Expanding the social cure: a mixed-methods approach exploring the role of online group dance as support for young people (aged 16-24) living with anxiety.

ABSTRACT: There is an increased interest in whether online arts interventions support mental health and social connections. This study explored eight weeks of online group dance as support for young people (aged 16-24) living with anxiety. The applicability of the 'social cure' theoretical framework to the novel context of an online dance class was sought. The study utilised an embedded QUAL+quan design, incorporating participatory focus group discussions (n = 3 groups; n = 11 participants) and one-on-one interviews (n = 2 participants), creative reflections (n = 16 participants) and ethnographic fieldnotes, and a repeated measures design with surveys at three timepoints (week 1, n = 27; week 4, n = 18; week 8, n = 14). Thematic analysis identified two overarching themes demonstrating how the dance classes (i) provided the opportunity to co-construct a meaningful shared identity and (ii) supported holistic wellbeing. The quantitative findings supported this, suggesting lower anxiety, depression, and loneliness and higher wellbeing, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and group closeness. This study expands the social cure to its application to an online dance context for the first time.

Project description:BackgroundMany personality traits of adolescents are influenced by the personality traits and parenting styles of parents; Parents grow their children in different ways based on their cultural patterns and ideals; due to the importance of anxiety and depression in adolescents and considering the vital role of parents in growing children, the present study was designed and conducted to investigate the effect of parenting skills training on anxiety and depression in adolescent girls aged 12-16 years in Mahshahr city, Khuzestan province, Iran.Materials and methodsThis experimental study was performed on adolescent girls aged 12-16 years in Mahshahr city, Khuzestan province, Iran, in 2020. We chose both groups of our study using a multistage cluster sampling method. Mean anxiety and depression before, two, and six months after the intervention was measured by the test and control groups using parenting style, anxiety, and depression questionnaires. The educational intervention program for the training group was like a WhatsApp group, and sending messages were in the form of audio files, text messages, photos with captions, video messages, and PowerPoint presentations. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 24 and using independent t-test, paired t-test, repeated measures analysis of variance, and ANOVA.ResultsThe mean and standard deviation of the age were 14.03 ± 1.41 in the experimental group and 14.06 ± 1.38 in the control group. Before the educational intervention, the mean scores of anxiety and depression were not significantly different between the experimental and control groups. In contrast two months and six months after the educational intervention, there was a significant difference in the mean scores of anxiety and depression between the experimental and control groups (P < 0.05).ConclusionThe findings of the present study showed that an educational intervention on a group of mothers regarding their parenting styles has helped their adolescent daughters to handle their anxiety and depression and also led to a decrease in their anxiety and depression scores.

Project description:BackgroundThe reported prevalence rate of anxiety disorder in the paediatric population varies widely between different counties. Currently, there is no national epidemiological survey of childhood anxiety disorder in China. This study aims to investigate the national prevalence of anxiety disorder, the distribution profiles of different subtypes and its comorbidity rates among school students.MethodsA nationwide epidemiological survey of mental disorders in school students aged 6-16 years was conducted. Participants were randomly recruited from five provinces in China. The Child Behavior Checklist was used to screen students at high risk for mental disorders. The final diagnosis was made based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV. The point prevalence and comorbidity rate of anxiety disorder were calculated, and the difference between age, sex and socioeconomic status groups was also compared.ResultsGeneralised anxiety disorder (GAD) was the most common anxiety disorder in school-attending children and adolescents, with a prevalence rate of 1.3% (95% CI: 1.2 to 1.3). Separation anxiety and specific phobia were more common in children than in adolescents. Girls had a higher prevalence of panic disorder (0.3% vs 0.2%, χ2=14.6, p<0.001) and agoraphobia (0.9% vs 0.8%, χ2=4.3, p=0.03) than that of boys. We found no significant difference between developed and less developed areas. Girls were more likely to have panic disorder and GAD than boys, with ratios of 2.13:1 and 1.01:1, respectively. The co-occurrence of anxiety disorder and attention-deficit and disruptive behaviour disorder was very common, ranging from 40% to 85%.ConclusionsAnxiety disorder was prevalent among school students in China, and comorbidity with attention-deficit and disruptive disorder was very common. The data imply that screening for anxiety disorder is needed in school settings. Policies should be adapted to provide psychological services to children and adolescents. A comprehensive assessment is recommended in clinical practice.

Project description:BackgroundPrenatal depression and anxiety can significantly impact a child's neurodevelopment. However, the specific timing and patterns of these maternal psychological symptoms during pregnancy that influence the child's neurodevelopment remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms across pregnancy trimesters and their trajectories with neurodevelopmental outcomes in children aged 0 to 24 months.MethodsA total of 16,229 singletons born between January 2020 and December 2023 were included in this prospective study. Maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms in each trimester of pregnancy were assessed by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, respectively. The neurodevelopmental status of children aged 0-24 months was assessed by the Ages and Stages Questionnaire-Third Edition. Group-based trajectory model was employed to identify distinct trajectories of prenatal depressive and anxiety symptoms throughout pregnancy. Poisson regression was used to assess the associations of maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as their trajectories, with the child's neurodevelopment.ResultsA total of 1,791 (11.04%) children had neurodevelopmental delay in the communication domain, 1,127 (6.94%) in the gross motor domain, 1,750 (10.78%) in the fine motor domain, 1,137 (7.01%) in the problem-solving domain, and 1,724 (10.62%) in the personal-social domain. Maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimester, were associated with a higher risk of neurodevelopmental delay in all domains, with the most profound impact observed in the fine motor domain. Four trajectories were identified for prenatal depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Compared with children whose mothers had low level of depressive or anxiety symptoms throughout pregnancy, children whose mothers experienced consistently moderate or high level of these symptoms had a higher risk of neurodevelopmental delay, while children whose mothers experienced moderate level of depressive or anxiety symptoms that decreased to low levels after the first trimester did not show a different risk of neurodevelopmental delay.ConclusionMaternal depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy have an adverse impact on the neurodevelopment in offspring. This study highlights the importance of improving the mental health of pregnant women in order to support optimal neurodevelopment for their children.
