What dictates soft clay-like lithium superionic conductor formation from rigid salts mixture.

ABSTRACT: Soft clay-like Li-superionic conductors, integral to realizing all-solid-state batteries, have been recently synthesized by mixing rigid-salts. Here, through computational and experimental analysis, we clarify how a soft clay-like material can be created from a mixture of rigid-salts. Using molecular dynamics simulations with a deep learning-based interatomic potential energy model, we uncover the microscopic features responsible for soft clay-formation from ionic solid mixtures. We find that salt mixtures capable of forming molecular solid units on anion exchange, along with the slow kinetics of such reactions, are key to soft-clay formation. Molecular solid units serve as sites for shear transformation zones, and their inherent softness enables plasticity at low stress. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy confirms the formation of molecular solid units. A general strategy for creating soft clay-like materials from ionic solid mixtures is formulated.

Stacking Faults Assist Lithium-Ion Conduction in a Halide-Based Superionic Conductor.

Project description:In the pursuit of urgently needed, energy dense solid-state batteries for electric vehicle and portable electronics applications, halide solid electrolytes offer a promising path forward with exceptional compatibility against high-voltage oxide electrodes, tunable ionic conductivities, and facile processing. For this family of compounds, synthesis protocols strongly affect cation site disorder and modulate Li+ mobility. In this work, we reveal the presence of a high concentration of stacking faults in the superionic conductor Li3YCl6 and demonstrate a method of controlling its Li+ conductivity by tuning the defect concentration with synthesis and heat treatments at select temperatures. Leveraging complementary insights from variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, density functional theory, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we identify the nature of planar defects and the role of nonstoichiometry in lowering Li+ migration barriers and increasing Li site connectivity in mechanochemically synthesized Li3YCl6. We harness paramagnetic relaxation enhancement to enable 89Y solid-state NMR and directly contrast the Y cation site disorder resulting from different preparation methods, demonstrating a potent tool for other researchers studying Y-containing compositions. With heat treatments at temperatures as low as 333 K (60 °C), we decrease the concentration of planar defects, demonstrating a simple method for tuning the Li+ conductivity. Findings from this work are expected to be generalizable to other halide solid electrolyte candidates and provide an improved understanding of defect-enabled Li+ conduction in this class of Li-ion conductors.

A complex hydride lithium superionic conductor for high-energy-density all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Project description:All-solid-state batteries incorporating lithium metal anode have the potential to address the energy density issues of conventional lithium-ion batteries that use flammable organic liquid electrolytes and low-capacity carbonaceous anodes. However, they suffer from high lithium ion transfer resistance, mainly due to the instability of the solid electrolytes against lithium metal, limiting their use in practical cells. Here, we report a complex hydride lithium superionic conductor, 0.7Li(CB9H10)-0.3Li(CB11H12), with excellent stability against lithium metal and a high conductivity of 6.7 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C. This complex hydride exhibits stable lithium plating/stripping reaction with negligible interfacial resistance (<1 Ω cm2) at 0.2 mA cm-2, enabling all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries with high energy density (>2500 Wh kg-1) at a high current density of 5016 mA g-1. The present study opens up an unexplored research area in the field of solid electrolyte materials, contributing to the development of high-energy-density batteries.

Design and synthesis of the superionic conductor Na10SnP2S12.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as candidates for large-scale energy storage due to their low cost and the wide variety of cathode materials available. As battery size and adoption in critical applications increases, safety concerns are resurfacing due to the inherent flammability of organic electrolytes currently in use in both lithium and sodium battery chemistries. Development of solid-state batteries with ionic electrolytes eliminates this concern, while also allowing novel device architectures and potentially improving cycle life. Here we report the computation-assisted discovery and synthesis of a high-performance solid-state electrolyte material: Na10SnP2S12, with room temperature ionic conductivity of 0.4 mS cm(-1) rivalling the conductivity of the best sodium sulfide solid electrolytes to date. We also computationally investigate the variants of this compound where tin is substituted by germanium or silicon and find that the latter may achieve even higher conductivity.

A Na(+) Superionic Conductor for Room-Temperature Sodium Batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable lithium ion batteries have ruled the consumer electronics market for the past 20 years and have great significance in the growing number of electric vehicles and stationary energy storage applications. However, in addition to concerns about electrochemical performance, the limited availability of lithium is gradually becoming an important issue for further continued use and development of lithium ion batteries. Therefore, a significant shift in attention has been taking place towards new types of rechargeable batteries such as sodium-based systems that have low cost. Another important aspect of sodium battery is its potential compatibility with the all-solid-state design where solid electrolyte is used to replace liquid one, leading to simple battery design, long life span, and excellent safety. The key to the success of all-solid-state battery design is the challenge of finding solid electrolytes possessing acceptable high ionic conductivities at room temperature. Herein, we report a novel sodium superionic conductor with NASICON structure, Na3.1Zr1.95Mg0.05Si2PO12 that shows high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 3.5 × 10(-3) S cm(-1). We also report successful fabrication of a room-temperature solid-state Na-S cell using this conductor.

A Novel Time-Saving Synthesis Approach for Li-Argyrodite Superionic Conductor.

Project description:The wet-chemical synthetic approach for Li-argyrodite superionic conductors for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) is promising as it saves time, energy, and cost, while achieving scalable production. However, it faces certain commercialization issues such as byproduct generation, nucleophilic attack of the solvent, and long processing times. In this study, a facile and time-saving microwave-assisted wet synthesis (MW-process) approach is proposed for Li6 PS5 Cl (LPSC), which is completed in 3 h at the precursor-synthesis stage. The LPSC crystal obtained from the MW-process presents various advantages such as fast-PS4 3- generation, high solubility of LiCl, and low adverse effects from solvent molecules. These features help in achieving a high Li-ion conductivity (2.79 mS cm-1 ) and low electric conductivity (1.85×10-6 mS cm-1 ). Furthermore, the LPSC crystal is stable when reacting with Li metal (2000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 ) and exhibits superior cyclability with LiNi0.6 Co0.2 Mn0.2 (NCM622) (145.5 mA h g-1 at 0.5 C, 200 cycles with 0.12% of capacity loss per cycle). The proposed synthetic approach presents new insights into wet-chemical engineering for sulfide-based solid-electrolytes (SEs), which is crucial for developing ASSBs from a commercial-scale perspective.

Giant barocaloric effects over a wide temperature range in superionic conductor AgI.

Project description:Current interest in barocaloric effects has been stimulated by the discovery that these pressure-driven thermal changes can be giant near ferroic phase transitions in materials that display magnetic or electrical order. Here we demonstrate giant inverse barocaloric effects in the solid electrolyte AgI, near its superionic phase transition at ~420 K. Over a wide range of temperatures, hydrostatic pressure changes of 2.5 kbar yield large and reversible barocaloric effects, resulting in large values of refrigerant capacity. Moreover, the peak values of isothermal entropy change (60 J K-1 kg-1 or 0.34 J K-1 cm-3) and adiabatic temperature changes (18 K), which we identify for a starting temperature of 390 K, exceed all values previously recorded for barocaloric materials. Our work should therefore inspire the study of barocaloric effects in a wide range of solid electrolytes, as well as the parallel development of cooling devices.

In-situ electron microscopy mapping of an order-disorder transition in a superionic conductor.

Project description:Solid-solid phase transitions are processes ripe for the discovery of correlated atomic motion in crystals. Here, we monitor an order-disorder transition in real-time in nanoparticles of the super-ionic solid, Cu2-xSe. The use of in-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy allows the spatiotemporal evolution of the phase transition within a single nanoparticle to be monitored at the atomic level. The high spatial resolution reveals that cation disorder is nucleated at low co-ordination, high energy sites of the nanoparticle where cationic vacancy layers intersect with surface facets. Time-dependent evolution of the reciprocal lattice of individual nanoparticles shows that the initiation of cation disorder is accompanied by a ~3% compression of the anionic lattice, establishing a correlation between these two structural features of the lattice. The spatiotemporal insights gained here advance understanding of order-disorder transitions, ionic structure and transport, and the role of nanoparticle surfaces in phase transitions.

Printed sustainable elastomeric conductor for soft electronics.

Project description:The widespread adoption of renewable and sustainable elastomers in stretchable electronics has been impeded by challenges in their fabrication and lacklustre performance. Here, we realize a printed sustainable stretchable conductor with superior electrical performance by synthesizing sustainable and recyclable vegetable oil polyurethane (VegPU) elastomeric binder and developing a solution sintering method for their composites with Ag flakes. The binder impedes the propagation of cracks through its porous network, while the solution sintering reaction reduces the resistance increment upon stretching, resulting in high stretchability (350%), superior conductivity (12833 S cm-1), and low hysteresis (0.333) after 100% cyclic stretching. The sustainable conductor was used to print durable and stretchable impedance sensors for non-obstructive detection of fruit maturity in food sensing technology. The combination of sustainable materials and strategies for realizing high-performance stretchable conductors provides a roadmap for the development of sustainable stretchable electronics.

Room-temperature mechanocaloric effects in lithium-based superionic materials.

Project description:Mechanocaloric materials undergo sizable temperature changes during stress-induced phase transformations and hence are highly sought after for solid-state cooling applications. Most known mechanocaloric materials, however, operate at non-ambient temperatures and involve first-order structural transitions that pose practical cyclability issues. Here, we demonstrate large room-temperature mechanocaloric effects in the absence of any structural phase transformation in the fast-ion conductor Li3N (|?S| ~ 25?J K-1 kg-1 and |?T| ~ 5?K). Depending on whether the applied stress is hydrostatic or uniaxial the resulting caloric effect is either direct (?T?>?0) or inverse (?T?<?0). The dual caloric response of Li3N is due exclusively to stress-induced variations on its ionic conductivity, which entail large entropy and volume changes that are fully reversible. Our work should motivate the search of large and dual mechanocaloric effects in a wide variety of superionic materials already employed in electrochemical devices.

Revealing and reconstructing the 3D Li-ion transportation network for superionic poly(ethylene) oxide conductor.

Project description:Understanding the Li-ions conduction network and transport dynamics in polymer electrolyte is crucial for developing reliable all-solid-state batteries. In this work, advanced nano- X-ray computed tomography combined with Raman spectroscopy and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance are used to multi-scale qualitatively and quantitatively reveal ion conduction network of poly(ethylene) oxide (PEO)-based electrolyte (from atomic, nano to macroscopic level). With the clear mapping of the microstructural heterogeneities of the polymer segments, aluminium-oxo molecular clusters (AlOC) are used to reconstruct a high-efficient conducting network with high available Li-ions (76.7%) and continuous amorphous domains via the strong supramolecular interactions. Such superionic PEO conductor (PEO-LiTFSI-AlOC) exhibites a molten-like Li-ion conduction behaviour among the whole temperature range and delivers an ionic conductivity of 1.87 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 35 °Ϲ. This further endows Li electrochemical plating/stripping stability under 50 μA cm-2 and 50 μAh cm-2 over 2000 h. The as-built Li|PEO-LiTFSI-AlOC|LiFePO4 full batteries show a high rate performance and a capacity retention more than 90% over 200 cycling at 250 μA cm-2, even enabling a high-loading LiFePO4 cathode of 16.8 mg cm-2 with a specific capacity of 150 mAh g-1 at 50 °Ϲ.
