An S-band multimode reflector antenna for a satellite constellation tracking system.

ABSTRACT: A multimode reflector antenna is a new concept proposed by our team in recent years, which does not correspond to the use of the traditional multimode feed but to innovation in the reflector design. This paper presents an S-band multimode reflector antenna based on multimode reflector theory. To achieve a flat-top beam shape, the main reflector of the antenna is divided into a middle region and an edge region. The height difference between them is approximately λ₀/4, and then, the reflected waves in different areas partially cancel out in the direction of maximum radiation. The voltage standing wave ratio of the antenna is less than 1.5 from 2.8 to 3.4 GHz (19.4%), and the gain is more than 29.2 dB in the same frequency band. At the same time, a good flat-top beam is achieved in the range of ± 2°. The antenna can be used for satellite constellation tracking and other systems that require high-gain flat-top beams.

A metasurface-based electronically steerable compact antenna system with reconfigurable artificial magnetic conductor reflector elements.

Project description:Beyond 5G networks would require newer technologies to deliver a smarter network. In accordance with these requirements, an electronically steerable compact antenna system capable of beam-switching in the azimuth plane is proposed. The design uses a monopole antenna as the main radiator surrounded by metasurface-based electronically reconfigurable reflector elements designed for the sub-6GHz range. The reflector elements use a reconfigurable capacitively loaded loop (CLL) which can be electronically activated to work as an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). The design offers a digitally controllable directional radiation pattern covering all 360° in the azimuth plane with a step-size of 30°, a directional gain of ≥4.98 dBi and a high front-to-back lobe ratio (FBR) of ≥14.9 dB. The compact and modular nature of the design combined with the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and 3D-printing makes the design low-cost and easier to integrate with various internet of thing (IoT) applications.

Reconfigurable Yagi-Uda antenna based on a silicon reflector with a solid-state plasma.

Project description:This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of a reconfigurable Yagi-Uda antenna based on a silicon reflector with a solid-state plasma. The silicon reflector, composed of serially connected p-i-n diodes, forms a highly dense solid-state plasma by injecting electrons and holes into the intrinsic region. When this plasma silicon reflector is turned on, the front-realized gain of the antenna increases by more than 2 dBi beyond 5.3 GHz. To achieve the large gain increment, the structure of the antenna is carefully designed with the aid of semiconductor device simulation and antenna simulation. By using an aluminum nitride (AlN) substrate with high thermal conductivity, self-heating effects from the high forward current in the p-i-n diode are efficiently suppressed. By comparing the antenna simulation data and the measurement data, we estimated the conductivity of the plasma silicon reflector in the on-state to be between 104 and 105 S/m. With these figures, silicon material with its technology is an attractive tunable material for a reconfigurable antenna, which has attracted substantial interest from many areas, such as internet of things (IoT) applications, wireless network security, cognitive radio, and mobile and satellite communications as well as from multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems.

Multiplexed Cassegrain Reflector Antenna for Simultaneous Generation of Three Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) Modes.

Project description:A multiplexed Cassegrain reflector antenna with a 2 × 2 open-ended rectangular waveguide (OERW) matrix feed and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode mux is proposed for the simultaneous generation of three OAM modes (l = 0, ±1). The OAM mode mux (OMM) was designed using sequential combinations of quadrature hybrids, crossovers, and phase shifters to multiplex and demultiplex three OAM modes at the same time. The 2 × 2 OERW matrix feed and the OMM were separately measured and their performances were verified according to proposed theories. A near-field antenna measurement for a multiplexed Cassegrain reflector antenna was conducted to obtain the far-field magnitude and phase patterns around polar elevation angle θ and azimuthal angle ϕ, thus confirming that our antenna can produce three OAM modes simultaneously. We also measured the communication link characteristics of two identical multiplexed antennas. The measurement results show that the channel isolation of three OAM modes is more than 12.7 [dB] and 17 [dB] for fixed and compensated receiver positions, respectively, indicating that the proposed antenna system can be used for independent communication links with the same frequency and polarisation.

Multimode optomechanical system in the quantum regime.

Project description:We realize a simple and robust optomechanical system with a multitude of long-lived (Q > 107) mechanical modes in a phononic-bandgap shielded membrane resonator. An optical mode of a compact Fabry-Perot resonator detects these modes' motion with a measurement rate (96 kHz) that exceeds the mechanical decoherence rates already at moderate cryogenic temperatures (10 K). Reaching this quantum regime entails, inter alia, quantum measurement backaction exceeding thermal forces and thus strong optomechanical quantum correlations. In particular, we observe ponderomotive squeezing of the output light mediated by a multitude of mechanical resonator modes, with quantum noise suppression up to -2.4 dB (-3.6 dB if corrected for detection losses) and bandwidths ≲90 kHz. The multimode nature of the membrane and Fabry-Perot resonators will allow multimode entanglement involving electromagnetic, mechanical, and spin degrees of freedom.

Absence of far-red emission band in aggregated core antenna complexes.

Project description:Reported herein is a Stark fluorescence spectroscopy study performed on photosystem II core antenna complexes CP43 and CP47 in their native and aggregated states. The systematic mathematical modeling of the Stark fluorescence spectra with the aid of conventional Liptay formalism revealed that induction of aggregation in both the core antenna complexes via detergent removal results in a single quenched species characterized by a remarkably broad and inhomogenously broadened emission lineshape peaking around 700 nm. The quenched species possesses a fairly large magnitude of charge-transfer character. From the analogy with the results from aggregated peripheral antenna complexes, the quenched species is thought to originate from the enhanced chlorophyll-chlorophyll interaction due to aggregation. However, in contrast, aggregation of both core antenna complexes did not produce a far-red emission band at ∼730 nm, which was identified in most of the aggregated peripheral antenna complexes. The 730-nm emission band of the aggregated peripheral antenna complexes was attributed to the enhanced chlorophyll-carotenoid (lutein1) interaction in the terminal emitter locus. Therefore, it is very likely that the no occurrence of the far-red band in the aggregated core antenna complexes is directly related to the absence of lutein1 in their structures. The absence of the far-red band also suggests the possibility that aggregation-induced conformational change of the core antenna complexes does not yield a chlorophyll-carotenoid interaction associated energy dissipation channel.

Ultra-High Efficiency and Broad Band Operation of Infrared Metasurface Anomalous Reflector based on Graphene Plasmonics.

Project description:Infrared metasurface anomalous reflector with ultra-high efficiency and broad band operation is designed via multi-sheet graphene layer with triangular holes. The anomalous reflection angle covers the range of 10° to 90° with the efficiency higher than 80%, over a broad spectral range from 7 μm-40 μm of infrared spectrum. It reaches above 92% at the center wavelength in the spectral response. By increasing the periodicity of phase gradient, we can expand this frequency band even further without losing efficiency. The compact design of metasurface affords the adjustability of the electrochemical potential level of graphene by means of gating. Additionally, the impact of the number of graphene sheets for the optimum efficiency of the proposed structure is investigated. By adding the secondary graphene metasurface with opposite direction of phase gradient, we demonstrated the tunability of the reflection angle from θr to -θr with bias voltage.

Person Tracking in Ultra-Wide Band Hybrid Localization System Using Reduced Number of Reference Nodes.

Project description:In this article a novel method of positional data integration in an indoor hybrid localization system combining inertial navigation with radio distance measurements is presented. A point of interest is the situation when the positional data and the radio distance measurements are obtained from less than thee reference nodes and it is impossible to unambiguously localize the moving person due to undetermined set of positional equations. The presented method allows to continuously provide localization service even in areas with disturbed propagation of the radio signals. Authors performed simulation and measurement studies of the proposed method to verify the precision of position estimation of a moving person in an indoor environment. It is worth noting that to determine the simulation parameters and realize the experimental studies the hybrid localization system demonstrator was developed, combining inertial navigation and radio distance measurements. In the proposed solution, results of distance measurements taken to less than three reference nodes are used to compensate the drift of the position estimated using the inertial sensor. In the obtained simulation and experimental results it was possible to reduce the localization error by nearly 50% regarding the case when only inertial navigation was used, additionally keeping the long term root mean square error at the level of ca. 0.50 m. That gives a degradation of localization precision below 0.1 m with respect to the fusion Kalman filtration when four reference nodes are present.

Satellite tracking resident songbirds in tropical forests

Project description:Advances in tracking technology have helped elucidate the movements of the planet’s largest and most mobile species, but these animals do not represent faunal diversity as a whole. Tracking a more diverse array of animal species will enable testing of broad ecological and evolutionary hypotheses and aid conservation efforts. Small and sedentary species of the tropics make up a huge part of earth’s animal diversity and are therefore key to this endeavor. Here, we investigated whether modern satellite tracking is a viable means for measuring the fine-scale movement patterns of such animals. We fitted five-gram solar-powered transmitters to resident songbirds in the rainforests of New Guinea, and analyzed transmission data collected over four years to evaluate movement detection and performance over time. Based upon the distribution of location fixes, and an observed home range shift by one individual, there is excellent potential to detect small movements of a few kilometers. The method also has clear limitations: total transmission periods were often short and punctuated by lapses; precision and accuracy of location fixes was limited and variable between study sites. However, impending reductions in transmitter size and price will alleviate many issues, further expanding options for tracking earth’s faunal diversity.
