High-Q lasing via all-dielectric Bloch-surface-wave platform.

ABSTRACT: Controlling the propagation and emission of light via Bloch surface waves (BSWs) has held promise in the field of on-chip nanophotonics. BSW-based optical devices are being widely investigated to develop on-chip integration systems. However, a coherent light source that is based on the stimulated emission of a BSW mode has yet to be developed. Here, we demonstrate lasers based on a guided BSW mode sustained by a gain-medium guiding structure microfabricated on the top of a BSW platform. A long-range propagation length of the BSW mode and a high-quality lasing emission of the BSW mode are achieved. The BSW lasers possess a lasing threshold of 6.7 μJ/mm² and a very narrow linewidth reaching a full width at half maximum as small as 0.019 nm. Moreover, the proposed lasing scheme exhibits high sensitivity to environmental changes suggesting the applicability of the proposed BSW lasers in ultra-sensitive devices.

Bloch Surface Wave-Coupled Emission at Ultra-Violet Wavelengths.

Project description:The interaction of fluorophores with nearby metallic structures is now an active area of research. Dielectric photonic structures offer some advantages over plasmonic structures, namely small energy losses and less quenching. We describe a dielectric one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC), which supports Bloch surface waves (BSWs) from 280 to 440 nm. This BSW structure is a quartz slide coated with alternating layers of SiO2 and Si3N4. We show that this structure displays BSWs and that the near-UV fluorophore, 2-aminopurine (2-AP), on the top surface of the structure couples with the BSWs. Fluorophores do not have to be inside the structure for coupling and show a narrow angular distribution, with an angular separation of wavelengths. The Bloch wave-coupled emission (BWCE) radiates through the dielectric layer. These BSW structures, with useful wavelength range for detection of intrinsic protein and cofactor fluorescence, provide opportunities for novel optical configurations for bioassays with surface-localized biomolecules and for optical imaging using the coupled emission.

Dielectric-induced surface wave radiation loss.

Project description:We investigate a model which shows how the introduction of a perturbing dielectric close to an electromagnetic surface wave leads to radiation away from the surface through the dielectric. This resembles a surface waveguide passing through a wall or being deployed underground. Our theory, which is based on the mode-matching technique, allows quantitative determination of losses from a bound surface wave mode up to the point of its complete extinction. For a surface wave supported by a coated, conducting sheet the attenuation due to the perturbing dielectric is calculated for a number of frequencies, permittivities of the perturbation and separations between the sheet and the perturbing dielectric. The accuracy of our results is verified by simulation of the system with a full-wave numerical solution. Finally, we report experimental data of perturbed surface waves on a cable, which are in qualitative agreement with our model.

Spectral tuning of Bloch Surface Wave resonances by light-controlled optical anisotropy.

Project description:Fostered by the recent advancements in photonic technologies, the need for all-optical dynamic control on complex photonic elements is emerging as more and more relevant, especially in integrated photonics and metasurface-based flat-optics. In this framework, optically-induced anisotropy has been proposed as powerful mean enabling tuning functionalities in several planar architectures. Here, we design and fabricate an anisotropic two-dimensional bull's eye cavity inscribed within an optically-active polymeric film spun on a one-dimensional photonic crystal sustaining Bloch surface waves (BSW). Thanks to the cavity morphology, two surface resonant modes with substantially orthogonal polarizations can be coupled within the cavity from free-space illumination. We demonstrate that a dynamic control on the resonant mode energies can be easily operated by modulating the orientation of the optically-induced birefringence on the surface, via a polarized external laser beam. Overall, reversible blue- and red-shifts of the resonant BSWs are observed within a spectral range of about 2 nm, with a moderate laser power illumination. The polymeric structure is constituted by a novel blend of an azopolymer and a thermally-sensitive resist, which allows a precise patterning via thermal scanning probe lithography, while providing a significant structural integrity against photo-fluidization or mass-flow effects commonly occurring in irradiated azopolymers. The proposed approach based on tailored birefringence opens up new pathways to finely control the optical coupling of localized surface modes to/from free-space radiation, particularly in hybrid organic-inorganic devices.

Extracting surface wave-coupled emission with subsurface dielectric gratings.

Project description:Conventional surface plasmons (SPs) or Bloch surface waves (BSWs) have a wave vector exceeding that of light in vacuum, and, therefore, the surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) or Bloch surface wave-coupled emission (BSWCE) cannot escape from the corresponding structures. With the aid of a high-refractive-index prism or an oil-immersion objective, the SPCE or BSWCE can be coupled into free space. But the large volumes of the prism and objective are certainly unfavorable for miniaturization of the optical systems or inconvenient for applications such as the optical displays. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new method to extract the SPCE or BSWCE with a subsurface dielectric grating. The experimental results verify that the chip-like substrate with two decorated sides can bring out the directional fluorescence emission in free space. The emitting direction and emitting patterns can be tuned by the period size and dimensionality of the gratings. Our work provides a new strategy to realize free-space directional fluorescence emission at a very low cost and compact configuration, which has potential applications in fluorescence-based sensing, imaging, light-emitting diodes, optical displays, and other near-field optical devices.

High-frequency rectification via chiral Bloch electrons.

Project description:Rectification is a process that converts electromagnetic fields into a direct current. Such a process underlies a wide range of technologies such as wireless communication, wireless charging, energy harvesting, and infrared detection. Existing rectifiers are mostly based on semiconductor diodes, with limited applicability to small-voltage or high-frequency inputs. Here, we present an alternative approach to current rectification that uses the intrinsic electronic properties of quantum crystals without using semiconductor junctions. We identify a previously unknown mechanism for rectification from skew scattering due to the inherent chirality of itinerant electrons in time-reversal invariant but inversion-breaking materials. Our calculations reveal large, tunable rectification effects in graphene multilayers and transition metal dichalcogenides. Our work demonstrates the possibility of realizing high-frequency rectifiers by rational material design and quantum wave function engineering.

Multifunctional on-chip directional coupler for spectral and polarimetric routing of Bloch surface wave.

Project description:Integration of multiple diversified functionalities into an ultracompact platform is crucial for the development of on-chip photonic devices. Recently, a promising all-dielectric two-dimensional platform based on Bloch surface waves (BSWs) sustained by dielectric multilayer has been proposed to enable various functionalities and provide novel approach to photonic devices. Here, we design and fabricate a multifunctional directional coupler to achieve both spectral and polarimetric routing by employing asymmetric nanoslits in a dielectric multilayer platform. Due to the dispersion property of BSWs, the directional coupling behavior is sensitive to wavelength and polarization. We demonstrate numerically and experimentally the wavelength selective directional coupling of TE BSW mode with an intensity ratio of the BSW excitation in opposite directions reaching 10 dB. Polarization selective directional coupling is also achieved at specific operating wavelength due to different response to a nanoantenna for TE and TM BSWs. The proposed two-dimensional photonic device opens new pathway for a wide range of practical applications such as molecular sensing, imaging with different polarization, and spectral requirements.

Novel Bloch wave excitation platform based on few-layer photonic crystal deposited on D-shaped optical fiber.

Project description:With the goal of ultimate control over the light propagation, photonic crystals currently represent the primary building blocks for novel nanophotonic devices. Bloch surface waves (BSWs) in periodic dielectric multilayer structures with a surface defect is a well-known phenomenon, which implies new opportunities for controlling the light propagation and has many applications in the physical and biological science. However, most of the reported structures based on BSWs require depositing a large number of alternating layers or exploiting a large refractive index (RI) contrast between the materials constituting the multilayer structure, thereby increasing the complexity and costs of manufacturing. The combination of fiber-optic-based platforms with nanotechnology is opening the opportunity for the development of high-performance photonic devices that enhance the light-matter interaction in a strong way compared to other optical platforms. Here, we report a BSW-supporting platform that uses geometrically modified commercial optical fibers such as D-shaped optical fibers, where a few-layer structure is deposited on its flat surface using metal oxides with a moderate difference in RI. In this novel fiber optic platform, BSWs are excited through the evanescent field of the core-guided fundamental mode, which indicates that the structure proposed here can be used as a sensing probe, along with other intrinsic properties of fiber optic sensors, as lightness, multiplexing capacity and easiness of integration in an optical network. As a demonstration, fiber optic BSW excitation is shown to be suitable for measuring RI variations. The designed structure is easy to manufacture and could be adapted to a wide range of applications in the fields of telecommunications, environment, health, and material characterization.

Diffraction-Free Bloch Surface Waves.

Project description:Here, we demonstrate a diffraction-free Bloch surface wave sustained on all-dielectric multilayers that does not diffract after being passed through three obstacles or across a single mode fiber. It can propagate in a straight line for distances longer than 110 μm at a wavelength of 633 nm and could be applied as an in-plane optical virtual probe both in air and in an aqueous environment. Its ability to be used in water, its long diffraction-free distance, and its tolerance to multiple obstacles make this wave ideal for certain applications in areas such as the biological sciences, where many measurements are made on glass surfaces or for which an aqueous environment is required, and for high-speed interconnections between chips, where low loss is necessary.

Real-Time Measurement of the Hygroscopic Growth Dynamics of Single Aerosol Nanoparticles with Bloch Surface Wave Microscopy.

Project description:The growth in aerosol particles caused by water uptake during increasing ambient relative humidity alters the physical and chemical properties of aerosols, which then affects public health, atmospheric chemistry, and the Earth's climate. The temporal resolution and sensitivity of current techniques are not sufficient to measure the growth dynamics of single aerosol nanoparticles. Additionally, the specific time required for phase transition from solid to aqueous has not been measured. Here, we describe a label-free photonic microscope that uses the Bloch surface waves as the illumination source for imaging and sensing to provide real-time measurements of the hygroscopic growth dynamics of a single aerosol (diameter <100 nm) containing the main components of air pollution. This specific time can be measured for both pure and mixed aerosols, showing that organics will delay the phase transition. This photonic microscope can be extended to investigate physicochemical reactions of various aerosols, and then knowing this specific time will be favorable for understanding the reaction kinetics among single aerosols and the surrounding medium.

Bloch theorem dictated wave chaos in microcavity crystals.

Project description:Universality class of wave chaos emerges in many areas of science, such as molecular dynamics, optics, and network theory. In this work, we generalize the wave chaos theory to cavity lattice systems by discovering the intrinsic coupling of the crystal momentum to the internal cavity dynamics. The cavity-momentum locking substitutes the role of the deformed boundary shape in the ordinary single microcavity problem, providing a new platform for the in situ study of microcavity light dynamics. The transmutation of wave chaos in periodic lattices leads to a phase space reconfiguration that induces a dynamical localization transition. The degenerate scar-mode spinors hybridize and non-trivially localize around regular islands in phase space. In addition, we find that the momentum coupling becomes maximal at the Brillouin zone boundary, so the intercavity chaotic modes coupling and wave confinement are significantly altered. Our work pioneers the study of intertwining wave chaos in periodic systems and provide useful applications in light dynamics control.
