Charge stripes in the graphene-based materials.

ABSTRACT: We present an analytical model of the charge density wave instability in graphene sheets within the intercalated graphite CaC₆ compound. The instability yields the experimentally observed uniaxial charge stripes of periodically modulated electron density, coupled to the softest phonon mode of the superlattice consisting of the Ca atoms intercalated between graphene planes. The Fermi surface of the chemically doped graphene undergoes the novel type of instability driven by the mechanism that gains the condensation energy of the stripe state by the topological reconstruction of the Fermi surface. This mechanism appears to be entirely different from the one based on the Fermi surface nesting, which has been considered a paradigm in the present literature concerning the onset of charge density waves.

Project description:In this work, we performed an in vitro investigation of GRM interactions with the BBB. To this aim,we employed GRMs with different surface chemistry and stability, both murine and human models of increasing complexity, and a portfolio of complementary label-free analytical techniques. The use of label-free strategies allows to avoid the problem of fluorescent tag interference and leaching, which makes the results on the bionano-interactions difficult to interpret.42-43 The workflow developed in this paper is widely applicable to study the translocation of different micro- and nano-materials and represents a valuable method to reduce the more expensive and ethically concerning in vivo biodistribution studies.

New fluorene-based bipolar charge transporting materials.

Project description:Air-stable and solution-processable fluorene-based bipolar charge transporting materials (CTMs) were designed, synthesized, and analyzed. These CTMs feature anthraquinone, 9-fluorenone, and 9-dicyanofluorenylidine groups and exhibit good film formation properties for solvent processing. Quantum chemistry simulations and optical absorption measurements proved that several stable conformers and charge transfer complexes form inside the molecules. Hole mobilities in CTMs were around 10-4 to 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1, while electron mobility in compounds with anthraquinone and 9-dicyanofluorenylidine groups was approximately one order of magnitude lower.

Safety Assessment of Graphene-Based Materials.

Project description:Graphene is the first 2D atomic crystal, and its isolation heralded a new era in materials science with the emergence of several other atomically thin materials displaying multifunctional properties. The safety assessment of new materials is often something of an afterthought, but in the case of graphene, the initial isolation and characterization of the material was soon followed by the assessment of its potential impact on living systems. The Graphene Flagship project addressed the health and environmental aspects of graphene and other 2D materials, providing an instructive lesson in interdisciplinarity - from materials science to biology. Here, the outcomes of the toxicological and ecotoxicological studies performed on graphene and its derivatives, and the key lessons learned from this decade-long journey, are highlighted.

Direct evidence for charge stripes in a layered cobalt oxide.

Project description:Recent experiments indicate that static stripe-like charge order is generic to the hole-doped copper oxide superconductors and competes with superconductivity. Here we show that a similar type of charge order is present in La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, an insulating analogue of the copper oxide superconductors containing cobalt in place of copper. The stripe phase we have detected is accompanied by short-range, quasi-one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic order, and provides a natural explanation for the distinctive hourglass shape of the magnetic spectrum previously observed in neutron-scattering measurements of La2-xSrxCoO4 and many hole-doped copper oxide superconductors. The results establish a solid empirical basis for theories of the hourglass spectrum built on short-range, quasi-static, stripe correlations.

Bending and breaking of stripes in a charge ordered manganite.

Project description:In charge-ordered phases, broken translational symmetry emerges from couplings between charge, spin, lattice, or orbital degrees of freedom, giving rise to remarkable phenomena such as colossal magnetoresistance and metal-insulator transitions. The role of the lattice in charge-ordered states remains particularly enigmatic, soliciting characterization of the microscopic lattice behavior. Here we directly map picometer scale periodic lattice displacements at individual atomic columns in the room temperature charge-ordered manganite Bi0.35Sr0.18Ca0.47MnO3 using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. We measure transverse, displacive lattice modulations of the cations, distinct from existing manganite charge-order models. We reveal locally unidirectional striped domains as small as ~5 nm, despite apparent bidirectionality over larger length scales. Further, we observe a direct link between disorder in one lattice modulation, in the form of dislocations and shear deformations, and nascent order in the perpendicular modulation. By examining the defects and symmetries of periodic lattice displacements near the charge ordering phase transition, we directly visualize the local competition underpinning spatial heterogeneity in a complex oxide.

Functionalized graphene-based materials for cementitious applications.

Project description:Graphene-based materials (GBM) are promising cementitious composite additives that can significantly improve the mechanical characteristics and durability of concrete due to their unique properties, such as high surface area and aspect ratio and excellent tensile strength, to name a few. To display their full potential, GBM have to be homogeneously dispersed into the aqueous environment of cement-based matrices. The present study addresses the issue of limited dispersibility in the aqueous media of GBM through the chemical functionalization of mono- and few-layer graphene structures with hydrophilic aryl sulfonate groups and shows that a series of mortar samples containing modified GBM exhibit increased flexural and compressive strength by up to 17% and 30%, respectively, compared to mortar references without additives.

Graphene-Based Materials for Stem Cell Applications.

Project description:Although graphene and its derivatives have been proven to be suitable for several biomedical applications such as for cancer therapy and biosensing, the use of graphene for stem cell research is a relatively new area that has only recently started to be investigated. For stem cell applications, graphene has been utilized by itself or in combination with other types of materials such as nanoparticles, nanofibers, and polymer scaffolds to take advantage of the several unique properties of graphene, such as the flexibility in size, shape, hydrophilicity, as well as its excellent biocompatibility. In this review, we will highlight a number of previous studies that have investigated the potential of graphene or its derivatives for stem cell applications, with a particular focus on guiding stem cell differentiation into specific lineages (e.g., osteogenesis, neurogenesis, and oligodendrogenesis), promoting stem cell growth, stem cell delivery/transplantation, and effective monitoring of their differentiation. We hope that this review promotes and accelerates the use of graphene-based materials for regenerative therapies, especially for stem cell-based approaches to cure various incurable diseases/disorders such as neurological diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease), stroke, spinal cord injuries, bone/cartilage defects, and cardiovascular diseases.

Unexpectedly efficient ion desorption of graphene-based materials.

Project description:Ion desorption is extremely challenging for adsorbents with superior performance, and widely used conventional desorption methods involve high acid or base concentrations and large consumption of reagents. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the rapid and efficient desorption of ions on magnetite-graphene oxide (M-GO) by adding low amounts of Al3+. The corresponding concentration of Al3+ used is reduced by at least a factor 250 compared to conventional desorption method. The desorption rate reaches ~97.0% for the typical radioactive and bivalent ions Co2+, Mn2+, and Sr2+ within ~1 min. We achieve effective enrichment of radioactive 60Co and reduce the volume of concentrated 60Co solution by approximately 10 times compared to the initial solution. The M-GO can be recycled and reused easily without compromising its adsorption efficiency and magnetic performance, based on the unique hydration anionic species of Al3+ under alkaline conditions. Density functional theory calculations show that the interaction of graphene with Al3+ is stronger than with divalent ions, and that the adsorption probability of Al3+ is superior than that of Co2+, Mn2+, and Sr2+ ions. This suggests that the proposed method could be used to enrich a wider range of ions in the fields of energy, biology, environmental technology, and materials science.

Development of Graphene-Based Materials in Bone Tissue Engineaering.

Project description:Bone regeneration-related graphene-based materials (bGBMs) are increasingly attracting attention in tissue engineering due to their special physical and chemical properties. The purpose of this review is to quantitatively analyze mass academic literature in the field of bGBMs through scientometrics software CiteSpace, to demonstrate the rules and trends of bGBMs, thus to analyze and summarize the mechanisms behind the rules, and to provide clues for future research. First, the research status, hotspots, and frontiers of bGBMs are analyzed in an intuitively and vividly visualized way. Next, the extracted important subjects such as fabrication techniques, cytotoxicity, biodegradability, and osteoinductivity of bGBMs are presented, and the different mechanisms, in turn, are also discussed. Finally, photothermal therapy, which is considered an emerging area of application of bGBMs, is also presented. Based on this approach, this work finds that different studies report differing opinions on the biological properties of bGBMS due to the lack of consistency of GBMs preparation. Therefore, it is necessary to establish more standards in fabrication, characterization, and testing for bGBMs to further promote scientific progress and clinical translation.

Review of Polarization Optical Devices Based on Graphene Materials.

Project description:Graphene has received extensive scholarly attention for its extraordinary optical, electrical, and physicochemical properties, as well as its compatibility with silicon-based semiconductor processes. As a unique two-dimensional atomic crystal material, graphene has excellent mechanical properties, ultra-high carrier mobility, ultra-wide optical response spectrum, and strong polarization dependence effect, which make it have great potential in new optical and polarization devices. A series of new optical devices that are based on graphene have been developed, showing excellent performance and broad application prospects. In this paper, the recent research progress of polarizers, sensors, modulators, and detectors that are based on the polarization characteristics of graphene is reviewed. In particular, the polarization dependence effect and broadband absorption enhancement of graphene under total reflection structure are emphasized, which enhance the interaction between graphene and light and then provide a new direction for research of graphene polarization devices.
