New species and newly recorded species of Anisandrus Ferrari, 1867 ambrosia beetles from Thailand (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae, Xyleborini).

ABSTRACT: Five new species, Anisandrusmontanussp. nov., A.phithakpasp. nov., A.tanaosisp. nov., A.tritonsp. nov., and A.uniseriatussp. nov. are described from Thailand. Anisandruscarinensis (Eggers, 1923) is reported from Thailand for the first time and A.apicalis is removed from the Thai fauna. With the inclusion of the species described and recorded here, the diversity of Anisandrus is increased to 40 species, of which 11 occur in Thailand. A synoptic list and a key to the Anisandrus of Thailand are presented.

Project description:Ten species of ambrosia beetles of the tribe Xyleborini, Amasabeesoni (Eggers, 1930), Amasaopalescens (Schedl, 1937), Amasacylindrotomica (Schedl, 1939), Arixyleborushirsutulus Schedl, 1969, Beaveriumlatus (Eggers, 1923), Cnestusprotensus (Eggers, 1930), Coptodryasquadricostata (Schedl, 1942), Cryptoxyleborusconfusus Browne, 1950, Cryptoxyleboruspercuneolus (Schedl, 1951) and Cyclorhipidionvigilans (Schedl, 1939), are recorded here for the first time in Thailand. Diagnostic characters, illustrations, distribution and biological data are provided for each species. Xylosandrusramulorum (Schedl, 1957), stat. res. is removed from synonymy with Amasacylindrotomica and reinstated as a valid species.

Revision of the xyleborine ambrosia beetle genus Microperus Wood, 1980 (Curculionidae, Scolytinae, Xyleborini) of Thailand with four new species and four newly recorded species.

Project description:Microperus Wood, 1980 ambrosia beetles in Thailand are reviewed. Four species, M.bidentatus sp. nov., M.bucolicus sp. nov., M.globodeclivis sp. nov., and M.serratus sp. nov. are described. Four new combinations are given: Microperusarmaticeps (Schedl, 1942) comb. nov., Microperusexsculptus (Eggers, 1927) comb. nov., Microperuspedellus (Schedl, 1969) comb. nov., and Microperusspicatulus (Browne, 1986) comb. nov., stat. res., all from Xyleborus. Two new synonyms are proposed: Microperuscruralis (Schedl, 1975) (= Xyleborusmyllus Browne, 1986 syn. nov.), Microperusexsculptus (Eggers, 1927) (= Xyleborusdentipennis Browne, 1983 syn. nov.). Four species are reported from Thailand for the first time: Microperuschrysophylli (Eggers, 1930), Microperusexsculptus, Microperusnanus (Browne, 1949) and Microperusquercicola (Eggers, 1926). With the inclusion of the Microperus species described and recorded herein, the diversity of Microperus is increased to 35 species, of which 18 are recorded in Thailand. An updated key to the Microperus of the Indochinese Peninsula and China is provided. The taxonomy, diagnostic characters, and distribution of species are briefly discussed.

Effects of permethrin on ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in ornamental nurseries.

Project description:Exotic ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), such as Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford), and Xylosandrus compactus (Eichoff) are serious pests in southeastern ornamental nurseries. Preventative pyrethroid trunk sprays effectively reduce boring damage. However, it is unclear how pyrethroids such as permethrin prevent attack. Thus, the objective was to determine how permethrin-treated bolts interact with invading ambrosia beetles. In 2022, a study with 2 independent trials was conducted in a nursery on red maple (Acer rubrum L.), bolts during March and April, respectively. The treatments were (i) nonbaited, nontreated bolt, (ii) ethanol baited bolt, (iii) nonbaited bolt + glue [painted on bolt], (iv) ethanol baited bolt + glue, (v) ethanol baited bolt + glue + permethrin, (vi) ethanol baited bolt + glue + permethrin + verbenone, and (vii) ethanol baited bolt + glue + verbenone. Ambrosia beetles trapped on glue, beetles which fell into the pail with soap solution under the bolts, and entry holes on bolts were quantified. Permethrin prevented beetle attacks but did not reduce the number of ambrosia beetles landing on the treated bolts. Verbenone reduced ambrosia beetles from landing on the bolts but did not prevent boring into bolts. The numbers of ambrosia beetles in soapy water were not significantly different among treatments. Ambrosia beetles are landing on permethrin-treated bolts but not boring into the bolts, implying that fresh permethrin residues may not be necessary for ambrosia beetle management.

North American Xyleborini north of Mexico: a review and key to genera and species (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae).

Project description:Bark and ambrosia beetles (Scolytinae) are the most successful group of invasive wood borers worldwide, and the most invasive among them are species in the tribe Xyleborini. This haplodiploid, highly inbred, fungus-farming group is represented by 30 non-native species in North America, of which at least five are serious pests. The few identification resources for Xyleborini that exist are becoming outdated due to new species arrivals and nomenclatural changes. Here we present a new comprehensive key to Xyleborini currently known from the continental United States. Compared to the previous key, the following species have been added to the North American fauna: Ambrosiodmus minor (Stebbing), Ambrosiophilus nodulosus (Eggers), Anisandrus maiche Kurentsov, Coptoborus pseudotenuis (Schedl), Cyclorhipidion fukiense (Eggers), Dryocoetoides reticulatus Atkinson, Dryoxylon onoharaense (Murayama), Euwallacea interjectus (Blandford), Xyleborinus andrewesi (Blandford), Xyleborinus artestriatus (Eichhoff), Xyleborinus octiesdentatus (Murayama), Xyleborus bispinatus Eichhoff, Xyleborus seriatus Blandford, Xyleborus spinulosus Blandford, and Xylosandrus amputatus (Blandford).
