The geography of climate and the global patterns of species diversity.

ABSTRACT: Climate's effect on global biodiversity is typically viewed through the lens of temperature, humidity and resulting ecosystem productivity^1-6. However, it is not known whether biodiversity depends solely on these climate conditions, or whether the size and fragmentation of these climates are also crucial. Here we shift the common perspective in global biodiversity studies, transitioning from geographic space to a climate-defined multidimensional space. Our findings suggest that larger and more isolated climate conditions tend to harbour higher diversity and species turnover among terrestrial tetrapods, encompassing more than 30,000 species. By considering both the characteristics of climate itself and its geographic attributes, we can explain almost 90% of the variation in global species richness. Half of the explanatory power (45%) may be attributed either to climate itself or to the geography of climate, suggesting a nuanced interplay between them. Our work evolves the conventional idea that larger climate regions, such as the tropics, host more species primarily because of their size^7,8. Instead, we underscore the integral roles of both the geographic extent and degree of isolation of climates. This refined understanding presents a more intricate picture of biodiversity distribution, which can guide our approach to biodiversity conservation in an ever-changing world.

Project description:Global change influences species diversity patterns. Compared with seed plants, ferns are more sensitive to temperature and humidity changes and are an ideal group for studying species diversity patterns under future climate changes. Polypodiaceae, which has important ecological and application value, such as medicinal and ornamental value, is one of the most widely distributed fern families, with rich species diversity. Here, we explore the changes in the species diversity patterns of Polypodiaceae and their influencing factors. We collected more than 300,000 data points on the distribution of Polypodiaceae to map actual current species diversity patterns. We used Maxent to establish current and future potential species distribution models using 20 predictors and determined the current species diversity patterns using the actual current species diversity patterns and current potential species distribution model method. Multiple linear regression and random forest models were used to evaluate the effects of climate factors on the species diversity patterns of Polypodiaceae. We evaluated the effects of future climate changes on the species diversity of Polypodiaceae. The species diversity of Polypodiaceae increased gradually from higher to lower latitudes and the centers were concentrated in the low latitudes of tropical rainforests. There were four distribution centers across the world for Polypodiaceae: central America, central Africa, southern Asia, and northern Oceania. The species diversity of Polypodiaceae was greatly affected by precipitation factors rather than temperature factors. Under future climate change scenarios, species diversity is expected to shift and accumulate toward the equator in mid-to-low latitudes. Species diversity is projected to remain concentrated in low-latitude regions but will tend to aggregate towards higher altitude areas as global temperatures rise, with precipitation during the warmest season identified as the most influential factor.

Project description:AimGlobal-scale studies are required to identify broad-scale patterns in the distributions of species, to evaluate the processes that determine diversity and to determine how similar or different these patterns and processes are among different groups of freshwater species. Broad-scale patterns of spatial variation in species distribution are central to many fundamental questions in macroecology and conservation biology. We aimed to evaluate how congruent three commonly used metrics of diversity were among taxa for six groups of freshwater species.LocationGlobal.MethodsWe compiled geographical range data on 7083 freshwater species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fishes, crabs and crayfish to evaluate how species richness, richness of threatened species and endemism are distributed across freshwater ecosystems. We evaluated how congruent these measures of diversity were among taxa at a global level for a grid cell size of just under 1°.ResultsWe showed that although the risk of extinction faced by freshwater decapods is quite similar to that of freshwater vertebrates, there is a distinct lack of spatial congruence in geographical range between different taxonomic groups at this spatial scale, and a lack of congruence among three commonly used metrics of biodiversity. The risk of extinction for freshwater species was consistently higher than for their terrestrial counterparts.Main conclusionsWe demonstrate that broad-scale patterns of species richness, threatened-species richness and endemism lack congruence among the six freshwater taxonomic groups examined. Invertebrate species are seldom taken into account in conservation planning. Our study suggests that both the metric of biodiversity and the identity of the taxa on which conservation decisions are based require careful consideration. As geographical range information becomes available for further sets of species, further testing will be warranted into the extent to which geographical variation in the richness of these six freshwater groups reflects broader patterns of biodiversity in fresh water.
