Project description:Production of highly conductive and mechanically robust ionogels is urgently needed for the development of diverse flexible electrical devices, but it remains challenging. Herein, we report a facile strategy to prepare high-performance ionogels (ionic conductivity of 1.9 S m-1, fracture strain of 170%) via electrostatic interaction between mechanically robust charged gel double networks and conductive ionic liquids. Ionogels based on charged polymer networks (with electrostatic interaction) exhibit obvious higher optical transmittance, ionic conductivity, and better mechanical properties compared with those based on neutral polymer networks (without electrostatic interaction). Ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of the ionogels can also be regulated by the double-network structure of the gels. We further develop an ionic skin sensor with the high-performance ionogels used as ionic conductors, which can exhibit excellent sensing performance even under harsh conditions. We envision that this new class of high-performance ionogels would be an attractive alternative to traditional hydrogels, and would extend the applications of ionic conductors to extreme environments.

Project description:Soybean meal (SM)-based adhesive exhibited a great potential to replace petroleum-derived ones to alleviate the energy crisis and eliminate carcinogenic formaldehyde. However, the bad water resistance (caused by low crosslinking density) and inherent brittleness of SM adhesive severely hindered its application. However, improving crosslinking density is generally accompanied by a toughness reduction of the adhesive. Herein, we developed a flexible long-chain starch with a hyper-branched structure (HD), and incorporated it with SM and a crosslinking agent to prepare a novel SM adhesive. Results showed that this adhesive exhibited both excellent water resistance and enhanced toughness. The wet bond strength of plywood fabricated using this adhesive was 354.5% higher than that of SM adhesive. These achievements are because introducing HD with hyper-branched groups enhanced crosslinking density, while HD's flexible long-chain structure improved toughness of the adhesive. This HD can promote the development of tough and hydrophobic bio-based composites.

Project description:Adhesive materials have recently drawn intensive attention due to their excellent sealing ability, thereby stimulating advances in materials science and industrial usage. However, reported adhesives usually exhibit weak adhesion strength, require high pressure for strong bonding, and display severe adhesion deterioration in various harsh environments. In this work, instead of water or organic solvents, a deep eutectic solution (DES) was used as the medium for photopolymerization of zwitterionic and polarized monomers, thus generating a novel ionogel with tunable mechanical properties. Multiple hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between DES and monomers facilitated ultrafast gelation and instant bonding without any external pressure, which was rarely reported previously. Furthermore, high adhesion in different harsh environments (e.g., water, acidic and basic buffers, and saline solutions) and onto hydrophilic (e.g., glass and tissues) and hydrophobic (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, and polypropylene) adherends was demonstrated. Also, high stretchability of the ionogel at extreme temperatures (-80 and 80 °C) indicated its widespread applications. Furthermore, the biocompatible ionogel showed high burst pressure onto stomach and intestine tissues to prevent liquid leakage, highlighting its potential as an adhesive patch. This ionogel provides unprecedented opportunities in the fields of packaging industry, marine engineering, medical adhesives, and electronic assembly.

Project description:As stretchable conductive materials, ionogels have gained increasing attention. However, it still remains crucial to integrate multiple functions including mechanically robust, room temperature self-healing capacity, facile processing, and recyclability into an ionogel-based device with high potential for applications such as soft robots, electronic skins, and wearable electronics. Herein, inspired by the structure of spider silk, a multilevel hydrogen bonding strategy to effectively produce multi-functional ionogels is proposed with a combination of the desirable properties. The ionogels are synthesized based on N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA), and ionic liquids (ILs) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMI][TFSI]). The synergistic hydrogen bonding interactions between PNIPAM chains, PDMA chains, and ILs endow the ionogels with improved mechanical strength along with fast self-healing ability at ambient conditions. Furthermore, the synthesized ionogels show great capability for the continuous fabrication of the ionogel-based fibers using the melt-spinning process. The ionogel fibers exhibit spider-silk-like features with hysteresis behavior, indicating their excellent energy dissipation performance. Moreover, an interwoven network of ionogel fibers with strain and thermal sensing performance can accurately sense the location of objects. In addition, the ionogels show great recyclability and processability into different shapes using 3D printing. This work provides a new strategy to design superior ionogels for diverse applications.

Project description:Structure design provides an effective solution to develop advanced soft materials with desirable mechanical properties. However, creating multiscale structures in ionogels to obtain strong mechanical properties is challenging. Here, an in situ integration strategy for producing a multiscale-structured ionogel (M-gel) via ionothermal-stimulated silk fiber splitting and moderate molecularization in the cellulose-ions matrix is reported. The produced M-gel shows a multiscale structural superiority comprised of microfibers, nanofibrils, and supramolecular networks. When this strategy is used to construct a hexactinellid inspired M-gel, the resultant biomimetic M-gel shows excellent mechanical properties including elastic modulus of 31.5 MPa, fracture strength of 6.52 MPa, toughness reaching 1540 kJ m-3 , and instantaneous impact resistance of 3.07 kJ m-1 , which are comparable to those of most previously reported polymeric gels and even hardwood. This strategy is generalizable to other biopolymers, offering a promising in situ design method for biological ionogels that can be expanded to more demanding load-bearing materials requiring greater impact resistance.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) show promise as boundary lubricants between sliding surfaces, taking advantage of their physical stability, chemical stability, and tunability. Here, we study friction forces across nanofilms of two archetypal DES mixtures: choline chloride + ethylene glycol and choline chloride + glycerol. Using a surface force balance, we control the film thickness (to subnanometer precision) and determine the friction force simultaneously. Measurements are made at different mole fractions of the choline chloride salt and the molecular solvent, allowing us to determine the role of each species in the observed behavior. We find that the nature of the molecular solvent is dominant in determining the lubrication behavior, while the fraction of ChCl is relatively less important. By analyzing the steps in friction and the gradient of friction with load as the layers squeeze away from between the surfaces, we learn various mechanistic aspects of lubrication across the DES nanofilms of relevance to design and optimization of these promising fluids.

Project description:Timely and stable sealing of uncontrolled high-pressure hemorrhage in emergency situations outside surgical units remains a major clinical challenge, contributing to the high mortality rate associated with trauma. The currently widely used hemostatic bioadhesives are ineffective for hemorrhage from major arteries and the heart due to the absence of biologically compatible flexible structures capable of simultaneously ensuring conformal tough adhesion and biomechanical support. Here, inspired by the principle of chromatin assembly, we present a tissue-conformable tough matrix for robust sealing of severe bleeding. This hierarchical matrix is fabricated through a phase separation process, which involves the in-situ formation of nanoporous aggregates within a microporous double-network (DN) matrix. The dispersed aggregates disrupt the rigid physical crosslinking of the original DN matrix and function as a dissipative component, enabling the aggregate-based DN (aggDN) matrix to efficiently dissipate energy during stress and achieve improved conformal attachment to soft tissues. Subsequently, pre-activated bridging polymers facilitate rapid interfacial bonding between the matrix and tissue surfaces. They synergistically withstand considerable hydraulic pressure of approximately 700 mmHg and demonstrate exceptional tissue adhesion and sealing in rat cardiac and canine aortic hemorrhages, outperforming the commercially available bioadhesives. Our findings present a promising biomimetic strategy for engineering biomechanically compatible and tough adhesive hydrogels, facilitating prompt and effective treatment of hemorrhagic wounds.

Project description:The development of tough adhesive hydrogels has enabled unprecedented adhesion to wet and moving tissue surfaces throughout the body, but they are typically composed of nondegradable components. Here, a family of degradable tough adhesive hydrogels containing ≈90% water by incorporating covalently networked degradable crosslinkers and hydrolyzable ionically crosslinked main-chain polymers is developed. Mechanical toughness, adhesion, and degradation of these new formulations are tested in both accelerated in vitro conditions and up to 16 weeks in vivo. These degradable tough adhesives are engineered with equivalent mechanical and adhesive properties to nondegradable tough adhesives, capable of achieving stretches >20 times their initial length, fracture energies >6 kJ m-2 , and adhesion energies >1000 J m-2 . All degradable systems show complete degradation within 2 weeks under accelerated aging conditions in vitro and weeks to months in vivo depending on the degradable crosslinker selected. Excellent biocompatibility is observed for all groups after 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks of implantation, with minimal fibrous encapsulation and no signs of organ toxicity. On-demand removal of the adhesive is achieved with treatment of chemical agents which do not cause damage to underlying skin tissue in mice. The broad versatility of this family of adhesives provides the foundation for numerous in vivo indications.

Project description:Non-ionic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are non-ionic designer solvents with various applications in catalysis, extraction, carbon capture, and pharmaceuticals. However, discovering new DES candidates is challenging due to a lack of efficient tools that accurately predict DES formation. The search for DES relies heavily on intuition or trial-and-error processes, leading to low success rates or missed opportunities. Recognizing that hydrogen bonds (HBs) play a central role in DES formation, we aim to identify HB features that distinguish DES from non-DES systems and use them to develop machine learning (ML) models to discover new DES systems. We first analyze the HB properties of 38 known DES and 111 known non-DES systems using their molecular dynamics (MD) simulation trajectories. The analysis reveals that DES systems have two unique features compared to non-DES systems: The DESs have ① more imbalance between the numbers of the two intra-component HBs and ② more and stronger inter-component HBs. Based on these results, we develop 30 ML models using ten algorithms and three types of HB-based descriptors. The model performance is first benchmarked using the average and minimal receiver operating characteristic (ROC)-area under the curve (AUC) values. We also analyze the importance of individual features in the models, and the results are consistent with the simulation-based statistical analysis. Finally, we validate the models using the experimental data of 34 systems. The extra trees forest model outperforms the other models in the validation, with an ROC-AUC of 0.88. Our work illustrates the importance of HBs in DES formation and shows the potential of ML in discovering new DESs.

Project description:Wearable thermocells offer a sustainable energy solution for wearable electronics but are hindered by poor fatigue resistance, low fracture energy, and thermal inefficiencies. In this study, we present a high-strength, fatigue-resistant thermocell with enhanced thermoelectric performance through solvent exchange-assisted annealing and chaotropic effect-enhanced thermoelectric properties. The mechanical strength and toughness are improved by forming macromolecular crystal domains and entangling polymer chains. Guanidine ions, with strong chaotropic properties, optimize the solvation layer of redox ion couple, boosting thermoelectric efficiency. Compared to existing anti-fatigue thermocells, the current design exhibits a 20-fold increase in mechanical toughness (368 kJ m-2) and a 3-fold increase in Seebeck coefficient (5.4 mV K-1). With an ultimate tensile strength of 12 MPa, a fatigue threshold of 4.1 kJ m-2, and a specific output power density of 714 μW m-2 K-2, this thermocell outperforms existing designs, enabling more reliable and efficient wearable electronics and stretchable devices.
