The release of inorganic phosphate (P<sub>i</sub>) from actin filaments constitutes a key step in their regulated turnover, which is fundamental to many cellular functions. The mechanisms underlying P<sub>i</sub> release from the core and barbed end of actin filaments remain unclear.
