Determination of loyalty among high school students to retain in the same university for higher education: An integration of Self-Determination Theory and Extended Theory of Planned Behavior.

ABSTRACT: Student loyalty generally refers to the formed bond between the student and a university. This relationship between a university and its students proves essential in a university's success in the competitive field of higher education institutions. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting students' loyalty among high school students to pursue their college or higher education in their current universities by utilizing Self-Determination Theory and Extended Theory of Planned Behavior. A total of 1224 high school students voluntarily participated and answered an online questionnaire that consist of 80 questions. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that competency had the highest direct significant effect on perceived behavioral control which subsequently led to student satisfaction, followed by relatedness and empathy. In addition, student satisfaction had the highest direct effect significant effect on student loyalty, followed by university image and effectiveness. Interestingly, university ranking, programs offered, and kinship patronage also had significant indirect effects on student loyalty. This new framework may be a theoretical foundation for universities to enhance student loyalty and student recruitment. Considering students as customers, the satisfaction of students would result in an increase in the application which would present an increase in population, sales, marketability, and profitability of the university.

Project description:BackgroundDue to the absence of a vaccine of SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, the most effective way to reduce transmission of the virus is by applying social distancing practices. Exploring factors that determine whether people adopt social distancing measures is, therefore, critical to reducing the spread of the virus. This study aimed to investigate people's intentions to socially distance based on the extended Theory of Planned Behavior.MethodsA questionnaire was distributed to the sample population and collected through social media online and WhatsApp groups from March 26, 2020 to March 29, 2020. There were 823 analyzed out of 1870 responses. The extended TPB variables and risk perception were measured using a 7-point scale (scored from 1 to 7). Data were analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modeling method.ResultsStudy found that the factors influencing the intention to perform social distancing were subjective norms and perceived behavior control. Risk perception affected attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Media exposure was found to determine attitudes, subjective norms, and risk perceptions. The relationship between attitudes and intentions, and media use and perceived behavior control were not significant. The better and effective risk communication that can change the level of risk perception, raise family and religious leader as well as increase to control behavior are the keys to people's perform social distancing. Results from a multigroup analysis revealed that younger individuals showed a stronger relationship between the influence of risk perception and PBC and media use on risk perception. The predictive strength of subjective norms from risk perception and risk perception from media use was more strongly associated with rural populations.ConclusionsThe results of study provide an initial understanding of the level of the public's risk perception to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Findings also revealed the role of media use in determining risk perception, attitudes and subjective norms and, in turn, change people's intention to socially distance. This study may add to the literature of behavioral changes in pandemic and provide a framework for both policymakers and practitioners to formulate effective interventions in the future.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aims to utilize the extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model to examine the intentions of clinical interns in China towards Human papillomaviruses (HPV) vaccination. It also fills a significant gap in the literature concerning vaccine acceptance in this specific population.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was carried out with clinical interns in Shandong Province, China, with a total of 1,619 participants. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires, including demographic characteristics, TPB variables, and HPV-related health knowledge. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to identify key factors influencing vaccination intentions, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the interrelationships between these factors.ResultsThis study initially identified key predictors affecting clinical interns' intentions to receive the HPV vaccine through hierarchical regression analysis. The preliminary model, which accounted for demographic factors, revealed foundational impacts of household income and HPV-related clinical experience on intentions. After integrating TPB variables-attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and HPV-related health knowledge-the model's explanatory power was enhanced to 37.30%. SEM analysis focused on the interplay among TPB constructs and extended variables, confirming their significance in forming vaccination intentions, with subjective norm having the most substantial impact (β = 0.375, p < 0.001). The extended TPB model explained over half of the variance in vaccination intentions, substantiating the hypotheses and revealing the psychological determinants behind clinical interns' decision-making for HPV vaccination.ConclusionThe extended TPB model from this study effectively explains the vaccination intentions among clinical interns for HPV, offering theoretical support for public health strategies and educational interventions targeting this group. These findings are of significant importance for public health practice and future health promotion strategies.

Project description:ObjectivesTo investigate pharmacy students' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, intentions and their behaviour towards patient safety using a theory of planned behaviour framework.DesignMixed-methods research.SettingPrivate university in Malaysia.ParticipantsPharmacy undergraduate students participated in the study. There were 18 students participated in the qualitative study and 272 students responded to the survey questionnaire.MethodsA convergent parallel-mixed method design, involving a quantitative survey and qualitative focus group discussions was used among pharmacy students in a private university in Malaysia. Qualitative data of transcribed verbatim texts were then subjected to a thematic content analysis framework. Multiple correlations were undertaken using the quantitative data to examine how the dependent variable (self-reported knowledge) related to the independent variables (attitudes, behavioural intentions, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control.Primary outcomePharmacy students' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, behavioural intentions constructs led to their behaviour towards patient safety.Secondary outcomeThe quantitative study revealed that there was a moderate positive correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and attitudes (r=0.48, p=0.03).ResultsPharmacy students' attitudes and perceived behavioural control constructs had positive correlations with pharmacy students' self-reported knowledge on patient safety. There was no correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and subjective norms (r=0.27, p=0.23). There was a weak positive correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and perceived behavioural control (r=0.39, p=0.04). There was no correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and behavioural intention (r=0.20, p=0.56).ConclusionsTheory of planned behaviour constructs such as attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and behavioural intentions of pharmacy students, defined their behaviour towards patient safety. Pharmacy students' attitudes and perceived behavioural control constructs were correlated with their self-reported knowledge on patient safety.
