Project description:The theoretical calculations, namely multipole-derived charge analysis, quantum theory of atom in molecules, and non-bonding interaction (NCI), were performed for [2.2]paracyclophanes, [2.2]paracyclophane-7,9-dienes, and [3.3]paracyclophanes optimized at B3LYP/6-311++G** level, including dispersion correction. The substituent effect of the electron donor N(Me)2 and electron acceptor NO2 group and the influence of the length of bridges joining the aromatic ring on aromatic ring interaction energy (AIE) and strain energy were discussed. The local and electrostatic character of the substituent effect in paracyclophanes was shown. The presence of the weak orbital through-space C···C interaction between the [3.3]paracyclophane ring and weak CH···O hydrogen bonds between the substituents in the different rings was shown.

Project description:The 5'-alkynylation of uridine-derived aldehydes is described. The addition of alkynyl Grignard reagents on the carbonyl group is significantly influenced by the 2',3'-di-O-protecting groups (R1): O-alkyl groups led to modest diastereoselectivities (65:35) in favor of the 5'R-isomer, whereas O-silyl groups promoted higher diastereoselectivities (up to 99:1) in favor of the 5'S-isomer. A study related to this protecting group effect on the diastereoselectivity is reported.

Project description:In this study, we newly designed and developed a synthesis route based on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the derivatives of 4'-(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine with various (hetero)aryl substituents, differing in electronic character, on a triazol ring. The obtained compounds were comprehensively characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemical and thermal studies. Moreover, preliminary biological tests were conducted. The investigation allowed the selection of materials with the most promising properties with particular emphasis on the nature of the substituents. In addition, theoretical studies (DFT and TD-DFT) were performed to verify the comprehensive understanding of experimental results.

Project description:In the title compound, C(13)H(15)N(3)O(5), the O and N atoms of the nitro-methyl group and the methyl C atom of the ethyl group are disordered over two sets of sites with refined occupancies of 0.629 (7):0.371 (7) and 0.533 (8):0.467 (8), respectively. The dihydro-pyran ring has an extremely flattened conformation. An intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. In the crystal, pairs of N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link mol-ecules, forming inversion dimers. In addition, weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds are also present.

Project description:In the title compound, C(11)H(9)Cl(2)N(3)O(5), the dihydro-pyran ring adopts a near-half-chair conformation. The benzene ring makes a torsion angle of 5.02 (5)° with the dihydro-pyran ring. Adjacent mol-ecules are inter-linked through inter-molecular C-H⋯O, N-H⋯O and C-Cl⋯π [3.4743 (9) Å] inter-actions. The inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond generates an R(2) (2)(12) motif, which is observed to contribute to the crystal packing stability. Moreover, the mol-ecular structure displays an S(6) motif formed by intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding.

Project description:Sirohaem is a new type of haem that has been detected as a prosthetic group of several bacterial and plant enzymes that catalyse the six-electron reductions of sulphite to sulphide or of nitrite to NH(3). When a methionine-requiring mutant of Escherichia coli K12 was grown on a minimal medium supplemented with d-glucose and l-[Me-(3)H]methionine, 2.4 methyl groups per spectrophotometrically detectable haem group were incorporated into the sirohaem prosthetic group of the NADPH-sulphite reductase isolated from the organism. When the same strain of cells was grown on minimal medium supplemented with d-[U-(14)C]glucose and l-[Me-(3)H]methionine, the sirohaem isolated was found to contain a ratio of glucose-derived carbon/methionine-derived methyl of 19.8. This ratio is in excellent agreement with the value of 20 predicted by the iron-dimethyl-urotetrahydroporphyrin structure for sirohaem proposed by Murphy, Siegel, Kamin & Rosenthal [(1973) J. Biol. Chem.248, 2801-2814]. It can be concluded that sirohaem is indeed methylated, with the methyl groups derived from methionine (rather than by modification of existing side chains, as in protohaem). The structure proposed by Murphy et al. (1973) is therefore probably correct in its essential features. A possible relationship between the pathway for biosynthesis of sirohaem and that for synthesis of vitamin B(12) is discussed.

Project description:Styryl quinolines are biologically active compounds with properties largely depending on the substituents on the styryl and quinoline rings. The supramolecular aspects of this class of compounds are rarely explored. In this study, two new series of styryl quinoline derivatives, bearing -OH and -NO2 groups at the eighthposition of the quinoline ring and -SCH3, -OCH3, and -Br groups on the styryl ring, have been developed, and their structural, supramolecular, and cytotoxic properties have been analyzed. Crystallographic analyses revealed the exciting substituent-dependent structural and supramolecular features of these compounds. In general, the 8 -OH substituted derivatives (SA series) exhibited a non-planar molecular geometry having larger dihedral angles (5.75-59.3°) between the planes of the aromatic rings. At the same time, the 8 -NO2 substituted derivatives (SB series) exhibited a more or less planar molecular geometry, as revealed by the smaller dihedral angles (1.32-3.45°) between the aromatic rings. Multiple O-H···O, C-H···O, O-H···N, and π-π stacking interactions among the molecules lead to fascinating supramolecular architectures such as hydrogen-bonded triple helices, zig-zag 1D chains, π-π stacked infinite chains, and so forth in their crystal lattice. Hirshfeld surface analyses confirmed the existence of strong π-π stacking and other weak bonding interactions in these compounds. The preliminary cytotoxic properties of SA and SB series compounds were evaluated against the human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa cells), which further highlighted the roles of functional substituents on the aromatic rings. The SA series compounds with the -OH substituent on the quinoline ring exhibited better cytotoxicity than the SB series compounds with a -NO2 substituent. Similarly, the electron-withdrawing group -Br on the styryl ring enhanced the cytotoxicity in both series. The IC50 values were 2.52-4.69 and 2.897-10.37 μM, respectively, for the SA and SB series compounds. Compound S3A having -OH and -Br groups on the quinoline and styryl ring, respectively, exhibited the best IC50 value of 2.52 μM among all the compounds tested. These findings confirm the relevance of the hydroxyl group in the eighth position of quinoline. In short, the present study attempts to provide a systematic analysis of the effects of aromatic ring substituents on the structural, supramolecular, and cytotoxic properties of styryl quinolines for the first time.

The dihedral angle between the nitro group and benzene ring is 21.33 (19)° and that between the carboxyl-ate group and the benzene ring is 72.09 (17)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak inter-molecular bifurcated C-H⋯O inter-actions occurring in the (100) plane.

Project description:Water-soluble 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives have been frequently utilized as catholytes for aqueous redox flow batteries to achieve cost-effective renewable energy storage. However, fundamental knowledge of TEMPO derivatives is still largely underdeveloped. Herein, a comprehensive study on the properties of TEMPO derivatives has been conducted in aqueous electrolytes. The results confirm that the redox potential, diffusion coefficient, electron transfer rate constant and solubility are clearly influenced by functional groups of TEMPO derivatives and supporting electrolytes. The charge-discharge cycling performance is evaluated using a symmetric redox flow battery configuration. The capacity decay for TEMPO-based catholytes is mainly derived from the crossover of the oxidized state. The presented study not only advances an in-depth understanding of TEMPO-based RFB applications, but also highlights the challenge of crossover of redox-active TEMPO derivative molecules applied in aqueous RFBs.
