Project description:A novel approach is developed for desulphurization of fuels or organics without use of catalyst. In this process, organic and aqueous phases are mixed in a predefined manner under ambient conditions and passed through a cavitating device. Vapor cavities formed in the cavitating device are then collapsed which generate (in-situ) oxidizing species which react with the sulphur moiety resulting in the removal of sulphur from the organic phase. In this work, vortex diode was used as a cavitating device. Three organic solvents (n-octane, toluene and n-octanol) containing known amount of a model sulphur compound (thiophene) up to initial concentrations of 500 ppm were used to verify the proposed method. A very high removal of sulphur content to the extent of 100% was demonstrated. The nature of organic phase and the ratio of aqueous to organic phase were found to be the most important process parameters. The results were also verified and substantiated using commercial diesel as a solvent. The developed process has great potential for deep of various organics, in general, and for transportation fuels, in particular.

Project description:BackgroundRenewable liquid biofuel production will reduce crude oil import of India. To displace the huge quantity of fossil fuels used for energy production, this research was focused on utilization of unexploited low-cost agricultural residues for biofuel production. Corncobs are a byproduct of corn processing industry, and till now it is not utilized for biofuel production, eventhough it has high lignocellulosic concent. In this study, combined hydrodynamic cavitation and enzymatic (HCE) method was evaluated as a pretreatment method of corncob for biofuel production. The most significant process parameters namely (i) enzyme loading (3-10 U g-1), (ii) biomass loading (2.5-5.0%), and (iii) duration (5-60 min) were optimized and their effects on combined HCE pretreatment of corncob was studied through response surface methodology for lignin reduction, hemicellulose reduction and cellulose increase.ResultsThe highest lignin reduction (47.4%) was obtained in orifice plate 1 (OP1) under the optimized conditions namely biomass loading at 5%, enzyme loading at 6.5 U g-1 of biomass, and reaction duration of 60 min. The above tested independent variables had a significant effect on lignin reduction. The cavitational yield and energy consumption under the above-mentioned optimized conditions for OP1 was 3.56 × 10-5 g J-1 and 1.35 MJ kg-1, respectively.ConclusionsIt is evident from the study that HCE is an effective technology and requires less energy (1.35 MJ kg-1) than other biomass pretreatment methods.

Project description:Landfill leachate (LLCH) disposal poses challenges due to high pollutant concentrations. This study investigates the use of biochar (BC) derived from wheat straw for nitrogen content reduction. Laboratory experiments evaluated BC's adsorption capacity (qm) for nitrogen removal from ammonium chloride solution (NH4Cl) and LLCH, along with testing isotherm models. The results demonstrated that BC was more efficient (95.08%) than commercial activated carbon AC (93.11%), the blank, in adsorbing nitrogen from NH4Cl. This superior performance of BC may be attributed to its higher carbon content (57.74%) observed through elemental analysis. Lower results for BC/LLCH may be due to LLCH's complex chemical matrix. The Langmuir isotherm model best described BC/NH4Cl adsorption (qm = 0.5738 mg/g). The AC/NH4Cl data also fitted into the Langmuir (R2 ˃ 0.9) with a qm of 0.9469 mg/g, and 26.667 mg/g (R2 ˂ 0.9) was obtained for BC/LLCH; the BC/LLCH also gave higher qm (R2 ˃ 0.9) using the Jovanovich model (which also follows Langmuir's assumptions). The mean energy of the adsorption values estimated for the AC/NH4Cl, BC/NH4Cl, and BC/LLCH processes were 353.55, 353.55, and 223.61 kJ/mol, respectively, suggesting that they are all chemisorption processes and ion exchange influenced their adsorption processes. The Freundlich constant (1/n) value suggests average adsorption for BC/LLCH. The BC/LLCH data followed the Harkins-Jura model (R2: 0.9992), suggesting multilayered adsorption (or mesopore filling). In conclusion, biochar derived from wheat straw shows promising potential for landfill leachate remediation, offering efficient nitrogen removal capabilities and demonstrating compatibility with various adsorption models. This research also lays the groundwork for further exploration of other biochar-based materials in addressing environmental challenges associated with landfill leachate contamination.

Project description:In this paper, a statistically-based experimental design with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to examine the effects of functional conditions on the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of landfill leachate using a Cu/N co-doped TiO2 (Ti) electrode. The experimental design method was applied to response surface modeling and the optimization of the operational parameters of the photoelectro-catalytic degradation of landfill leachate using TiO2 as a photo-anode. The variables considered were the initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, pH and the potential bias. Two dependent parameters were either directly measured or calculated as responses: chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and total organic carbon (TOC) removal. The results of this investigation reveal that the optimum conditions are an initial pH of 10.0, 4377.98mgL-1 initial COD concentration and 25.0 V of potential bias. The model predictions and the test data were in satisfactory agreement. COD and TOC removals of 67% and 82.5%, respectively, were demonstrated. Under the optimal conditions, GC/MS showed 73 organic micro-pollutants in the raw landfill leachate which included hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds and esters. After the landfill leachate treatment processes, 38 organic micro-pollutants disappeared completely in the photoelectrocatalytic process.

Project description:Landfill leachate water is often treated in a biological processing step. In most cases a stable operation of the industrial scale plants is controlled by sum parameters such as process relevant ion concentrations, dry matter concentration and dissolved oxygen concentration. A deeper understanding of the current status of the individual cell or the biocoenosis would help to understand malfunctions or the reason for inefficient plant performance. In a simple batch experimental setup, samples of two different conditions have been generated to unravel bacterial proteome changes in response to medium term lack of oxygen supply and landfill leachate addition. The first condition was an activated sludge sample condition from an industrial scale landfill leachate treatment plant with the process stages of nitrification and denitrification. After 45 days without aeration and with addition of leachate and carbon sources as fed batch, the second sample (condition 2) was taken. A comprehensive LC-MS/MS based protemic screen was performed aiming for the identification and quantification of waste water specific bacteria proteomes. To this end, a novel combination of two protein extraction methods has been established meeting the requirements for LC-MS/MS anaylsis. Around 600 proteins were identified of which 90 % were quantified in at least 3 replicates. Numerous essential proteins to maintain the cell redox homeostasis are overexpressed in the condition 1 which was aerated with oxygen and stressed by the ultrafiltration compared to condition 2, which was not aerated in a lab experiment. In addition, heat and cold shock proteins and two proteins related to the apoptosis of organisms (spermidine/putrescine transport system and apoptosis-inducing factor) were identified.

Project description:Landfill leachate membrane concentrate (LLMC) is a type of non-biodegradable wastewater intercepted by the membrane filtration of the landfill leachate membrane bioreactor (MBR) effluent. The concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) in the LLMC collected from a landfill in Beijing were determined to be 4700 mg/L and 487 mg/L, 2-5 times higher than those in the MBR effluent. The photoelectro oxidation (PEO) followed with the NaClO enhanced Fe2+ coagulation were more effective for the removal of COD than the Fenton oxidation followed with the enhanced coagulation. The final removal efficiencies of COD, UV254, NH4+-N and color degree were 86%, 95%, 93% and 95% with Fe2+ (90 mmol/L) and NaClO (60 mmol/L, Fe2+:NaClO = 1.5:1), and PEO for 3 hours with a current density of 400 A/m2. Due to the existence of Cl-, the chlorinated intermediates, which would be more toxic, were detected in the PEO treatment. However, the intermediates could be eliminated finally. As a result, the NaClO enhanced Fe2+ coagulation treatment combined with PEO treatment was efficient for the treatment of LLMC.

Project description:Phosphorus is an essential constituent of all living organisms but it is non-renewable and its natural reserves are fast depleting. Phosphorus discharged in wastewater could be sustainably reused by microalgae. Knowledge about cellular phosphorus dynamics in microalgae has been rapidly advancing and luxury phosphorus (poly-P) uptake phenomenon by microalgae is becoming the focus point for many research studies. Ultra-membrane treated landfill leachate was used as a nutrient medium for the growth of indigenous microalgal species with simultaneous removal of phosphorus (P-PO4 -3) and nitrogen (N-NH4 + and N-NO3). Different concentrations of phosphorus (15-100 mg. L-1 P-PO4 -3) was added to leachate. Highest nitrogen removal (69.03% N-NH4 +) was observed for 100 mg. L-1 P-PO4 -3 supplemented medium. P removal efficiency was 100% for all the tested P-PO4 -3 concentrations. Intracellular poly-P was detected by florescence microscopy. Microalgae can be grown and utilized for the sustainable recovery of P and N from landfill leachate.

Project description:A new process consisting of a landfill bioreactor, partial-nitritation (PN) and the anammox process has been developed for landfill leachate treatment. In this study, the landfill bioreactor exhibited excellent performance in methane-rich biogas recovery, with a specific biogas yield of 0.47 L gas g(-1) COD and methane percentages of 53-76%. PN was achieved in the aerobic reactor by high free ammonia (101 ± 83 mg NH3 L(-1)) inhibition for nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, and the desired PN effluent composition (effluent nitrite: ammonium ratio of 1.1 ± 0.3) was controlled by adjusting the alkalinity concentration per unit of ammonium oxidized to approximately 14.3 mg CaCO3 mg(-1) N in the influent. The startup of anammox process was successfully achieved with a membrane bioreactor in 160 d, and a maximum nitrogen removal rate of 216 mg N L(-1) d(-1) was attained for real landfill leachate treatment. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction results confirmed that the cell-specific anammox activity was approximately 68-95 fmol N cell(-1) d(-1), which finally led to the stable operation of the system.

Project description:Electrochemical oxidation of landfill leachate after biological treatment by a novel electrochemical system, which was constructed by introducing a corroding electrode of iron (Fec) between a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and carbon felt (CF) cathode (named as BDD-Fec-CF), was investigated in the present study. Response surface methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken (BBD) statistical experiment design was applied to optimize the experimental conditions. Effects of variables including current density, electrolytic time and pH on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) removal efficiency were analyzed. Results showed that electrolytic time was more important than current density and pH for both COD and NH3-N degradation. Based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) under the optimum conditions (current density of 25 mA·cm-2, electrolytic time of 9 h and pH of 11), the removal efficiencies for COD and NH3-N were 81.3% and 99.8%, respectively. In the BDD-Fec-CF system, organic pollutants were oxidized by electrochemical and Fenton oxidation under acidic conditions. Under alkaline conditions, coagulation by Fe(OH)3 and oxidation by Fe(VI) have great contribution on organic compounds degradation. What is more, species of organic compounds before and after electrochemical treatment were analyzed by GC-MS, with 56 kinds components detected before treatment and only 16 kinds left after treatment. These results demonstrated that electrochemical oxidation by the BDD-Fec-CF system has great potential for the advanced treatment of landfill leachate.
