were used to analyze interactions in the crystal. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAiM) approach was applied to analyze the hydrogen bonds and other interactions. In the salt under study, the interactions within the helix are substantially higher in energy than between helices. With decreasing temperature and increasing pressure, the value of the helix pitch increases while the value of the semi-major axis decreases, which results in the negative linear expansion and negative linear compression, respectively.

Helium Incorporation into Scandium Fluoride, a Model Negative Thermal Expansion Material.

Project description:Scandium trifluoride is a model negative thermal expansion (NTE) material. Its simple structure can be described as an A-site vacant perovskite, and it shows isotropic NTE over a very wide temperature range (up to ∼1100 K), due to transverse vibrational motion of the fluoride. Like many framework NTE materials, it undergoes a phase transition at low pressures, adopting a rhombohedral (R3̅c) structure at >0.7 GPa and 300 K in commonly used nonpenetrating pressure media, such as silicone oil. High pressure X-ray diffraction data and gas uptake/release measurements indicate that, on compression in helium above ∼200 K, helium is inserted into ScF3 to form the defect perovskite He x ScF3. The incorporation of helium stiffens the structure and changes its phase behavior. At room temperature, complete filling of the structure with helium does not occur until >1.5 GPa. On compression, a cubic perovskite structure is maintained until ∼5 GPa. As the pressure was increased to ∼9.5 GPa, a further transition occurred at ∼7 GPa. The first transition at ∼5 GPa is likely to a tetragonal (P4/mbm) perovskite, but the detailed structure of the perovskite phase formed on compression above ∼7 GPa is unclear. Cooling down from 300 to 100 K in helium at ∼0.4 GPa leads to an approximate composition of He0.1ScF3. High pressure neutron diffraction measurements, in the temperature range 15-150 K show that the incorporation of helium increases the pressure at which the cubic (Pm3̅m) to rhombohedral (R3̅c) putative quantum structural phase transition occurs from close to 0 GPa to ∼0.2 GPa at 0 K.

Analytical Model of Temperature-Induced Deformation for Tunable Thermal Expansion Metamaterial.

Project description:Tunable thermal expansion metamaterials exhibit superior shock absorption performance in the field of high-precision equipment, but the applications are currently restricted by the unclear quantitative relationship of temperature-induced deformation. Herein, this work leverages the virtual work principle and the deformation geometric relationship to establish a generic temperature-induced deformation control model for bi-materials by utilizing the key variable coverage ratio under the condition of no deformation in the vertical direction. The feasible region regarding flexibility for the internal serpentine unit and lattice structure with different coverage ratios is given. The combination of the finite element and experimental methods is adopted to examine temperature-induced deformation, which presents tunable thermal expansion performances associated with the coverage ratio and temperature. This work, based on the established deformation coordination relationship of dual-material temperature-sensitive metamaterials, achieves temperature-induced deformation control and provides a reference for structural design adaptable in various working conditions such as vibration isolation and vibration reduction in complex engineering such as aerospace and so on. By strategically designing the coverage of the two structures within the specified range to maintain equivalent flexibility, the ultimate deformation of the serpentine unit is reduced by one-half due to deformation induced by temperature variations.

Fundamentals of Thermal Expansion and Thermal Contraction.

Project description:Thermal expansion is an important property of substances. Its theoretical prediction has been challenging, particularly in cases the volume decreases with temperature, i.e., thermal contraction or negative thermal expansion at high temperatures. In this paper, a new theory recently developed by the authors has been reviewed and further examined in the framework of fundamental thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Its applications to cerium with colossal thermal expansion and Fe₃Pt with thermal contraction in certain temperature ranges are discussed. It is anticipated that this theory is not limited to volume only and can be used to predict a wide range of properties at finite temperatures.

Progress of Research in Negative Thermal Expansion Materials: Paradigm Shift in the Control of Thermal Expansion.

Project description:To meet strong demands for the control of thermal expansion necessary because of the advanced development of industrial technology, widely various giant negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials have been developed during the last decade. Discovery of large isotropic NTE in ZrW2O8 has greatly advanced research on NTE deriving from its characteristic crystal structure, which is now classified as conventional NTE. Materials classified in this category have increased rapidly. In addition to development of conventional NTE materials, remarkable progress has been made in phase-transition-type NTE materials using a phase transition accompanied by volume contraction upon heating. These giant NTE materials have brought a paradigm shift in the control of thermal expansion. This report classifies and reviews mechanisms and materials of NTE to suggest means of improving their functionality and of developing new materials. A subsequent summary presents some recent activities related to how these giant NTE materials are used as practical thermal expansion compensators, with some examples of composites containing these NTE materials.

Surface characterization of the thermal remodeling helical plant virus.

Project description:Previously, we have reported that spherical particles (SPs) are formed by the thermal remodeling of rigid helical virions of native tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) at 94°C. SPs have remarkable features: stability, unique adsorption properties and immunostimulation potential. Here we performed a comparative study of the amino acid composition of the SPs and virions surface to characterize their properties and take an important step to understanding the structure of SPs. The results of tritium planigraphy showed that thermal transformation of TMV leads to a significant increase in tritium label incorporation into the following sites of SPs protein: 41-71 а.a. and 93-122 a.a. At the same time, there was a decrease in tritium label incorporation into the N- and C- terminal region (1-15 a.a., 142-158 a.a). The use of complementary physico-chemical methods allowed us to carry out a detailed structural analysis of the surface and to determine the most likely surface areas of SPs. The obtained data make it possible to consider viral protein thermal rearrangements, and to open new opportunities for biologically active complex design using information about SPs surface amino acid composition and methods of non-specific adsorption and bioconjugation.

Photoreactive helical nanoaggregates exhibiting morphology transition on thermal reconstruction.

Project description:The supramolecular design of photochromic molecules has produced various smart molecular assemblies that can switch their structures and/or functions in response to light stimuli. However, most of these assemblies require large structural changes of the photochromic molecules for an efficient conversion of assembled states, which often suppresses the photoreactivity within the self-assemblies. Here we report molecular assemblies, based on a photo-cross-linkable chromophoric dyad, in which a small amount of ultraviolet-generated photochemical product can guide the entire system into different assembly processes. In apolar solution, the intact dyad self-assembles into right-handed superhelical fibrils. On ultraviolet-irradiation of these fibrils, an effective photoreaction affords a sole photo-cross-linked product. When right-handed helical fibrils, containing a minor amount of the photoproduct, are thermally reconstructed, the intact molecule and the photoproduct undergo a co-assembly process that furnishes superhelical fibrils with different molecular packing structures. This molecular design principle should afford new paradigms for smart molecular assemblies.

Thermal expansion anomaly regulated by entropy.

Project description:Thermal expansion, defined as the temperature dependence of volume under constant pressure, is a common phenomenon in nature and originates from anharmonic lattice dynamics. However, it has been poorly understood how thermal expansion can show anomalies such as colossal positive, zero, or negative thermal expansion (CPTE, ZTE, or NTE), especially in quantitative terms. Here we show that changes in configurational entropy due to metastable micro(scopic)states can lead to quantitative prediction of these anomalies. We integrate the Maxwell relation, statistic mechanics, and first-principles calculations to demonstrate that when the entropy is increased by pressure, NTE occurs such as in Invar alloy (Fe3Pt, for example), silicon, ice, and water, and when the entropy is decreased dramatically by pressure, CPTE is expected such as in anti-Invar cerium, ice and water. Our findings provide a theoretic framework to understand and predict a broad range of anomalies in nature in addition to thermal expansion, which may include gigantic electrocaloric and electromechanical responses, anomalously reduced thermal conductivity, and spin distributions.

Negative Thermal Expansion in Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn₂SiGeO₇.

Project description:Solid solutions with the composition Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn₂Si2-xGexO₇ and BaZn₂Si2-xGexO₇ were prepared with different values of x using a conventional mixed oxide route. Both compounds exhibit very different thermal expansion, which is due to the different crystal structures. Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn₂Si2-xGexO₇ solid solutions exhibit the structure of high-temperature BaZn₂Si₂O₇ and show negative thermal expansion, which was proven via high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Up to around x = 1, the crystal structure remains the same. Above this value, the low-temperature phase becomes stable. The Sr-free solid solutions have the crystal structure of low-temperature BaZn₂Si₂O₇ and show also a limited solubility of Ge. These Sr-free compositions show transitions of low- to high-temperature phases, which are shifted to higher temperatures with increasing Ge-concentration.

Expansion and compression of a protein folding intermediate by GroEL.

Project description:The GroEL-GroES chaperonin system is required for the assisted folding of many essential proteins. The precise nature of this assistance remains unclear, however. Here we show that denatured RuBisCO from Rhodospirillum rubrum populates a stable, nonaggregating, and kinetically trapped monomeric state at low temperature. Productive folding of this nonnative intermediate is fully dependent on GroEL, GroES, and ATP. Reactivation of the trapped RuBisCO monomer proceeds through a series of GroEL-induced structural rearrangements, as judged by resonance energy transfer measurements between the amino- and carboxy-terminal domains of RuBisCO. A general mechanism used by GroEL to push large, recalcitrant proteins like RuBisCO toward their native states thus appears to involve two steps: partial unfolding or rearrangement of a nonnative protein upon capture by a GroEL ring, followed by spatial constriction within the GroEL-GroES cavity that favors or enforces compact, folding-competent intermediate states.

Extraordinary anisotropic thermal expansion in photosalient crystals.

Project description:Although a plethora of metal complexes have been characterized, those having multifunctional properties are very rare. This article reports three isotypical complexes, namely [Cu(benzoate)L 2], where L = 4-styryl-pyridine (4spy) (1), 2'-fluoro-4-styryl-pyridine (2F-4spy) (2) and 3'-fluoro-4-styryl-pyridine (3F-4spy) (3), which show photosalient behavior (photoinduced crystal mobility) while they undergo [2+2] cyclo-addition. These crystals also exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion when heated from room temperature to 200°C. The overall thermal expansion of the crystals is impressive, with the largest volumetric thermal expansion coefficients for 1, 2 and 3 of 241.8, 233.1 and 285.7 × 10-6 K-1, respectively, values that are comparable to only a handful of other reported materials known to undergo colossal thermal expansion. As a result of the expansion, their single crystals occasionally move by rolling. Altogether, these materials exhibit unusual and hitherto untapped solid-state properties.
