Project description:Safranine O is widely used in the bioenergetics community as an indicator dye to determine membrane potentials and as an electron transfer mediator in potentiometric titrations. Here we show that two different commercial preparations of Safranine O contain less than sixty percent by weight of the title compound, with the rest primarily consisting of two closely related safranine isomers. All three major isomer components were isolated using reverse phase HPLC and their structures determined using mass spectrometry and two-dimensional NMR. These Safranines have two-electron midpoint potentials ranging from -272 to -315 mV vs. SHE. We have also investigated the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the compounds and found that they display distinct spectral and photophysical properties. While this mixture may aid in Safranine O's utility as a mediator compound, membrane potential measurements must take this range of dye potentials into account.

Project description:Here we explored a novel ZnO nanorod array template-assisted electrodeposition route to synthesize large-scale single-walled polypyrrole (PPy) nanotube arrays (NTAs) and multi-walled MnO(2)/PPy/MnO(2) NTAs. The structures of nanotubes, such as external and inner diameters, wall thicknesses, and lengths, can be well controlled by adjusting the diameters and lengths of ZnO nanorods and deposition time. The synthesized hybrid MnO(2)/PPy/MnO(2) triple-walled nanotube arrays (TNTAs) as electrodes showed high supercapacitive perporties, excellent long-term cycling stability, and high energy and power densities. The PPy layers in MnO(2)/PPy/MnO(2) TNTAs provide reliable electrical connections to MnO(2) shells and uniquely serve as highly conductive cores to support the redox reactions in the active two-double MnO(2) shells with highly electrolytic accessible surface area. The fabricated multi-walled NTAs allow high efficient utilization of electrode materials with facilitated transports of ions and electrons. The outstanding performance makes MnO(2)/PPy/MnO(2) TNTAs promising candidates for supercapacitor electrodes.

Project description:A series of seven homoleptic CuI complexes based on hetero-bidentate P^N ligands was synthesized and comprehensively characterized. In order to study structure-property relationships, the type, size, number and configuration of substituents at the phosphinooxazoline (phox) ligands were systematically varied. To this end, a combination of X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy, time-resolved emission spectroscopy, quenching experiments and cyclic voltammetry was used to assess the photophysical and electrochemical properties. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory calculations were applied to also analyze the excited state structures and characteristics. Surprisingly, a strong dependency on the chirality of the respective P^N ligand was found, whereas the specific kind and size of the different substituents has only a minor impact on the properties in solution. Most importantly, all complexes except C3 are photostable in solution and show fully reversible redox processes. Sacrificial reductants were applied to demonstrate a successful electron transfer upon light irradiation. These properties render this class of photosensitizers as potential candidates for solar energy conversion issues.

Project description:Three asymmetric amino-substituted perylene bisimide dyes with different n-alkyl chain lengths (n = 6, 12, or 18), 1-(N,N-dialkylamino)perylene bisimides (1a-1c), were synthesized under mild condition in high yields and were characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectrometer), UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra, as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV). These molecules show intense green color in both solution and solid state and are highly soluble in dichloromethane and even in nonpolar solvents, such as hexane. The shapes of the absorption spectra of 1a-1c in solid state and in solution were found to be virtually the same, indicating that the long alkyl chains could efficiently prevent aggregation. They exhibit a unique charge transfer emission in the near-infrared region, of which the peak wavelengths show strong solvatochromism. The dipole moments of the compounds have been estimated using the Lippert-Mataga equation, and upon excitation, they show larger dipole moment changes than that of 1-aminoperylene bisimide (2). Furthermore, all of the compounds exhibit two quasi-reversible one-electron oxidations and two quasi-reversible one-electron reductions in dichloromethane at modest potentials. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on these dyes are reported in order to rationalize their molecular structures and electronic properties.

Project description:Organic ligand-protected metal nanoclusters have attracted extensively attention owing to their atomically precise composition, determined atom-packing structure and the fascinating properties and promising applications. To date, most research has been focused on thiol-stabilized gold and silver nanoclusters and their single crystal structures. Here the single crystal copper nanocluster species (Cu6(SC7H4NO)6) determined by X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry is presented. The hexanuclear copper core is a distorted octahedron surrounded by six mercaptobenzoxazole ligands as protecting units through a simple bridging bonding motif. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insight into the electronic structure and show the cluster can be viewed as an open-shell nanocluster. The UV-vis spectra are analyzed using time-dependent DFT and illustrates high-intensity transitions involving primarily ligand states. Furthermore, the as-synthesized copper clusters can serve as promising nonenzymatic sensing materials for high sensitive and selective detection of H2O2.

Project description:A series of bis-(4'-pyridylethynyl)arenes (arene=benzene, tetrafluorobenzene, and anthracene) were synthesized and their bis-N-methylpyridinium compounds were investigated as a class of π-extended methyl viologens. Their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties (cyclic voltammetry), as well as their interactions with DNA/RNA were investigated. The dications showed bathochromic shifts in emission compared to the neutral compounds. The neutral compounds showed very small Stokes shifts, which are a little larger for the dications. All of the compounds showed very short fluorescence lifetimes (<4 ns). The neutral compound with an anthracene core has a quantum yield of almost unity. With stronger acceptors, the analogous bis-N-methylpyridinium compound showed a larger two-photon absorption cross-section than its neutral precursor. All of the dicationic compounds interact with DNA/RNA; while the compounds with benzene and tetrafluorobenzene cores bind in the grooves, the one with an anthracene core intercalates as a consequence of its large, condensed aromatic linker moiety, and it aggregates within the polynucleotide when in excess over DNA/RNA. Moreover, all cationic compounds showed highly specific CD spectra upon binding to ds-DNA/RNA, attributed to the rare case of forcing the planar, achiral molecule into a chiral rotamer, and negligible toxicity toward human cell lines at ≤10 μM concentrations. The anthracene-analogue exhibited intracellular accumulation within lysosomes, preventing its interaction with cellular DNA/RNA. However, cytotoxicity was evident at 1 μM concentration upon exposure to light, due to singlet oxygen generation within cells. These multi-faceted features, in combination with its two-photon absorption properties, suggest it to be a promising lead compound for development of novel light-activated theranostic agents.

Project description:Selenium, depending on its crystal structure, can exhibit various properties and, as a result, be used in a wide range of applications. However, its exploitation has been limited due to the lack of understanding of its complex growth mechanism. In this work, template-free electrodeposition has been utilized for the first time to synthesize hexagonal-selenium (t-Se) microstructures of various morphologies at 80°C. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) revealed 5 reduction peaks, which were correlated with possible electrochemical or chemical reaction related to the formation of selenium. Potentiostatic electrodeposition using 100 mM SeO2 showed selenium nanorods formed at-0.389 V then increased in diameter up to -0.490 V, while more negative potentials (-0.594 V) induced formation of sub-micron wires with average diameter of 708 ± 116 nm. Submicron tubes of average diameter 744 ± 130 nm were deposited at -0.696 V. Finally, a mixture of tubes, wires, and particles was observed at more cathodic potential due to a combination of nucleation, growth, dissolution of structures as well as formation of amorphous selenium via comproportionation reaction. Texture coefficient as a function of applied potential described the preferred orientation of the sub-microstructures changed from (100) direction to more randomly oriented as more cathodic potentials were applied. Lower selenium precursor concentration lead to formation of nanowires only with smaller average diameters (124 ± 42 nm using 1 mM, 153 ± 46 nm using 10 mM SeO2 at -0.389 V). Time-dependent electrodeposition using 100 mM selenium precursor at -0.696 V explained selenium was formed first as amorphous, on top of which nucleation continued to form rods and wires, followed by preferential dissolution of the wire core to form tubes.

Project description:Nonenzymatic electrochemical detection of glucose is popular because of its low price, simple operation, high sensitivity, and good reproducibility. Co-Cu MOFs precursors were synthesized via the solvothermal way at first, and a series of porous spindle-like Cu-Co sulfide microparticles were obtained by secondary solvothermal sulfurization, which maintained the morphology of the MOFs precursors. Electrochemical studies exhibit that the as-synthesized Cu-Co sulfides own excellent nonenzymatic glucose detection performances. Compared with CuS, Co (II) ion-doped CuS can improve the conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of the materials. At a potential of 0.55 V, the as-prepared Co-CuS-2 modified electrode exhibits distinguished performance for glucose detection with wide linear ranges of 0.001-3.66 mM and high sensitivity of 1475.97 µA·mM-1·cm-2, which was much higher than that of CuS- and Co-CuS-1-modified electrodes. The constructed sulfide sensors derived from MOF precursors exhibit a low detection limit and excellent anti-interference ability for glucose detection.

Project description:Porous ion-exchange resins with features of high selectivity, high capacity, fast adsorption kinetics and chemical stability over a wide pH range are attractive for extracting precious metals like copper and upcycling waste. In this study, porous glutaraldehyde-polyethyleneimine (GA-PEI) particulate resin was synthesised using diatomaceous earth (DE) particles as a bio-template. The crosslinking of PEI by GA was successfully conducted on the surface of DE. Removal of the template DE, merely by chemical etching with potassium hydroxide, resulted in the porous GA-PEI particulate resin. The resin showed excellent selectivity for copper ions in binding and recovery from solutions as complex as real legacy acid mine drainage liquid. The copper ion uptake capacity of the GA-PEI resin was determined to be >8 times greater than non-etched GA-PEI-DE particles. Under the investigated conditions, the GA-PEI resin showed higher selectivity to copper ions from real legacy acid mine drainage liquid compared to the commercial resins Purolite S930 Plus and Lewatit TP 220. Importantly, the absorbed copper ions could be released by simply adjusting pH of the solution to 1. For uptake from acid mine drainage liquid at pH 4 and elution at pH 1, purer copper solutions were achieved with GA-PEI compared to Purolite S930 Plus or Lewatit TP 220 following two cycles of iteration. The results indicate the great potential for using the porous GA-PEI resin in copper extraction under real-world conditions.

Project description:Triarylboranes containing linear or angular benzodithiophene moieties and bearing one or two dimesitylboron units were synthesized. The electrochemical and optical features of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy while DFT calculations were run to analyze the energetic landscape of these systems. For both linear and angular benzodithiophenes, symmetrical disubstitution leads to the highest photoluminescence yields. The linear benzodithiophene disubstituted with two dimesitylboron units proved to be the most interesting and promising molecule as an electron-transport material for organic electronics owing to its LUMO energy level of -2.84 eV which is close to those of commonly used electron transport materials like bathocuproine or bathophenantroline.
