Association between age people started working and missing teeth in an elderly population in Ecuador: Evidence from a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT: Child labor has significant physical, psychological, and social consequences, which can persist into adulthood. This study investigates the association between the age at which an individual begins working and tooth loss in older adults in Ecuador. We analyzed data from the SABE 2009 survey (Survey of Health, Well-being, and Aging), using binary logistic regression to examine potential relationships. Our analytical sample comprised of 3,899 older adults from mainland Ecuador, with 42.50% having started working between the ages of 5 and 12. Unadjusted logistic regression results indicated that older adults who began working at ages 5-12 had a 42% higher risk of missing more than 4 teeth compared to those who started working at ages 18-25. After adjusting for potential confounders, the resulting risk was 28% higher than for the reference group [OR 1.28 95% CI 1.25-1.30]. Our findings demonstrate that early engagement in labor is a risk factor for tooth loss among older adults, displaying the long-term impacts of child labor on oral health. Health education and benefits should be provided to this vulnerable population for tooth loss prevention.

Project description:IntroductionLinguistic disorders are one of the common problems in Alzheimer's disease, which in recent years has been considered as one of the key parameters in the diagnosis of Alzheimer (AD). Given that changes in sentence processing and working memory and the relationship between these two activities may be a diagnostic parameter in the early and preclinical stages of AD, the present study examines the comprehension and production of sentences and working memory in AD patients and healthy aged people.MethodsTwenty-five people with mild Alzheimer's and 25 healthy elderly people participated in the study. In this study, we used the digit span to evaluate working memory. Syntactic priming and sentence completion tasks in canonical and non-canonical conditions were used for evaluating sentence production. We administered sentence picture matching and cross-modal naming tasks to assess sentence comprehension.ResultsThe results of the present study revealed that healthy elderly people and patients with mild Alzheimer's disease have a significant difference in comprehension of relative clause sentences (P <0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in comprehension of simple active, simple active with noun phrase and passive sentences (P> 0.05). They had a significant difference in auditory and visual reaction time (P <0.05). Also there was a significant difference between the two groups in syntactic priming and sentence completion tasks. However, in non-canonical condition of sentence completion, the difference between the two groups was not significant (P> 0.05).ConclusionThe results of the present study showed that the mean scores related to comprehension, production and working memory in people with mild Alzheimer's were lower than healthy aged people, which indicate sentence processing problems at this level of the disease. People with Alzheimer have difficulty comprehending and producing complex syntactic structures and have poorer performance in tasks that required more memory demands. It seems that the processing problems of these people are due to both working memory and language problems, which are not separate from each other and both are involved in.

Project description:Missing teeth have been linked to incident cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality. Our previous study revealed that signs of oral infections and inflammatory conditions (i.e., periodontal disease and dental caries) are associated with disadvantageous features of circulating metabolites. This study investigates whether missing teeth and tooth loss, the end points of these diseases, are associated with similar metabolic features. The 2 Finnish population-based studies Health-2000 (n = 6,197) and FINRISK-97 (n = 6,050) were included, as was Parogene (n = 465), a cohort of patients with an indication for coronary angiography. The number of teeth was recorded in clinical examinations. Serum concentrations of 157 metabolites were determined by a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy-based method. Health-2000 participants (n = 3,371) provided follow-up serum samples, and 1,186 of them participated in a repeated oral examination 11 y after the baseline. Linear regression models adjusted for age, sex, smoking, body mass index, and diabetes were fitted to the number of teeth and metabolite measures. The results from the separate cohorts were combined in a fixed-effects meta-analysis. We also analyzed whether the number of teeth at baseline and tooth loss during follow-up were associated with changes in metabolite concentrations. Missing teeth were associated with increased very-low-density lipoprotein-related measures and triglyceride concentrations, as well as with decreased high-density lipoprotein parameters and small particle size. Missing teeth also had an association with low levels of unsaturated fatty acids (FAs), including omega-3 and omega-6 FAs, and elevated proportions of monounsaturated and saturated FAs. The number of teeth at baseline predicted changes in several concentrations, such as measures related to intermediate-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and FAs, but no associations with tooth loss during the 11-y follow-up were observed. To conclude, missing teeth are associated with adverse metabolic features characterized by systemic inflammation and several risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the most common pathologies in the general population. However, research into the prevalence of upper arm MSDs is hampered by a lack of uniformity in case definition, and by the absence of a gold standard for measurement. Furthermore, some sectors of the population have benefited from extensive research whilst others have largely been ignored. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVES: to investigate the prevalence of shoulder MSDs in a working age female population not exposed to specific occupational risk factors such as heavy and/or repetitive work, assessing the differences in prevalence recorded by using three different standard measurement tools. METHODS: 302 working aged women were enrolled in this study (age 20-55 years). Each subject underwent three different assessments: standardized questionnaires for symptoms and disability and the SF36 health survey, a clinical assessment performed by a blinded orthopaedic specialist, and an imaging assessment by means of ultrasound (US) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) if indicated. RESULTS: According to the questionnaire 77 subjects (25.5%) complained of shoulder pain whilst 225 (74.5%) were asymptomatic. According to the clinical examination, 31 subjects (10.3%) resulted positive, whereas 271 subjects (89.7%) had normal shoulders. According to the imaging findings, 26 subjects (8.6%) had alterations to the anatomical structures of the shoulder, whilst 276 subjects (91.4%) had no detectable abnormalities in either shoulder. In all assessments, the prevalence increased with age (p?=?0.001). CONCLUSION: Depending on the outcome measure used, the prevalence of reported MSDs of the shoulder varies considerably. There is a striking difference between the prevalence of subjective reported symptoms and the standardized clinical/imaging examinations. However, the results of all the assessments did concur in one aspect; there was a significant trend of increased prevalence of shoulder MSDs with age. When looking at reported prevalence, this study shows the importance of noting the measurement method used before making comparisons, as it can vary considerably. The epidemic of shoulder pain reported is not indicative of an epidemic of shoulder pathology.
